Peonies growing experiment conclusion. AND, what's the price? And, a huge channel milestone!!

  • Most of the plants we grow and sell here are $7 a plant... we keep is simple. One price for pretty much everything we grow. But these peonies are different! They are a premium plant. I tried growing them two different ways: in pots and in the ground. Always trying to figure out what works best. So, the experiment has concluded and the results of the experiment are in! And, we settled on a price for the peonies. And, we reached a great milestone for the channel.

Very very nice to see your result, I live in Sweden for six months and the UK for 6 and as you will see on a world map Sweden it is pretty far north, so is UK but it has the full benefit of the warmth of the Gulf stream musch more so than Sweden especially me being on the east cost. Peonies do much much better int the freezing cold of Sweden they need it to set buds and be healthy they will survive and bloom even if you forget to plant them with soil perfectly it is not the cold it is the disturbance they do not like. IN the UK the garden country of the world they only really do ok in the mountains of Scotland were sufficient cold under freezing Celsius sets in for an extended time during winter the time of the freeze they need must be in a straight succession of days ( not one day minus then one day plus) they hate that as is the main problem for 85 & of the UK and Ireland they get sick, do not bloom and starts to diminish every year. This is true for the herbaceous peony while ITOH-hybrids and tree/bush peonies perform nicely in both countries. I hope this little bit of experience and info might be helpful for some, oh almost forgot plants-men has begun to use 3 species (herbaceous) not used in the history of peonies before from Ilands of the Mediterranean sea, they are much more heat tolerant to create hybrids for the Southern part of Europe, but it is a slow progress even more so now when ITOH-hybrids start getting a more of a fordable prize on the market.
Sorry guys/girls for my rambling and my written abuse of the English language thus far.

As someone who has grown peonies, planting them in the spring and then selling a full season /12 months is best. They don't generally bud up well when their roots are disturbed. If you can get them tricked into thinking it is the second season (2 springs) you get many more blooms. I think 19$ is a very fair price and they should sell quickly. Advertise them for Mother's day 🙂

I love these plants & have wondered about growing Peonies in pots, so thanks for this. I have several which were planted by the previous owners. They need to be divided, & they're too shaded there, though they still bloom. I also have a Tree Peony next to them, which would look great on my patio where I could see it. Now maybe I'll keep them all in pots.
I've read that once established, they don't like to be moved. I'd also read that they get set back when moved & might not bloom for 3 years after relocating, so I hesitated. After dormancy, in August is the ideal time to transplant them, but I don't know if I should fertilize them then, as they're dormant then, so Think I will just plant them in a fairly nutritious soil, mixed with some compost & aged manure.
One reason some peonies fail to grow is due to how the roots were planted. They must be planted horizontally, not vertically, & they don't like to be buried in soil. They can be seen growing on the surface, with about 2/3 of the root into the soil.

I bought a Pink Double Dandy Two Gallon Peony yesterday, at nursery in Lexington, KY, paid $40 dollars, and planted far away from my house foundation because peony draws ants (they exude a substance that ants find delicious), so if your peony is half that size, the 20.00 sounds right.

