It all comes together at about the 18 second mark... No effects, no "auto tune". No Overdub. No backing track. No excessive effects. No jack s#it for anything other than talent. Bang the intro chord, and the whole band comes together in less than two seconds. Tight, on time, amazing!! Effin awesome display of what "being a band" is all about. Used to play this live, followed by Free Ride ands All Right Now. Brought the effin house down in the early 80s'. Tons of spots in the song to stretch out and jam to.
@@Artoconnell I guess you kinda missed my point about the sound of the band "coming together", that's something that can't be faked, or manipulated. Or, at least couldn't have been done at the time that that was recorded. As far as overdrive is concerned, "back in the day" overdrive was simply from the tube pre amp getting an overdriven signal, that was cleanly reproduced by the amp's second stage. Today, as electronics have progressed, digital imitation of an overdrive signal is virtually sonically indistinguishable from a pre-amp solid state amp sound. I've got a Fender mini amp that can accurately mimic many, many different amp and cabinet combinations. The world has ( electronically) moved on. But, in 1972, that sure wasn't the case.
I first heard this about 55 years ago and it only gets better every time I hear it. This is what rock-n-roll is all about. Long live the memory of Steve Marriott and Humble Pie!!
One of Steve Marriott's definitive vocal performances, and there are so many! This is one of the greatest. Deftly blending elements of Free, the Stones, and the Faces, this track holds its own among those contemporaries and ensures its place in the Rock pantheon. It's unparalleled, unstoppable and a gleaming example of the best of Humble Pie.
I'm 66 now. I was 18 then. I think I'm holding up pretty well. I can't condone sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll for everyone, but it sure the Hell worked for me! Can I get an "Amen"?!?!
The opening of this song is a jewel of classic rock! The harmonies of raw acapella, followed by the kick of the drums and timing of the guitar riff... incredible!
I'm 67 and got turned on to them in Jr High School (I think 72) and am still rocking with Steve. Fun fact: My ring tone for my son calling. Oh yeah!!! RIP Steve. Such a sexy and talented man!

"Take back where I come from All I need, feeling blue. Friends that I made in my youth Now I'm older, I love them more." Great song from their Town & Country album.

Without doubt we had the BEST music, starting in the mid to late sixties and running through the seventies. We had the best music ever. I also was born in '55.
I was 19 when I first heard them. We had a group of arond 30 friends that all hung out together. Some in+out of trouble w/t 'man' so this was like our anthem. The louder you play it, the better it sounds. Neighbors put their house up for sale!!! Glad I lived in this era. Nothing free-er or better!
Haven't heard this on the radio since I was a kid in the 70s. Love the acapella beginning and the drums kick in and if that doesn't get your blood pumping you better check with your doctor 💊
Peacepot - One summer in the mid - seventies, you could NOT get pot anywhere, totally dry, but you could get hash, oddly enough. There was a famous drag car ' Hurst Hemi Under Glass' still around from the late 60's.That summer was known as 'Hash Hemi Under Glass'.
This may sound cruel, but when I was in the Air Force at times I was given temporary jail duty, watching over the prisoners at night to make sure they didn't commit suicide and such. I wasn't supposed to bring in my tape player, but one of the guys knew me from before and asked if I could sneak in this Humble Pie cassette. I said I would, and the five men in their cells got and danced to this song, singing out the lyrics and laughing at the irony of the song and their present situation. Before 30 days, however, they were all discharged from the Air Force, most of them being sent home afterward. But one was in for assault and battery against his training instructor and faced some years in prison. I ended up giving him the cassette and wishing him luck. I never saw or heard from him again, but I can just imagine that whole cell block dancing and singing to this song. Cheers!
Chef Jeff Tendick Nothing cruel about your story. Music is so important to people in jail. It can really bond inmates and correction officers. My son said when he was in jail in Georgia, the guys would get bored and then they'd all sing. They loved singing George Jone's He Stopped Loving Her Today. I bet your guys still remember you and that tape.
