Yes. And i don't mind English in kpop, firstly i have no right to dictate what people sing in but sometimes it just feels so forced and out of place. Especially in "rapping" it's like *lemme just through in a random English word at the end of every sentence to prove that I can rap*.
And then there's multiple cases of kpop misusing English words and slang.
There's something called too much honestly if there's a balance that makes the most sense
I think it's more to do with who's writing the songs now. If you look at the credits, there are a lot of English as a first language credits both for writing and production.
A lot of companies have been buying full English demos and then tweaking them for K-pop.

Many idols aren't Korean either by ethnicity or nationality. A lot of the songs aren't fully in the Korean language, if at all. If the definition of K-pop reflects that, then it's simply pop music coming out of a Korean company. So yeah, maybe VCHA is K-pop.

Yes and no. It depends cus i think they are tryna advertised in usa and other places so they can be popular. Kpop is more than a sub genre. Its a genre itself(because kpop sounds different than normal pop. Like I cant find a poppy normal pop song like a twice kpop)
Well I disagree with your statement. Listen to physical by dua lipa and I can't stop me. You can't tell me they don't sound alike. Kpop just has more drastic changes from their verses to pre chorus to chorus. And now that is changing mostly because of hybe.

@@dotcom3015 bro every song is altered to fit the artist. I'm not talking about the production rather the melody of the chorus. Most of the songs released under the big 4 companies are written by westerns. Look at the credits.
@@hurryhurryhurryhurry I just listened to both, it’s literally just the drum kicks which is just par course for the 80s sound. Physical has the extra synth from gimme gimme gimme and doesn’t have a post chorus like twice. The chorus rhyme schemes aren’t similar and the lines are broken differently (jihyo and nayeon fully sing their lines, dua has pauses in the middle of her lines). The writers aren’t the same but dua lipa did write behind the mask for twice. I like both songs, I just dont think there’s enough similarities to merit a comparison any more than you would compare duas physical to Olivia newtons physical. Yeah they both use the phrase let’s get physical but they’re different sonically
The other issue with Kachi had been that they had zero affiliation with Korean companies, managers, etc. If I remember correctly, didn't Simon Cowell put that group together? There was something kind of icky or predatory about Kachi? It felt like an outsider trying to copy what they see without understanding the heart of it? Cosplay. Were they even promoted or presented to the Korean people? I dunno. Maybe if Kachi had been created in partnership with JYP or SM or something, it would have been a different story. Something about Kachi just felt very inauthentic to me personally, but I didn't really care that they weren't Korean.
I prefer Korean songs to stay in Korean, tbh. A lot of times the English versions don't make sense _at all._ Then there's also the fact that English song writers sometimes just focus on melody and flow because they know their lyrics are going to be changed anyway so why put in the effort? There are some really good English versions, but a lot of them just feel like nonsense demos or poor translations.

Edit: 28:00 I think “Back for more” from TXT is the only English song that I liked from K-pop English releases.
39:49 VCHA is going songs in englisch but the whole concept and training ,filming ,recording etc is done the kpop way they are kpop with songs in englisch

Global pop is normal pop cuz considerably English as a language is known as a global language , cuz is very globalized to the point that almost every country is aware of this language and many even speak it , also most schools teach it .
This was always going to happen. It seems inevitable. As a kid whenever I watched Anime from Japan. The titles of the anime's was always in english. This goes back as far as the 70's. For some reason's Japan and Korea has always had a fascination in using english words. Unlike China. They like to translate things into their language. China would put meaning to the name of the product from the west, while Japan and Korea would just use the english word slightly altered to their countries language. Just a thought.
For me the only song there I prefer the English version over the original is “Chasing that feeling” by TXT cuz I like the meaning behind it more than the original. (Fun fact the original version has in most verses different lyrics from the English version which I find fascinating cuz they literally could be 2 different songs )
Yeah sometimes when I listen to songs it feels like it's more English than Korean sometimes I think they just put more English maybe so we can understand I don't know i dont call it Kpop i call it Epop but ya sometimes i wish that they can do more Korean in songs
I feel like Kpop is a big place that can accomodate songs heavier on English and songs heavier on Korean. As an international fan, there is something valuable in how me only understanding bits of Korean makes the melody stand out more and me not have to think about cheesy pop lyrics, but I imagine it's kind of the opposite for Korean fans.
Safe to say : every full English songs (or more than 90% English words, with just random Korean word) is promoted outside South Korea in international market and charts, is just Pop songs/singers. Unless there local Korean sing full English targeted towords Korean only and charted in Korea using Korean platforms then it is Korean pop. F**k to all Americans/Western say Asians for Asians. As we Asian feel violated not using our own language when speaking.

