This is the story of a bricklayer who became a labor leader during the Revolution, became a Party apparatchik during the Civil War and its aftermath, overseeing construction and industry. He rose to prominence as a Party man experienced in logistics and construction, and as a result oversaw a large part of Stalin's First Five Year Plan. Poor supplies from Kazakh factories resulted in poor-quality buildings that were notoriously unstable, which almost led to this bricklayer's death in the Stalinist purges later in the decade. When WWII broke out, he was soon to be on Beria's list, but an old friend in the government from the Revolution days bailed him out and got him a position in the Army as a logistics officer. When the disaster of Barbarossa and its aftermath gutted the Red Army, the bricklayer saw himself catapulted to higher and higher offices - where he excelled as a logistical wizard. He would rise to the rank of Major General, and participated in the famous battle of Kursk. He took command of a tank detachment during the clash at Prokhorovka and helped blunt the German advance, later earning him a medal as a Hero of the Soviet Union. He would remain in the Soviet Army in the aftermath, seeing the start of the Cold War and the division of Germany. As a general in the logistical corps, he would go on to oversee the construction of missile bases and rocket test sites like Plokštinė, Kapustin Yar, and the Baikonur Cosmodrome. He would later record disillusionment with the Soviet regime throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, and was one of the first Soviet officials to embrace the free market - leading to him becoming exceedingly wealthy in the real estate, construction, and oil businesses.

    • @Choalith_Ikanthe
      @Choalith_Ikanthe 3 місяці тому +5

I find it disturbing how accurate the last verse is. We go from the height of Socialism... starving and unable to buy food, completely unmotivated to bother working, freezing in desolation...to Economic Prosperity with "foreign shops all over town"... and it's sang like a lamentation, as if bleak starvation was literally preferable to McDonalds. For shame, wearing Levis, when you could be heroically standing in a bread line.
Leaping right into declarations of rejecting free enterprise, the Left rising again, instigating aggression against other nations, all perfectly mirrors how many young people today think Socialism, and it's ignorant notions and hollow rhetoric of "peace and love", is the answer. The blocks only begin to pile into a game over after they've decided to leap right back into their old Socialist ways, after we spent the entire song seeing how it tore them down, layer by layer.
"Better than it was before" seems like exactly what they had after they sang about the markets going free... and they were still willing to throw the game despite that. And with western nations today wanting to combat inflation with Price Controls and Universal Basic Incomes, making Offensive Speech illegal, and treating people with any kind of Free-Market Capitalist Libertarian ideas as universally villains because they don't worship at the altar of "Peace and Love"... the whole world is creeping towards a Game Over screen.
      It's a grim warning.
Some people would rather arrange the blocks and toil, forever and a day, before they would learn a lesson.

So, the story is as follows: a young peasant comes to Moscow and becomes a worker to make some money; however, horrible work conditions make him a supporter of Lenin, so he welcomes the Revolution. Under the Soviet rule, he keeps his old job and works extremely hard; he has second thoughts about Stalin's methods, but he keeps his doubts to himself, joins the Party and (at some point before WWII) becomes a Red Army senior officer in the Tank Troops. After the war he continues to hold high authority positions with access to secret bases and the space program, but, by 1970s, his faith in the Party is completely lost. In the 80s, the coming crisis assures him that Gorbachev's Perestroika can't give the country the much--needed change, so he (apparently) decides to use his Old Bolshevik influence to help Yeltsin's career. In the 90s, despite being very old, he uses his government position to make huge money and become an oligarch. However, his... grandson, I suppose, rejects his legacy during Putin's rule and becomes a communist once again.

I just realized that that complete history of the soviet union video also describes a game of tetris as well as its on the surface story.
The video starts off with the player being completely new to playing tetris, he's making mistakes and getting used to the gameplay, wondering why he cant "have a long one" to fit into that area. As Russia becomes communist, the player is getting more used to how to fit the blocks in perfectly, the game starts to get more intense as the pace increases, because the player is getting better overall and is able to fit the pieces in as he becomes more, like, autonomous with himself. As it get towards the 60s and 80s the player is getting more tired of it, it doesnt change much at all, and he doesnt feel theres a point to it. He has "plenty of gold" (high score), he decides to say "fuck it" and just goes apeshit (around 90s), as Russia gets more towards its greedy part the player is just laying down blocks haphazardly, leading to a game over.