Please include your Zone in the description box so we know what 'overwinter' means for your plants. Zone 5 means snow on them and overcast days lasting 41 days at a stretch, with winds that take chill factors down to -10F. Good info but we can extrapolate better if all your videos state zone.
This is my first year for peonies (2023) and boy they weren't cheap! roughly $10 per 5-eye root for Asian tree style peonies. They were selected herbaceous and tree styles and two hybrids. I also experimented, starting Late February when snow was in patches and potting in an undrained dome lid black plastic box. Potting soil was mulch and sand with some compost/top soil added, with wood mulch sprinkled on top. I planted them extremely shallow, just under the surface since they already had 3/4 to 1 inch buds when they arrived in the mail. The plantings were very close - not the 12-16 inches recommended because what I wanted was root development first year more than flowers, altho flowers would be a bonus. The tubers were arranged tightly in the box like Tetra blocks, lightly covered with dirt with tubers still barely visible, then making up the darkness in wood mulch instead of dirt to avoid collar damp. I left them outside down to 19F with the dome cover on (since the buds were still under airy wood mulch) and if sunny, I popped the lid off so they wouldn't bake in there, or sit in total darkness 24/7. When buds broke mulch layer, I left the black dome off, used a BQ skewer punched to the bottom and 'stirred' to make 1/2 inch air channels to the bottom (since soil should have 30% oxygen access to complete the nitrogen cycle), and watered lightly with coffee pot water and dregs in the morning, or left under light snow to melt during the day. The result was soil always damp but never soggy or even 'moist' since lack of drain holes means higher risk of root rot if excess water can't evaporate. Winter watering is spare anyway because the plant isn't in a stage to deal with robust water uptake. The mulch kept the damp inside, absorbed the solar heat and seemed to keep them warm enough under the dome at night without freezing, yet cold enough for chill hours. When tubers broke mulch, I switched out the black dome for an overturned clear plastic container lid to act as a greenhouse for temps at night ~31F-43F April zone 5 northern mitt Michigan.
What I found - it still being April 2023 and the tubers planted just this previous February - that they seemed to like the closeness to each other, perhaps sharing nutrients and microorganism between themselves as some tuber plants do. They are now about 6 to 8 inches tall, healthy stalks. It won't be long before they're too tall for the clear plastic dome but it won't matter now that May is on the way and night temps are hovering more in the 40s than 30F. At some point, I may have to separate them into individual pots or in groups of three in 20 inch pots to flourish, but right now they're happy together just the way they are. What makes this spacing helpful is developing roots in such close proximity means garden space is reserved for something else until they get their 'legs'. Because hair roots that do the actual work of feeding a plant are mostly microscopic (and somewhat larger) and symbiotic with microorgs of the soil, moving them around, or stripping their ambient soil doesn't seem like a good idea to me, so I'll shovel and lift whole tubers with their soil blocks to their new location, perhaps with their neighbor along for the ride. What we do know is a mature lone tuber peony seems to be happiest when its canes are all bunched together, so closeness doesn't seem to be a problem for this flower anyway. Every once in awhile, I use the BQ skewer to twirl a few more air channels to the bottom so the soil remains soft and crumbly (and damp) when time comes to move them or separate them from their companions.
Right now, I want to see how long they thrive crowded since nobody seems to have a complaint at 8 inch growth, early Spring. But, like yourself, I'm just experimenting optimal conditions. I'll know more when they put out leaves if they're competing, and struggling. If so, they'll be soil amended and then later, moved to a forever home with its full root ball.
In another video on roots, best season for deciduous or die back perennial plant root development is FALL. All summer long, plants are collecting nutrients from photosynthesis from leaves and puts it in sap for transfer to roots. Fall is the time the ground is warmest (after all that summer sun), has an insulating blanket of fallen leaves to hold the heat and moisture down, and once leaves drop, plants are sending their sap to roots for dormancy. To accommodate summer sap, the roots develop underground to meet the demand for storage. So not much going on above ground, but roots stay busy during dormancy which is useful to know for growing tubers or bulbs of any kind. www. youtube. com/watch?v=OBlYpnvZK8g
In another article (I apologize for no source) experiments show tho underground, light is still a function of root development. Plants still like to see a ray or two even through snow. Total blackness - used in bareroot nurseries - contribute to complete dormancy for long term storage without any root development.

I have a had a peony in a very large 10+ gallon pot for 4-5 years It does okay, but I think it would do better in the ground. Prices for plants this year are very high, so I think your price is reasonable. I am struggling just to find the couple hostas at a decent price. Nurseries want $10 for basically a just potted liner here.

Kate--I don't know if you live near a Meijer's but I make the rounds and last week found several hosta varieties for $4.99 each. I live in Indiana, so there's sales tax. I bought one called Queen Josephine (since that's my name) and gave it to some friends who love to garden. The pots at Meijer's are about 3.5 inches square. The plants were a decent size, the leaves about 8 inches long! Happy gardening!

Hey. I’m glad the peonies did so well. But to be fair, your experience/advice is very specific to your region. I would seriously hesitate to keep them in pots in my 6b Ohio zone. Any colder than that, there’s a good chance they could die if not planted in the ground. My mother failed for years with them in pots in zone 8 TX. It’s just too hot and they shriveled away in pots. And the exact variety should dictate sales. If you have any rarer varieties, you should charge more, while more common varieties aren’t worth $20 IMO. And PLEASE, keep some in your own garden for a year or two. You’ll be cutting your own roots and doubling your income!

Yeah anything in pots needs to be watered frequently especially if they’re not planted in large enough pots. That TX sun was probably brutal. Some people have their pots on a drip system.

I have a Peony that was in a flower bed when I bought my house and land. How do they get the tubers? Do you just dig down and cut a piece of the “root” or tuber or rizome (sp?)? 🤔

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Рік тому

The tuber is the root. Just dig it up and divide it. I wouldn't advise doing that when it's really hot.

@@savvydirtfarmer I thought so because I have done that with other plants with that type of root. And I have tried to relocate one plant species but it keeps coming up if I don’t get all of the root. I don’t know the name for sure. I call it a Yucca but I might be wrong. It has sharp leaves shaped like a dagger that all come from a central point and a needle-like tip and it gets a tall flower several feet tall with a cluster of bell shaped flowers that dangle on top. If you can imagine what I am talking about!?! 😂
But I appreciate you answering and I watched several of your videos and I am going to watch many more. I am planning to give it a try starting with a small scale nursery and see how it goes. I have a limited water supply though and I already have a considerable vegetable garden so I have to address it first. 👍

Probably correct. That was part of digging them before dormant, so they could root into their new pots and hopefully settle in well before winter. I think that did work, but they still couldn't completely overcome being transplanted.

Adleman Peonies has some videos on how to plant peonies. They sell from their acreage. Carol Adleman (maybe it's Adelman) is a mature lady with decades of experience. She says some peonies are 90-100 years old. I bought a couple of Hawaiian Corals from her 3 years ago. Very healthy bare roots with several eyes came from Oregon to Indiana in beautiful condition.
