I really hope this doesn’t sound weird but every time you post a video it reminds me how similar we are! I have been climbing for years. Love snow and ice settings, love books, am mostly plant based, love asmr etc etc.
it is just nice to see someone who is like me. I often feel so alone where I currently live. All my friends are in different states.
Just thank you for being you.

I too struggle with acne, but I’ve made my peace with it because it’s so hard to control. But you still look vibrant and beautiful as ever, ik you might not be looking for validation but it’s a nice reminder to know that our beauty still shines through even with some red circles on our faces 🤍

Grendel purring is the best. You know how there are music boxes - you open them and they play a tune. Well wouldn't it be cool if there were musical bookmarks, but when you open your book, the bookmark plays Grendel purring.

I live in the town that Small Things Like These is set in, so naturally I avoided reading it for ages. But Emma, Claire Keegan’s work is so STUNNING in the sparseness of her use of language. I hope you love her work. As an added bonus, they’ve made a film of the book starring Cillian Murphy which should be released later this year 💛

I'm on my second reading of Middlemarch, and my biggest advice would be to really focus in on Eliot's observational powers. Neither time round have I really felt any need to be 'invested' in any of the characters, because the thing that keeps me going is just how much Eliot saw in humans. I'm not sure there's another novelist or novel which has captured how people think and behave, and why, with such acuity. I see myself in every single character (yes, even Casaubon!). The novel is far more about how humans act, and how all our lives are shaped by the lives of those around us than it is about any of the individual characters' arcs. There are so many lines in Middlemarch that take my breath away with just how *true* they are. I really don't think there are many other artists of any kind who have done that on the level that Eliot does in Middlemarch. That said, good luck with all the eary 19th century politics, you're going to know more about the 1832 reform act than you could ever possibly have wanted to know by the time you're done 😂
p.s. Just a word of advice about stuff like facials - generally they'll get a commission for everything they sell, so it's always worth going and doing your own research on products before spending money (although you should wear sunscreen daily, regardless of the weather!) I have so much sympathy about the acne though, I have the exact same issue and it sucks 😭

      @mimowinxy Місяць тому +5

Your advice on middlemarch was put beautifully! I'm of the loving it camp lol. I think mainly because I loove psychology so the focus being on the characters and how well Eliot has written them is so beautiful to me. Books are centered around looking at human nature are my favorite. I love that you said you can see yourself in everyone, I feel the same way! It takes some serious talent to be able to do that with so many characters. I'm in the last 200 pages and am anxious to see how things wrap up for everyone. I think it'll be hard putting it down once I've finished.

As a person who went through acne issues in my younger days (like a million years ago), I can imagine how tough it is for you. Probably you already talked about this at the spa or with some specialists, but I always recommend those who suffer from acne to deal with it from inside your body. Acne is more like inner body issues, and there's only so much you can do on the superficial level. It's always better to consult with your gynecologist if your hormonal balance is ok and go see your dermatologist. Seeing a nutritionist is also a good option, because you may have some sensitivity or intolerance with some type of food, which can cause chronic inflammation or harm the gut health. Sleeping well is also important as eating well, because it affects your hormonal function. Exercising, specially strength training, is so beneficial to your body and mind, so you're on the right track. Take good care of yourself, dear.

One time I got a facial and the lady also told me my skin was oily but dehydrated haha. I realized it was because I was stripping away my skin's moisture barrier by using cleansers that were too harsh and not moisturizing enough. My acne did become much more manageable when I started working on that. But I wanted to tell you the EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 is my ride-or-die sunscreen! Lightly moisturizing, nice texture, and doesn't smell bad! Anyways you look lovely with or without acne!

omg! you're reading beauty is a wound. i only read half of it in 2021 cos i sunddenly got dengue fever and when i was heal i was in a mood for something else. glad that there's a new motivation for me to read it. though i'm obviously gonna read it in bahasa indonesia.
also about acne, i had acne problems too during my teenage years and what help me resolve it was finding out what my skin needed. like the reason i had acnes were cos my skin lacks hydration and i also never exfoliate back then. so i use products that focus on hydration (products from korea/japan are good recommendations). and also exfoliate like once per week. thankfully it did well for me. and i hope you will find what suits your skin soon too!❤

24:53 highly recommend finding some book ends and it’s okay to have them two rows deep for a bit. Books like to be vertical, it’s better for their spines than horizontal stackage. Bookends will also help you kind of lock them together so it’ll be harder for furry friends to knock them off.

