This song brings back good memories of the early 90's. I was renting a room in a warehouse where my drummer was living illegally and selling weed to all the stoner kids in our small town. Those were the days. I fucking miss the 90's.
i was a teenager, smokin, drinkin, fightin, fucking, jammin, stealin, crankster gangster. one of our hustles was buyin levi's for the lebanese dudes. they would pick up 5 or 6 of us in a van, at fred meyer. we would travel to every store we could, and buy the limit. i would even disguise myself and go in twice. made a lot of money, cause apparently, they could sell em oversees for a bill. we were buying a lot of crank (meth wasnt really around yet). it was awesome. not proud of all it, but man i had fun. todays world is insane. the 90s were the last great years.
This is so much better then Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd has way better albums then that, but this album is a classic. Like is Mellow Gold better then Dark Side of the Moon? Fuck yes it is, is it better then 'Wish You Were Here' or 'Animals'? That's a harder questions.
Getting old sucks. Nearly 30 years ago. This song brings me back to those care free days. Goin to bed at night with this cd on my stereo stoned out of my mind. Without any kind of worry. Then i woke up and suddenly im in my 40s. But i wouldnt trade it for anything. Im so happy i grew up then and not in todays insane world. The 80s and 90s were the best time to be a kid.
agreed. im so glad i grew up when phones were still on cords. i got introduced to the internet in my teens, and it hadnt gotten that toxic yet, so all in all i avoided becoming like... a lot of people
You've got it backwards. You've enjoyed this amazing album longer than most. You should feel lucky. I definitely agree with you about growing up in the 80's and 90's though, assuming you had decent parents.
@@rars0n yeah i hear ya. And i did have good parents. And i am beyond grateful for it. I know many people sadly can have some pretty terrible parents. I feel like it was a blessing that i dont know what i did to deserve.

The drum solo at 3:01 sounds like Dale Crover. Like the heavy handed playing and the fills. I know Melvins are actually in the Beercan video but I've never heard a mention of that particular part
When it goes heavy at 1:26 listen to that, then listen to the credits music for the Breaking Bad episode Over (S2 EP10) and tell me if they sound similar.
Real Beck is many things as I see it - bit of a rarity to have an artist transform and re-invent themselves so prolifically - this is maybe just the thing you (and me) like the most.

For real
It implies deep sincerity or genuine connotation.

Ah the early 90's.... as a teenager, hands down the best time of my life.
this album tripped me about as hard as dark side of the moon

Throw a like down if you've ingested ample amounts of drugs in the 90's, and this song brings it back like a wet cigarette.

best song from this album...
This song is my life
Anyone who has ever worked retail or at a fast food restaurant can relate to this song sometimes
Shadow in the spoon and shoot the moon is a heroin reference
So is "big fat veins pointing into my face, telling me to get busy cleaning up this place"
Wish Beck talked about this more, but understand why he doesn't. It's probably the blackmail that kept him in Scientology for so long.

It is for sure
I also think/thought it is/was ". . .the cops picked up the smoke."
they need to have music for this (like for the drums or guitar) cuz that is a sick drum beat and I want to know what he is hitting

One foot in the Grave and his previous noise efforts... not to mention theres an argument for Odelay. but Mellow gold is the last 10/10 Beck no doubt
3:07 scared me when I had my first listen, but in the best way possible
1:56 The lyric is "big fat fingers", not "big fat veins" - what the fuck does that even mean?
2:22 "Like a pretzel in the stars"

I got a job making money for the man
Throwing chicken in a bucket with a soda pop can
Puke-green uniform on my back
I had to set it on fire in a vat of chicken fat
I leaped on the counter like a bird with no hair
Running through the minimall in my underwear
I got lost downtown, couldn't find a ride home
Sun went down, I got frozen to the bone
'Til a hooker let me share her fake fur coat
As I took a little nap, the cops picked up us both
I tried to explain I was only trying to get warm
I knew I never ever should have burned my uniform
He said, "Too bad, better bite the bullet hard, son."
I didn't have no teeth, so I stole his gun
And I crawled out the window with my shadow on the spoon
Dancing on the roof, shooting holes in the moon (gettin' busy)
'Cause I ain't gonna work for no soul-suckin jerk
I'm gonna take it all back and I ain't sayin' jack
I ain't gonna work for no soul-suckin jerk
I'm gonna take it all back and I ain't sayin' jack
I'm standing right here with a beer in my hand
And my mouth is full of sand and I don't understand
Fourteen days, I been sleeping in a barn
Better get a paycheck tattooed on my arm [beck.com: headache and a paycheck]
Whistling Dixie with the Dixie cup filled
With the barbecue sauce and the dental floss chill
Big fat veins pointing into my face
Telling me to get busy cleaning up this place
I got bent like a wet cigarette
And she's coming after me with a butterfly net
Riding on a bloodhound, ringing a bell
Black cat wrapped and I'm rolling out to hell
Pencil on my leg and I'm trying not to beg
Taking turns baking worms with the bacon and eggs
Now they got me in a birdcage flapping my jaw
Like a parcel of stars just waiting to fall [beck.com: pretzel in the stars]
So give me what I got to get so I can go
'Cause I ain't washing dishes in a ditch no more
I ain't gonna work for no soul-suckin jerk
I'm gonna take it all back and I ain't sayin' jack
I ain't gonna work for no soul-suckin jerk
I'm gonna take it all back and I ain't sayin' jack
No no no no, soul sucking jerk, soul sucking jerk
No soul sucking jerk, soul sucking jerk
I ain't gonna work for no soul-suckin jerk
I'm gonna take it all back and I ain't sayin' jack
Ain't gonna work for no soul-suckin jerk
