I am the original proud owner of a 1996 900ss/sp. immaculate and maintenance done and belts changed 3 years ago. 13000 miles. I still love it! No problem with cracking swingarm or steering head.

Sorry about the dog Dave.... always seemed odd you'd have a dog that would bite motorcycles but thats life bro..... I have an 01 900 ss barn find with 21000 miles..... I have had belts run off into the side cases to the point they put a grove into the case.... these belts are super heavy duty ..... If you cant buy that bike and put 100's worth of new belts on it, you have No Business owning a Ducati..... Im 63 and have owned every bike out there... you name it I owned it.... My Ducati 900 ss is my favorite.... 0 to 60 mph your in any race ..... Merry Christmas man

I bought a 1995 900ss sp brand new and rode it for about five years. I was never impressed with the handling or the rough nature of the bike. It was fast but difficult to ride smoothly. The Monster S2R1000 I had later was way more fun.

I loved my 98 after swapping the Marzocchis for Gold valved Showas and CVs for flatslides to wake up the throttle response. I also had a 900ie Monster that I liked almost as much.
A shim kit or dealer charges? No contest.
If you don't ride it much, belts are no issue.

Don't know the CR name ? here in Oz. During this era the 900SS Superlight seemed to be the pick of them, in yellow or red. Definate Classic already.Have seen the cracked swingarm but never broken, was pretty rare though. Have seen failed belts though, only in stored bikes given a run after being laid up a while, belt seems to get a shape memory and doesn't like being straightened out again but it's only a few valves, a bit of piston damage and maybe a stuffed head😁
There's good and bad belts out there, the genuine ones were dear but good quality except during the TPG era, they basically took over it to strip the assets.
Modern belts in all things belt drive have taken a dive since a big mob over your way took over the world's belt supply so be careful.
These days I'm happier on my Bullies👍

Hi Dave. My first job when I left school was manufacturing toothed drive belts. They are made with carbon fibre strands encased in rubber. Rubber is an organic compound that will deteriorate with age. So, whether the bike has been used or not, it's a good idea to replace them periodically to prevent a disaster.P.s. sorry to hear about Ingar.

I ride a 1998 900SS Final Edition (#048). It has 26,000 miles on it and is immaculate. Is it a powerful motorcycle? No. Is it the most satisfying motorcycle to ride that I own? Yes.
Belts are easy. Valve checks are easy, even though the top mounting bolt on the shock needs to be removed to check the vertical cylinder. It’s not a big deal.

I used to have a 1992 Ducati 600 cc, basically this bike's younger sister.. it was my first Ducati, and i loved it!.. not that much torque as a 900, but the frame more than makes up for that.. braking?.. nah.. don't need to.. These bikes take a bit of gettin' used to, as they REALLY want to turn in.. solution?.. Throttle!.. accelerate when you go INTO a corner, don't wait til the end..
The seat position is fine, as long as you do no more than 400 Km a day..., the seat is way too soft.. a harder seat will enable you to travel up to 800 Km a day..

Mate, sorry to hear about your dog. I don't think it's a problem with the belts, the 4v might be under more stress with all the bends, but 2v should be good to go. Awesome video.

I never had a four valve. I didnt know they were more bendy!

    • @adamroper1197
      @adamroper1197 9 місяців тому

With 4valves there's two cam pulleys at the top which makes the belt bend more times and at harder angles than on the pantah motors. Back in the day most belt failures were on 4 valves. I fully agree with what you said regarding not needing to change the belts on your bike, as I've heard a Ducati tech say the same thing. @@bullpencycles

Sorry about Inga. Nice bike. Swingarm issues only until 1992. Mirrows can be adjusted easily, just take them off and tighten the screw on backside a little. Ten year old tires, fluids, gas, etc… and the belt should be done to avoid risks. Hey, but I'm not your dad ;-) Best greetings from a German Ducatisti. Thank you for sharing your video. PS: In Europe the naked version is called nuda and with fairing carrenata.

The Pantah engine was different than the 900 engine, and in 500cc and 600cc I believe. The 650 Cagiva Alazurra used the same engine, they look good and are bargain at $2500 over a Ducati Pantah.

Yes, if you haven’t ridden it in 12 years, sell it. I’ve had 3 Super Sports, 8 total Ducati. That bike is ridden with purpose, spirited, or race. That’s a nice example. It needs the right front end.

Technically I believe you do not have to change the belts. I agree with your reasoning. However... if it was my Ducati and given they were changed roughly 10 years ago, I would change them. Why take a risk?

Shelf life for drive belts in general is 6 years, if stored correctly, that is an industry standard. That means without thermal cycling and in original packaging. If installed on a device (motorcycle) in a temperature and humidity controlled environment without air blowing or moving over the belt in general will maintain that for about 6 years. If the belt is of a higher quality for critical applications that involve life threatening applications (human transportation), It will even be higher than the 6 years even approaching over 10 years. Very sorry to hear about your loss, particularly this time of the year. From your videos, you obviously like animals. May the Good Lord give you peace brother. Tommy P.

@@bullpencyclesyea idk I definitely agree with you if my Honda’s timing belt can last 10+years and 200kmiles why can’t the belts on a Ducati last 5 years and almost no miles? My bike does also have 56k so it’s definitely been rode but man I wish I would have just listened to my gut and changed them right away would have saved me a lot of time lol