I'm sure you've already considered it plenty, but accutane is the only thing I would consider as a cure to acne. You can have the perfect diet, the perfect lifestyle, the perfect skincare and still break out like crazy due to genetics. When I was younger I had acne probably 5x worse (no exaggeration). Accutane for a few months straight up cured it, and 10 years since when I still don't get acne. People get hung up on side-effects, but the vast majority of people will experience dry skin while on the treatment and that's about it.

hi Emma, just wanted to let you know that i also started having cystic acne when i started living in Paris and it was awful - especially since I was already an adult. i know what you mean about it hurting so much - and in France we kiss cheeks so it hurt a lot when i had to do it. i got on antibiotics for three years and switched up my diet, etc. I never wanted to go on roaccutane so i made changes from within after those three years of medecine. i almost stopped smoking, started cooking and eating healthy AND making sure i dont have digestion problems anymore (which i used to have as a vegan sadly). my best rec for digestion problems is to eat slowly & avoid wheat as much as possible or completely (i know that many americans cannot eat it bc of how poisoned it is in the states, maybe that's also the case in Canada?) & avoid refined sugar. i know that for some people it sounds like a very restrictive diet but if you learn to cook based on what works best for your digestion and your skin, you might end up loving what you eat! good luck Emma 👏
p.s. obviously if it gets worse in big cities, i would recommend moving elsewhere but i know it's easier said than done in some cases. ive noticed that when i spend 1-2weeks in a big city, I get a bit of acne, my throat gets easily sore and my hair becomes greasy and i get lots of dandruff. some of us have bodies that tell us how bad the environment is in big cities, it's a curse and a blessing at the same time.
p.s. ok i got further into the video and i wish you to find the perfect home outside of toronto!! 💃

I can't believe that Middlemarch isn't doing it for you, this is a wonderful classic novel and I've read it a number of times since my teenage years. I think four times now, I've always loved Dorothy and her story also the lives of those around her. I'm looking forward to reading this again soon. I'm glad that you are getting into the book now! I like Will too, he's super and wonderful character. I find in classics that lots of characters seem to be normal for those writers and very descriptive, too. Characterization important. I love Grendel and Cal, how long have you had Grendel now?

I hated it and wanted to find the snooze fest but I’d already dedicated too much time, then I got a migraine and listened to it in my dark room and it slowly got better until it was actually pretty good! 3.75 ✨

Heart of a Dog is great! I enjoyed it one summer long ago. Small Things Like These is very atmospheric. I also saved it for winter. I've yet to read Keegan's Antarctica...Thanks for another cozy video!

As an acne sufferer myself, what worked for me when I was diligent about it was eating lots of broccoli, taking vitamin A supplements, and steaming my face to open my pores and then washing my face after. Not saying it will work for you, just saying, it actually worked and I was shocked! I feel ya! It is rough. Hang in there!
(Edit to say it was hormonal as well)

    Hi Emma!
As a fellow cystic acne victim (?), I feel so seen! I switched up my birth control a few months back and had the worst breakout. It has taken me 6 months to get my skin looking half clear and this routine seems to work.
If it helps, this is what my skin care routine looks like right now:
    1. Lemon & tea tree oil facewash
    2. Salicylic Acid serum immediately after wash
    3. Once that's dry, I use a light moisturizer (preferably dermatologist recommended)
    4. Sun screen
And if I can feel acne coming on, I use a salicylic acid and niacinamide spot corrector which helps to dry the acne out before it ripens (for lack of a better word)
PS: I've got oily / combination skin for reference.

I've had terrible hormonal acne for about two years on and off, and finally succumbed to going to a derm where they gave me doxycycline. no joke, went away within a week. it's an antibiotic so if you're iffy about that I understand, but I took it for the full cycle (30 days) and it helped soooooo much. especially with that pain that feels like it's deep in your muscles.