Tbh I’m glad that there’s more English in kpop songs now, as a non-korean speaker i find it easier to relate to a song when I understand at least some of the lyrics. For example, recently RM released his song Come Back To Me and it was in English, the lyrics were so emotional and deep I immediately fell in love with this track. But I understand that it happened mostly because I was able to understand the lyrics without translation or subtitles and if it was in Korean I can see myself skipping on this song a lot because the sound is not particularly what I would often go for. But the lyrics and the emotional appeal did it for me. So I’m all for English in kpop songs.
And we need to understand that using English in songs is not only their wish to appeal to American music industry. English is a lingua franca, people from ALL continents of the world understand it. I’m not from English speaking country myself but even for me hearing English in songs is important as well as for many non-korean asians, south-americans, latinas, europeans, slavs, africans etc.
But i also understand that sometimes you can feel the song without English lyrics. For example in J-hope’s Boy Meets Evil (until the English chorus) there’s only korean language but every time I listen to this song I can’t help becoming emotionally invested in it and i love this song even without english verses (even though I would die out of happiness if there was more english or a whole English version).
Honestly, I don’t mind English lyrics. That said, I do think they need to do a better job at having the lyrics make sense. I’m tired of the English lyrics being completely nonsensical.
Agreed! If their English lyrics make sense then it’s so much easier to recommend the song to non-K-pop fans. If the words are just randomly tossed into the song for the sake of it, it’ll sound unnatural and cringey.
The reason for more English is due to the markets that are the largest consumer internationally, here is the top 10 Japan, U.S, China, Germany, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Canada, UK, France and English is the most spoken language in the world.
Although there might be more English lyrics at least we still have Korean lyrics the songs are still based off of K-pop and based in Korean but there’s a little to much English
Girl groups are generally more focused on kpop listeners streaming and boy groups are more focused on physical sales to core fandom. Since kpop became more international, now it has more English so more people can sing along to some parts even if they don't speak Korean. NewJeans especially has long long periods of one or more English words (in seconds) so you feel like you are singing along to the song easier and longer. For example, look at Cool With You.
I wanted to point out that the amount of songs or their length doesn’t influence the ranking because they’re calculating the percentage. A group can have one song with one English word and nine korean words and it would be 10% English and a group can have 10 songs with 10 English words and 90 korean words in it (it would be 100 English words and 900 korean words in total) and they would still have percentage of 10% of English words in their songs.
Imo I feel like at this time sometimes it feels like there is no k in kpop anymore I get trying to be global but that’s one of the reasons I used to like kpop…I’m fine with some English because I know there are words in English that aren’t in Korean.
10:28 i actually thought Blackpink cuz they have many tracks only in English (especially their b-sides from the recent album ) . Gidle is really surprising to me cuz I always had the feeling that before Soojins departure they had most lyrics in Korean oder more in Korean than English.

All this leads back to balance, I agree partly with the "removing the K from Kpop" in a way but can it be done without stripping away the identity of Kpop? The language, the MVs, the idiosyncrasies as a whole just to cater to a market that is inherently against it because it's "made by foreign people" (I mean this for all countries)? Like english is fine when it makes sense but I sometimes feel like it's added because "we need an english word here, let's look for a cool word!"

Blackpink must be the number 1, the album had 4 songs fully in english and 4 of them like 50/50. And Bork Pink had 4 songs fully in english, and the other 4 had so much english (ex. Shut down and Pink venom)

For me personally as a Filipino we have a lot of songs in English but it is still considered as OPM/ Filipino Music.

If Philippine Pop/OPM (original pilipino music) has english and tagalog lyrics why not KPOP with Korean and English as lyrics?
This doesn't really work as an argument because the Philippines were colonized by the US, and English is the second official language of the Philippines- first obviously being Tagalog. SK does not have English as a second official language, it is only Korean.
English is also taught in all classes in the Philippines, and it's shown as "professional" and "educated" if you speak English. In all types of media, like the news or television, English is used. This is why in the Philippines people codeswitch so much that there's a word for it, "Taglish", and if you ever went to the Philippines, you can get away with knowing only English. Now in East Asian countries- not so much.
Also using English helps Filipinos from around the country communicate with each other, because even though Tagalog was chosen as the national language, there are hundreds of regional languages that people speak. My mother and a Filipino guy we met when meeting extended family, were only able to communicate with each other in English, because the guy didn't know Tagalog, he only knew his regional language, and both his and my mom's regional language are different.