I am 68 now and when I was about 18 this came on the radio while cruising Gratiot with my best friend and I sang it to him as a joke because he had to be in court the next morning for something he really didn't even take part in. You'll never guess what he got. We are still friends today.
Saw them perform this song LIVE in 1973 - Humble Pie - My first big rock concert at Cobo Arena in Detroit City-the Home of Rock N Roll!!!! 10,000+ rockin' fans !!! Saw them same place 3X again in the next 2 years!!! Nothing better since. ⚘🎵🇺🇲💞
M. Dolan- I was returning my computer settings to the ones I've been using for years. Took me almost 4 hours, and going through two supervisors to get get the old settings back. But I couldn't stand the new construct. I've been on the net to long to adapt to a new format. Anyway, between the hours resetting the new configuration and discovering your replies, they came out scrambled. What I was able to decipher between the two was something about opium, the other I couldn't make out. I posted that comment a few months before I applied for I retirement. Thanks for the replies, they made me feel a bit younger. If you wish to resend them so I can make them out, you're more than welcome to. In either case enjoy Labor day.
saw them in 1982 in Houston Texas. very small venue. Rockabillys Bar. maybe about 60 people there. tickets were 12.00. what an experience! was the best!!!! stood right in front of Steve and was dancing. will never forget
I was born in '65 and I vaguely remember my elder bro and sis jamming to this...these dudes got a blend of hard rock, soul and everything else that made the era of music that my siblings enjoyed the BEST !
Wow... I just had a flashback... Humble Pie... Deep Purple... Ted Nugent... Led Z... E.L.P... Stones... B. Seger... S. Vaughan... Z Z Top etc. GREAT ROCK & ROLL. 🎶🎸🥁🎹🎺🎤🎶
61 and this was my first concert ever. February 21, 1975 Pittsburgh Civic Arena. Already had "Smokin" album and was wearing it out daily. My 14th bday was that month and my sister had said a month or so earlier that she would get me concert tickets. Led Zeppelin was also appearing that month but she couldn't get tickets so we went to Humble Pie, with guest REO Speedwagon who I had just seen on Don Kirschner's TV show and was impressed by the lead guitarist so we went. Well, we would've gone no matter who was appearing with them but ya man it was a great first ever rock concert.
Steve Marriott was one of a kind! Of all the covers I've heard of this song, including the likes of The Black Crows, Mr Big, Gov't Mule, etc none of them do this justice. The sheer rawness of it is unparalleled.
I saw him with the Small Faces, even with hundreds of screaming girls going mad during every song, those soaring pipes of his broke through. Without doubt the best rock frontman ever.
Vocal chords of stainless steel. Imagine singing over THOSE guitars for a few years. A soulful rock and roll freight train on stage, gloriously loud. Long live Humble Pie.
I remember in the 80's, in high school, getting a gram of black Nepalese from my uncle, for free. How cool is that? Native American, hippie uncle. Smoking from my uncle Melvin. I loved him. A gram of hash.

Greg Ridley’s one of my favorite bassists, fantastic musician ❤
What a performance by a great band with a excellent vocalist. ❤❤❤❤
Saw them live with Jo Jo Gunn and Foghat. One of the best concerts I ever attended. What a great time to have experienced.
My husband turned me on to Humble Pie 40 years ago when we got married, NEVER looked back! Hard and gritty..no crap..just voices and music.
Steve Marriott is one of the original screamers. In my 60s and still rocking. Love to all. Glenn
One of my top 100 albums smoking thank thank you Steve Marriott & company
Haven't heard this on the radio since I was a kid in the 70s. Love the acapella beginning and the drums kick in and if that doesn't get your blood pumping you better check with your doctor 💊
Went to see them in 70 or 71 with my older brother, amazing show. I think I was still high a week later. Sometimes I wonder how I survived the fun.
We all survivied because we shared those green chocolate chip cookies!
my first concert humble pie buffalo war memorial auditorium early 70s
I remember rocking this while smoking blond Lebanese hash on a pin under a glass
Stick the pin through cardboard, load the head up, light it, place glass over it, let it build up, use a straw that bends, lift edge of glass. INHALE.
