The majority of Orthodox Jewish schools have great education. The children spend most there (some as long as 11 hour school day) learning religious studies, however they learn all the necessary skills to go out and support their families. Having the government dictate the curriculum in religious schools is a slippery slope.
They already do though according to this video. The law on the books is that they have to teach math and science and English at the same minimum level as a public school, and it is a minimum standard. This woman is saying that for her child and for all but two of the schools mentioned, the education isn’t sufficient to be at minimum standards. Clearly for some they aren’t learning the necessary skills in their schools. I am in a master program and study for about 10 hours a day and I can tell you that I certainly couldn’t do another class on top of that so there is no way the average small child can study religious studies for 11 hours a day and still have time to play and have a childhood AND learn history, math and science.
I had no idea....I'm one of those so-called secular Jews which is a polite way of saying....what I just said - I had no idea. When I think of great Jewish intellectuals I think of Chomsky, I think of Einstein, I even think of Maimonides who had to have been more broadly educated than this.
Not agreeing or disagreeing with the video but maimonides never went to school and learnt everything he knew was from learning the Bible Not saying we should do this these days but he was not more broadly educated!
How does a school not teach science? What are state laws for if it is not enforced? And sorrythese schools exist because parents send their children... pull them out and stop paying tuition, that's how you twist their arm.
Am I missing something? Why is she choosing to put her son in this school if it is so terrible? I genuinely want to know. I feel bad for the guy who went through it and felt unprepared. He didn't have a choice.
She got divorced and the dad made her agree to send their son to this type of school during the divorce process. Must be some parenting agrreement based on custody time with the child I am guessing.
No one is forcing parents to send their children there, they choose to send to yeshivas because of their religious values. In the age of acceptance and equality etc. not seeing much here. As for public funding, in comparison to public schooling, the yeshivas are a huge savings for the state, check your facts. As a Hassidic yeshiva alumni myself, I can attest to getting a solid basic education, superior to most public schools, as per their test scores. You can have gone thru the yeshiva system and still be extremely successful in the ''real world'', (and being a die-hard Mets fan!).
I didn't know they could have a law like that. I thought private schools were pretty much allowed to do whatever they want as long as they don't outright abuse the kids. What do Waldorf schools do in New York? I think they don't teach kids to read or count until they're like 7 or 8 and there's a lot of other stuff they don't do, but I'm not sure.
my sons attended these sorts of schools Two are successful realtors, one is in law school and another training to become a medical technician. These yeshivas offer a curriculum based on classical Jewish texts such as the Talmud which are full of wisdom and logic and advanced thinking skills. Other cultures recognize this---South Korean children study the Talmud because the Koreans recognize it's the power to develop the brain. What she is talking about can be filled in later--my sons attended accelerated catch up programs for Yeshiva graduates and now they are excelling in college. I hope she will learn to see the value in what her son is doing--learning logic, values, and a faith to carry him through this life.
Let’s examine this take with some critical thinking: Point 1 - Your example from your children is what we call an anecdote. It doesn’t tell us anything about the the impact a lack of secular education has on the overall population. Point 2 - While learning the Talmud as a part of an education can have a generally beneficial impact on cognition, that doesn’t indicate it’s an adequate replacement for a well rounded secular education. As we can see from the Korean example, they didn’t replace their secular education with Talmudic study, they added Talmudic study to enhance the education. As another example, we can look at modern orthodox schools which combine Jewish education with a strong secular education. On average, students from those schools are far better equipped and are far more likely to end up with successful careers, and to be positive contributing members of society, than those coming from Chareidi schools. In conclusion, while it’s an impressive accomplishment that your kids are enjoying successful careers in spite of the added difficulties owing to their lack of a good education, their success doesn’t refute the point that children are being harmed by being denied a basic education.
Once again ignorance rears its covered head especially in the comments section. Simple question, how come there so many successful entrepreneurs in these communities with a "minimal" education. I know the answer, but something for the rest of you haters to ponder.
Did you watch the video? She can't because the divorce courts are forcing her to send her child there. Besides, even if parents want to send their child to a religious school, the children deserve an education so the religious schools need to be forced to provide a more adequate education.
Thank you for highlighting this important topic. It is sad that there is a large segment of the New York City population who receive an inferior education despite existing laws meant to ensure a basic education for everyone. I am hopeful that public attention to the matter will generate much needed improvements in this regard.
I went to a Christian school for 6 years from 2nd to 8th grade and I got an excellent education. My school was super small so we really didn't have any options for electives but our core classes were excellent. We had Bible class every morning, Chapel on Tuesdays and everything was taught through the lens of a Christian worldview but I still entered my local public high school knowing just as much or more than the students who had been going to public school their whole lives. Religious schools can work, but laws need to be enforced to do so. I really hope that government officials step up and do what's right for the education of these children.
Are we to assume that the majority of the parents do not know of the shortcomings? My best guess is they know and don’t care. I would love to know how this information was disseminated, but until I do I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here...

Alot of yeshivas have a very good secular edication, and the students score much higher on the regents then alot of kids in public school. So to put all yeshivas under one roof because of a few schools that don't is 100% WRONG
What types of jobs await these Yeshiva graduates? Do they all become rabbis employed by the local temples? I would think that supply outpaces demand and more parents would be upset about the lack of career options.
Welfare dependence is common in these communities. Families have 10-20 children and live in section 8 housing controlled by the community. The men pray all day and barely work. Anyone who leaves the faith, had better find a new place to live too.

Can she sue the State to force the law to be enforced?
The fact that this is legal is very surprising. But then again, I’m European.

@@yanethm2698 that makes sense. Thank you for explaining.
Hello gorgeous how you doing today hope you're safe I would be glad if you get back to me ..
The schools are taking government funding so they are required to give a basic education
my sons attended these sorts of schools Two are successful realtors, one is in law school and another training to become a medical technician.
Let’s examine this take with some critical thinking:
Point 1 - Your example from your children is what we call an anecdote.
If you don't like it take your kids out of there
Did you watch the video?
Politicians will do nothing, because YOUR community leaders promised them their votes, as long as they don’t interfere 😐