For 4 weeks at #1 meanwhile another one english song stays for 6 weeks at #1 while yet another for 11 weeks. Can't we just leave the korean opinions to Koreans only.

holy shit i didn’t think anyone else really knew about z-girls and z-boys (zpop). they were from a really small company from which all of their groups have disbanded from shitty treatment cri. like the company has since essentially tried to wipe out the existence of these groups.
also: henry’s song monster exists in english, korean, and chinese and tbh i prefer the english and chinese versions to the korean :p
I don't think Lesserafim's Easy was meant to display AMAZING vocals. But they constantly performed that song LIVE, their mics were on and they were in mid air and doing some difficult moves while singing. The whole performance was stellar. But it isn't a good vocal song by default. So if they just sit there and sing it, it won't be impressive. That's not their fault. Now about SK freaking out about kpop members being another ethnicity, or singing in another language, it just gives me xenophobia and...some racism vibes.

If the K-pop bands want to make it big and make real money, they have to hit the international audience. Like you said Le Sserifim has fifty percent English lyrics, which is brilliant because now they have reached Yunjin’s home country. They are the fastest K-pop group to attend Coachella probably because of their English lyrics, and to be honest their looks. Bands like G-Idle, IVE and New Jeans figured it out, to expand their audience they need English lyrics.
I think performing at Coachella is more related to hybes connections. They also have new jeans that have more palatable songs for Americans taste, they would have made more sense
English versions of songs make no sense lyrically and they aren't very good either. The Japanese versions of songs make no sense to me either but in Japan, they originally were not allowed to perform their Korean songs so they translated it. This process makes more sense for older generations like 1st and 2nd gen as they did this when they performed in China and the US as well but now that K-Pop is more recognized it does not make sense to continue making different versions, especially in the US. Making songs in another language was seen as respectful but since they are utterly butchering the English grammar and pronunciation the songs are not well received and ignored. Also if the song is already partially English and Korean why remove the Korean to make it fully English but not remove the English and make a full Korean song it is weird.
This process really only works for artists who are big in Korea and Japan like SNSD and Seventeen who release Japanese versions of their English songs and Korean versions of their Japanese songs. It is not one-sided so it is accepted a lot better and boosts popularity. However, the English versions are not well received and accepted so it is better to keep the mash-up of Korean & English and make original English songs separately, not English version songs.

Tbh if Koreans are making/accepting music with English lyrics and are consuming it themselves, then I don’t have an issue.
Dynamite was a (controversial 😅) English song, but ended up being one of BTS most successful songs in SK AND Japan, which is interesting.
I think Bang Pd is talking about removing the "K" and making it just Pop music, not language just name-wise. I understand removing the K- from K-pop when it is not in Korean. Songs like "Dynamite" (BTS), "Ice Cream" (Blackpink), and "Cupid" (Fifty Fifty) should not be considered K-Pop songs they are just Pop songs. Being categorized took the songs out of bigger categories that they deserved to compete in because the songs were seen as other. Similar to how songs like "Hare Hare" (Twice), "Perfect World" (Twice), and "Do the Catwalk" (SNSD) are considered J-Pop songs because they are in Japanese. This affects the most successful songs and artists when they perform in different languages because they are kept in a bubble. For BTS their Japanese songs are not even considered J-Pop because of how intertwined they are with the K-Pop label. It is unfair to artists and their work if anything. K-Pop artists have missed out on a lot of recognition and awards because of how easily the K-pop title can be used against them. People in the industry obviously understand this a lot better than fans because they actually have the data we just have what we can find.
Also, a lot of American artists used to perform on Korean music shows it was cool now it seems much more limited.
Global girl groups are girl groups marketed toward the global music market. XG is not marked toward the Korean music market they just promote on Korean music shows for more exposure. Vcha is marketed towards the US market which is supposed to make them a global group. Xg is marketed toward the global market. Vcha has already received backlash, people are very weird about who is allowed in K-Pop groups. Hence the "keep K-pop Korean" thing international fans have been pushing even though popular K-Pop groups include Thai, Japanese, and Chinese idols.

If the group comprise of native Koreans, I much prefer the Korean language (it’s beautiful). But I don’t mind English for those idols where English is their primary language. I think pronunciation is crucial…

We totally don't need pure English versions! Make a good original song or a good remix. I prefer the Korean and English mix.
IVE is one of the few 4th gen girl groups where a majority of their songs are in Korean, putting the K in kpop

2) VCHA - pop group inspire by kpop
3) XG - its kpop or just pop
4) BIBI - release two song : one in full korean another is full in English
5) There Korean singers only English song for Korean because of the lyrics become less cringe to them I guess