    Lyrics
To Moscow I came seeking fortune
But they’re making me work til I’m dead
The bourgeoisie have it so easy
The Tsar’s putting gold on his bread
The people of Moscow are hungry
But think what a feast there could be
If we could create a socialist state
That cared for the people like me:
I am the man who arranges the blocks
That descend upon me from up above.
They come down and I spin them around
Til they fit in the ground like hand in glove.
Sometimes it seems that to move blocks is fine
And the lines will be formed as they fall -
Then I see that I have misjudged it!
I should not have nudged it after all.
Can I have a long one please?
Why must these infernal blocks tease?
I am the man who arranges the blocks
That continue to fall from up above.
Come Muscovite! Let the workers unite!
A collective regime of peace and love.
I work so hard in arranging the blocks
But the landlord and taxman bleed me dry
But the workers will rise! We will not compromise
For we know that the old regime must die.
Long live Lenin, kill the tsar!
We salute the sickle and star!
I am the man who arranges the blocks
That continue to fall from up above.
The food on your plate now belongs to the state
A collective regime of peace and love.
I have no choice in arranging the blocks
Under Bolshevik rule, what they say goes.
The rule of the game is we all are the same
And my blocks must create unbroken rows.
Long live Stalin! He loves you!
Sing these words, or you know what he’ll do...
I am the man who arranges the blocks
That are made by the men in Kazakhstan.
They come two weeks late and they don’t tessellate
But we’re working to Stalin’s five year plan.
I am the man who arranges the tanks
That will make all the Nazis keep away
The Fuhrer is dead, and Europe is Red!
Let us point all our guns at the USA.
    We shall live forever more!
We can start a nuclear war!
I am the man who arranges the blocks
That are building a highly secret base.
Hip hip hurrah for the USSR!
We are sending our men to outer space.
I work so hard in arranging the blocks
But each night I go home to my wife in tears -
What’s the point of it all, when you’re building a wall
And in front of your eyes it disappears?
    Pointless work for pointless pay
This is one game I shall not play.
I am the man who arranges the blocks!
But tomorrow I think I’ll stay in bed.
The winter is cold, I’ve got plenty of gold
And I’m standing in line for a loaf of bread
    Maybe we’d be better off
    If we brought down Gorbachev
I am the man who arranges the blocks
That continue to fall from up above.
The markets are free! So much money for me!
Tell me, why should I care for peace and love?

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
There lived a certain man in Russia long ago
He was big and strong, in his eyes a flaming glow
Most people looked at him with terror and with fear
But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear
He could preach the Bible like a preacher
      Full of ecstasy and fire
But he also was the kind of teacher
      Women would desire
      Ra ra Rasputin
      Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
      Ra ra Rasputin
      Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on
He ruled the Russian land and never mind the Czar
But the kazachok he danced really wunderbar
In all affairs of state he was the man to please
But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze
For the queen he was no wheeler dealer
Though she'd heard the things he'd done
She believed he was a holy healer
      Who would heal her son
      Ra ra Rasputin
      Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
      Ra ra Rasputin
      Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on
But when his drinking and lusting
      And his hunger for power
Became known to more and more people
      The demands to do something
      About this outrageous man
      Became louder and louder
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
"This man's just got to go", declared his enemies
But the ladies begged, "don't you try to do it, please"
No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms
Though he was a brute, they just fell into his arms
Then one night some men of higher standing
Set a trap, they're not to blame
"Come to visit us", they kept demanding
      And he really came
      Ra ra Rasputin
      Lover of the Russian queen
They put some poison into his wine
      Ra ra Rasputin
      Russia's greatest love machine
He drank it all and said, "I feel fine"
      Ra ra Rasputin
      Lover of the Russian queen
They didn't quit, they wanted his head
      Ra ra Rasputin
      Russia's greatest love machine

Tetris is basically the distillation of communism.
Your successes disappear immediately, but your failures pile up until you die.
Fun fact: did you know that when they taught AI how to play tetris, it deduced that its only possible recourse is to lose?
It went through every possible scenario until it realized that the only way this torture ends is by losing. It then decided to pile up the blocks to the top until the game ended.
We build a thinking machine, teach it nothing but how to play tetris, and it'd rather die.
And that's my argument against communism.

