- Here's a quick video from my dives on Saturday. I went off of the shore of Jacksonville, FL with Nautical Divers LLC for a 3-tank dive on the S.S. Gulfamerica and a barge that had been sent to recover the wreck after it sank.
On April 11th, 1942 the S.S. Gulfamerica, on its maiden voyage, was struck by a single torpedo which was fired by the German submarine U-123 on its 8th war patrol. The German U-Boat then circled around the stricken tanker (in order to place the city of Jacksonville out of harms way) and raked it with surface weapons fire in an attempt to finish the kill.
The crew struggled for 5 days to keep the Gulfamerica afloat, however the ship ultimately succumbed to its damage and sank in roughly 70 feet of water only miles off of the Florida coast.
Some notable species spotted on this dive: Goliath Grouper, Barracuda, Parrot Fish, Sea turtle.
Huge thanks to the crew of the Research Vessel Explorer and the rest of the divers and my dive buddy.

Great underwater shots! Nice meeting you today at the distillery in St. Augustine. We look forward to watching your upcoming adventures. OneAdvansureatatime
Great meeting you both as well! I’ve got some notes on today, oh man…and not even tasting notes from the distillery. Anyways, maybe the next time our paths cross will be down in the keys!
Looks like an awesome dive!!
It was really nice, consistent water temperature of 73°f at the bottom, visibility was pretty good too.
@@NickGoesFar Damn, that's a very comfortable temp for sure hahaha
That is much better vis than expected at what 8mi offshore?
Awesome footage. I wanna try scuba one of these day. Thanks for sharing. New subscriber here. Stay Connected Live ❤️ Laugh
You should! It's such a surreal experience, there's a whole other side to this world we live on, that many don't see.
What’s the average viz in this area?
it wasn't stellar, off the top of my head I couldn't say, this dive was a long time ago - but we were fairly limited during my dive. The north Florida Atlantic diving, from what I have been told, is typically lower vis. That all being said, we were still able to see plenty of the wreck, and I never felt like I couldn't look around and spot the other divers.
@@NickGoesFar was the diving scene busy out there?
