    This breakfast doesnt comes from Hainan Island. BUT, it was originated from Hainanese in the South Asia (SG), where during the suffering era, most Hainanese here works with the English expat as housekeepers, on ships, western restaurant as kitchen helper or chef. That is where the Hainanese start to pick up this Western cooking skills... Han's, Jacks place, Killiney, Ya Kun, Nanyang, Boon Tong Kee are some examples that they are Hainanese owners, and some Senior Chef in some big names hotels are Hainanese too.. Chatterbox Chicken rice was created by a Senior Hainanese Chef from Mandarin Hotel..

    Hi Irene most the Hainanese worked for the British as chefs when Singapore was a British colony that why we have a tradition of eating toast for breadfast

      Hainanese in Hainan did not eat Angmo breakfast. They ate rice as breakfast like all Southerners. Like what you said, it was because they worked for the British and had adopted their employers' traditional breakfast and introduced it to the local Chinese firstly by setting up pushcart coffee stalls and later coffee shops.

    Hainanese migrants are mostly the last Chinese ethnic group to migrate to Singapore-Malaysia. When the Hainanese came, most of the 'good' jobs were already taken by the other Chinese migrants (Hokkiens, TeoChews ..) earlier. The only major employment were in the F&Bs, Hospitality, maids, helpers to the colonial British .. Thus, the F&B market in modern Singapore consists of alot of Hainanese. KouFu is Hainanese. KopiTiam is Not. KouFu Coffee & Tea definitely taste better than KopiTiam.
    As a relatively late-comers to Singapore, the Hainanese could only choose to work in the F&B and hospitality sectors as coffee stall holders, assistants, cook boys, bakers, barmen, and waiters.
    They also became seamen and domestic servants in wealthy European and Peranakan households. Well-versed in Western cooking, many worked as chefs on European ships.
    Some Hainanese eventually ventured into their own hotel and F&B businesses, establishing coffeeshops (kopitiam) and restaurants.

    Luckily you did this before the no dining out kicks in! I haven't gotten a chance to try most of these recommended ones. But I tried the Ah Seng at Amoy and quite liked their rich kopi and French toast with kaya. They toast the bread over charcoal, including the egg toast! Kaya is home made too. I prefer ya kun's steamed version as like u said their toast is too overly toasted and thin, not my kind of toast ("mo hao gam" like eating air🤣)
    Yes traditionally for brown kaya, how my hainan grandma did it was she would caramelised some sugar and stir into the pot towards the end.😋

      (1) Junlong Hakseang, don't get offended as we ourselves need to improve our English or else foreigners may misunderstand us. *Last time (the last time) = 上一次。You should say, "In the past" (以前).
      (2) Linus Hakseang,'eating outside' means to take your food to eat outside the house, such as if you have a garden or verandah. You should say, "eat out": "Let's eat out tomorrow" or "We can't eat out anymore". If you live (not 'stay') in an HDB flat, and you say to your Angmo visitor, "Shall we eat outside tonight?", he might think you're going to shift the dining table to the common corridor ...

      I tried some of Joy Luck stuff....over rated to me 😆 Tai Cheong is nice! Love their pandan version too. Irene should try their pandan tart! Only can get it in SG I think.

    some points to take note. most stalls now uses electric grill but there are some that still uses charcoal to grill the bread. do you prefer charcoal or electric or it doesn't matter? you might want to take that into consideration for a future kopi & toast review. I personally still go around the island searching for charcoal grilled toast, the taste is totally different.
    you might want to rename this video as "Where to find BEST Kopi & Toast in Singapore? 2021" as you will probably find new places in future. they are many you have yet to explore, these are just the famous ones you have visited.
    for eggs, you might want to judge how well it was cooked. a really skillful outlet will have egg whites that are done like custard and they formed an egg shape together with the yolk when you crack open the shell. others, they just become a pool of watery whites. do you know that only in singapore, the eggs are eaten with dark soy sauce 老抽? in malaysia, thailand, japan it is consumed with 生抽. my preference is 生抽, its the same principal as eating steamed fish with 生抽, you don't add 老抽 to steamed fish. just try with light soy sauce next time, you might like it instead.

    Try Killiney Kopitiam at 1 Killiney Road (next to Com-Centre), Somerset MRT. I prefer this to Ya-Kun.

    Try the NTUC FairPrice (or Glory brand) Hainanese Kaya with Honey. You will definitely like it! Not expensive $2.50-$2.80/jar.

      ....is OK for health??? Don't mistaken my comments, intake cholesterol is a need for our body regardless what types of cholesterol??? Even the doctor strongly recommend us not to take more than 5 eggs per day(2-4eggs.....I am not sure) for an adult.....If like what u say then just go ahead I JUST give my regards and caring concern to Irene that all.

      Its call killiney kopitiam and located at killiney rd. the original store. kaya paste is one of the best or the best. u can purchase their kaya paste but its quite expensive.

      马来人是回教徒不吃华人的炒米粉。一种早餐如果有一个新加坡民族不吃,就不能代表国民早餐。新加坡人的早餐多样化,除了烘麺包,还有椰浆饭,印度煎饼,没有一样可以代表国民早餐。