To everyone saying this song is prophetic, it's worth nothing that Putin's invasion streak began before this video was made. Russia invaded Georgia in 2008, which may be what is being referenced by "we shall regain the Georgian soil" in the post-USSR part of the song.

3:58 "what's the point of it all when you're building a wall but in front of your eyes it disappears" this line has so much meaning not just for the soviet union but as a metaphor for life. I just basically got completely alienated from everyone I had ever loved and cared about apart from a couple family members, and that this was planned all along just to poke fun at me, and tonight I came back to this because I can now truly understand what is meant by this. You are building up, putting so much care into and just putting all of your time, energy, joy, personality into everything just for it to get torn down almost instantly.

It was quite common for public works projects to be built just to be torn down later since work was required to maintain the system and a sea of the desiderata wasn’t required to artificially depress wages and automation wasn’t available to deal with every in order to institute UBI or abolish money in general

I am the man who arranges the blocks that continue to fall from up above, the food on your plate now belongs to the state, a collective regime of peace and love
I have no choice in arranging the blocks, under Bolshevik rule what they say goes, the rule of the game is we all are the same and my blocks must create unbroken rows
Long live Stalin, he loves you, sing these words or you know what he’ll do!
    (Сиберия урод)
I am the man who arranges the blocks that are made by the men in Kazakhstan, they come two weeks late and they don’t tesselate, but we’re working to Stalins five year plan
I am the man who arranges the tanks that will make all the nazis keep away, the füher is dead and Europe is red, let us point all our guns at the U S A
We shall live for ev er more
We can start a nuclear war!
I am the man who arranges the blocks that are building a highly secret base, hip hip hoorah for the USSR
We are sending our men to ou ter space
I work so hard in arranging the blocks but each night I come home to my wife in tears, what’s the point of it all? When you’re building a wall? And infront of your eyes it disappears?
Pointless work for pointless pay, this is one game I shall not play!
I am the man who arranges the blocks
But to morrow, I think I’ll stay in bed
    The winter is cold
    I’ve got plenty of goold
And I’m standing in line for a loaf of bread
Maybe we’d be better off, if we brought down GORBACHEV!
I AM THE MAN WHO ARRANGES THE BLOCKS THAT CONTINUE TO FALL FROM UP A BOVE, THE MARKETS ARE FREE SO MUCH MONEY FOR ME, WHY SHOULD I CARE FOR PEACE AND LOVE?
THE MARKETS ARE FREE, *SO MUCH MONEY FOR ME* , (tell me!) WHY SHOULD I CARE FOR PEACE AND LOVE, PEACE AND LOVE, PEACE AND LOOOOOVE!!
And now the wall is down, the marxists ffrown, there’s foreign shops, all over town!
    When in red square
    Well don’t despair
    There’s Levi’s and McDonald’s there
The US gave us crystal meth
and Yeltsin drank him self to death
But now that Putin’s put the boot in
    Who’ll get in our way?
So we reject free enterprise, And once again the left will rise, prepare the flags to be unfurled, cuz’ we’re seceding from the world
We shall regain the Georgian soil
We shall obtain the arctic oil
We shall arrange the blocks and toil, for forever and a day.
    (GAME OVER!)

thanks for the transcript, at first I thought he said he was "standing in line for *love of red*", which didn't make much sense to me, given what happened next

      Gjelpsy - Ельцин (Eltsen I think, I don’t know English 🤷‍♂️)
He was an alcoholic. That’s why he «drunk himself or death». he died in 2007, relatively recently.