Peacepot - One summer in the mid - seventies, you could NOT get pot anywhere, totally dry, but you could get hash, oddly enough. There was a famous drag car
' Hurst Hemi Under Glass' still around from the late 60's.That summer was known as 'Hash Hemi Under Glass'.
Pc by any chance do you know Bob hash woody or ruby
We served to either 83rd recon Vulcan gunner on alpha 15 mos 16romeo20. 👍👍👍🇺🇸
@@carlsaganlives5112 It was dry hash and hash oil came outta nowhere
Ah yes, blonde lebanese
Saw them in '72 at the St. Louis Keil Auditorium Annex unreserved seating on the concrete floor. Best concert I've ever witnessed.
Steve Marriott was electrifying. RIP Great blues singer!!!
Omfg, this is still a standout track above all of of the stuff coming out today. Rest In Paradise 🖤🌹 Amazing vocals
Cheers!
That would make an epic movie scene....
Really great.....
Chef Jeff Tendick thanks Brother.....
Chef Jeff Tendick Great story. Thx.
Chef Jeff Tendick God Bless You Chef. That is great and moving story.
I am 68 now and when I was about 18 this came on the radio while cruising Gratiot with my best friend and I sang it to him as a joke because he had to be in court the next morning for something he really didn't even take part in. You'll never guess what he got. We are still friends today.
Lol, the stories only get better with every passing year !! Keep rocking !!
On the WRIF no doubt.
The boogie must’ve been epic
Detroit Rock city. Horns up

Seen em in Saginaw with BLACK OAK ARKANSAS OPENING.. 1973 too. Good times
I meant to the tune of Bennie and the Jets.Rock and roll forever now, come on!
They don't make bands like this anymore, it was a different time but Humble Pie will forever remain timeless.....
Saw the Pie live in a shitty bar in Chicago 1978 blew me the fuck away.
Saw them in '72-electric! Slade played with them.
Check out Rival Sons

I am jealous. I've seen almost every major rock band but I missed these boys.
was doing the bar scene then and danced my ass off to this and knew every word ...we would all be singing really loud
Playing GTA 6 in 2026 and listening to this song while driving through the streets of Vice City.
Yes, I'm a time traveler. Wanna see more?
Lol. You only heard it from leaked video where Jason and Lucia are in house or their main Home.
That friggin bass line has been with me for the last 53 years and I’m loving it eternally
Love this bass line too. I’m tuned into every note he plays.
Yeah, that’s perfection..
Greg Ridley from the brilliant Spooky tooth, Steve
recruited him, for me he's up there with the best, and
Ive seen a few, I'm 73 in a fortnight.
One of the greatest and most underrated voices in Rock music! RIP Steve!
He could rock his ass off !
Pink Floyd used to babysit Steve's dog Seamus ( they have a song dedicated to the dog)
Underrated! I don't know about that. Many people think of Marriott as one of the greatest singers of all time.
@@glennmorris1807 who in Floyd did that? The song's on their Meddle album.
@@glennmorris1807 Isn't that song on the album Meddle?
Great Song!
Great Vibes!
Great Band!
Great Time

Steve Marriott,
You Will Never Be
Forgotten!❤
I got the opportunity to open a show for Humble Pie in Colorado Springs in the early 80's. That was a great experience ! One I will never forget !
Saw them in concert in 1972. It was awesome!
This, my fine friends, is ROCK AND ROLL at its finest. I turn 60 this year and tried everything this tune mentions.
Almost...
"I turn 60 this year and tried everything this tune mentions."
Bully for you.
Have you listened to Govt Mules version? Warren is unstoppable.
Yes we have
I'm 65 and remember when this song was released....it never gets old. I can listen to it over and over again ....it still kicks ass
saw them in 1982 in Houston Texas. very small venue. Rockabillys Bar. maybe about 60 people there. tickets were 12.00. what an experience! was the best!!!! stood right in front of Steve and was dancing. will never forget
It makes me happy to see that rockstar games is still choosing absolute banger songs for GTA 6
It’s also in GTA 5.
Absolutely love Humble Pie, such a raw and talented band that kicks major A$$! 👏 😍
me 65 now. These guys were so good. Rocking the Filmore. Time machine please
I was born in '65 and I vaguely remember my elder bro and sis jamming to this...these dudes got a blend of hard rock, soul and everything else that made the era of music that my siblings enjoyed the BEST !
Born in 65 myself. Didn't understand back then. But I do now!
Drew Tindor I hear ya brother !!!!
Drew Tindor Same as me!
We "Baby Boomers" had the greatest music of all time. Today's youth has SHIT!!!
That is so true music today sucks
We have King Gizzard, Oh Sees, LCD Soundsystem, Boris, and quite a few others. I'd say we're pretty well set but nothing beats the classics
these are the best you will ever hear
That is true and I will always be true who the end of time👍
Saw them in 72 at Saratoga ,New York. Thrill of a lifetime!!!!!
I am 67
This is one of my favorite songs ❤️❤️❤️
Caught H Pie and James Gang 50 years ago at Boston Tea Party...What a show one of the best.
Wow... I just had a flashback... Humble Pie... Deep Purple... Ted Nugent... Led Z... E.L.P... Stones... B. Seger... S. Vaughan... Z Z Top
etc. GREAT ROCK & ROLL. 🎶🎸🥁🎹🎺🎤🎶
This song makes me miss the hell out of Steve Marriott . what a voice . I hope he is still rocking with the rest of the best we lost
I remember him spitting into the crowd... psycho... gotta love it
Yep..spitter he was!!
Good times
Last time I saw him he was spitting straight up in the air and catching it. Much better than being spit on, I say... I was right up front.
reminds me of wayside
While I may be old--at 67--I used to play, and recognize and appreciate a good bass lick. I only wish I could sound so good on my 68 Jazz Bass.
I got to do that lick with hem 40+ years ago in Houston....
One of the most bad ass songs of all time. ❤️
I don't play this often but when I do, all the neighbors hear it.
I don't always play Humble Pie...
But when i do...
The neighbors can hear it...
Lol should be a "meme" or whatever the hip kids say these days...
This stupid line is overused.
My neighbors are hearing right now on my 50 watt amp. You go boy.
Mr. D. LMAO
This simply has to be cranked while listening
over 50 years old and still has that mojo, ridley's bass is brilliant, just a great tune, marriott at his best.
Steve Marriott was one of a kind! Of all the covers I've heard of this song, including the likes of The Black Crows, Mr Big, Gov't Mule, etc none of them do this justice. The sheer rawness of it is unparalleled.
One of rocks best front men
He was living it
I saw him with the Small Faces, even with hundreds of screaming
girls going mad during every song, those soaring pipes of his
broke through. Without doubt the best rock frontman ever.
Great especially in 1972 ❤❤
Seen it live!! Bitd
Steve Marriott. What a great rock vocalist.
I'm always so surprised that so many people don't even know this song.
They don't know music then
Awesome 👏 tune!!
I've always loved this song
I know what you meen.....im like where you been ?? in a cave....under a Rock..?? geezzzz
Lp flight to nowhere
Real music. Steve was a true rock n roll voice. Still get off on this one.
Best beginning to any song. As good today as yesterday and that was a long time ago.
Vocal chords of stainless steel. Imagine singing over THOSE guitars for a few years. A soulful rock and roll freight train on stage, gloriously loud. Long live Humble Pie.
This is a great song to blast in your car as you're driving down the highway
Mate, I'm going.to play this several times on my way to the South West from Chi-Town. I am so looking forward to it!
Everyone loves singing this song
I remember in the 80's, in high school, getting a gram of black Nepalese from my uncle, for free. How cool is that? Native American, hippie uncle. Smoking from my uncle Melvin. I loved him. A gram of hash.
