Wow, great video!!! 3 years from seed, that's incredible. You also made a comment that the winter or cold season helps them grow. It made me think of people & how we all go through our "winters," and if we think we're going backward because nothing is happening "above the surface," we're actually still growing. And some people take longer than others to flower. Clarissa Pi kola talks about that in "the Late Bloomer." Amazing how you broke this all down into steps!
I have been trying to grow peonies from seed for probably 2 years. Nothing has worked. I found your video and tried the soil in the bag with seeds after scarification and it worked!! I almost fell out on the floor I couldn’t believe one had sprouted!! Thank you so much for your video!!
wow, if I had not heard you mention about how the peony seed makes roots without leaves fo that first year, I would have thought no germination took place and then go digging through the area I planted to see what's up. Thanks for that bit of info!
I love the detail you gave! Really helpful! I had some peonies in my wedding bouquet so I wanted to see if I could eventually plant them and have them forever♡
It took 5 years for our peony to develop ots first flower. My toodler knocked it off with a stick before it bloomed 😢. Two years on and we have 7 blooming flowers!
Thank you so much for this great video. I have some beautiful peonies I’d like to share with my friends. I sure hope it doesn’t take six years. My best friend is 90.
Thank you so much for your video!! I've learned a lot! I tried the baggy and wet napkin, but I placed it in a paper bag. It took almost 3 months to germinate. Then I planted them. I don't have a "green thumb" at all! I was and still probably will dig up a seed to see if I killed it off or "hoping" they are doing well still. I didn't know about the rest nor did I know it took so long for the little buggers to grow up. The only reason I am trying so hard is that my boyfriend and I are taking care of his 95 year old father. My boyfriend's daughter lost her grandmother years ago and always comes here to pick peonies to put on her grave. The property will be in question when her grandfather passes. So I had the idea to gather seeds from the peonies and save some seeds while also growing a few to give to her on her birthday so that she can have some on her grandmother's peonies on her own property whether her grandfather's property is sold off or stays in the family. So I'll put some more seeds in a baggy and leave in the light while preforming the rest of your directions. Thank you for your video and time!!
I would love to grow different kinds of peonies and thank you for sharing, it has given me an hour ideas how to grow from seeds as I have gathered my seedlings from a pink perfume peonies....
Great video!! Thank you, I’m a fairly new gardener but I have done well with growing several varieties of peony in my yard and would like to try to grow some of them from seed so this was very helpful 😊
Hello Beautiful Medicine - do you have the tree peony or the herbaceous peony? I recently moved and found two peony trees that bloomed beautifully and have plenty of seed pods so I’m going to try growing some from seed. Love that you have had success growing peonies and welcome any tips or suggestions 😊!
@@melissab3038 I have both tree and herbaceous. I haven’t grown them from seed yet because I have enough in my yard to divide. I am interested in growing from seed to give/sell
Thank you, sir My grand mum loved them but we had only two bushes of them. I did not know much About flowers and was not that interessted. Not only In the memory of my grandma, i did not know that peonies Have some historical value, i would like to multiply peonies we Have. It is end of septembar now. I am not sure if i can be sucessfull with seeds but hope at least with roots.
Thank you very much for mentioning that you do your "Pots outside " method in Zone 5, because I would have thought they would freeze solid ove rthe winter.
I stumbled up on your channel while searching for canadian gardeners and i loved the way you explain about the process. I had to subscribe here Can you please do a video about various perrennial flower plants that are suitable for Onatrio weather, like maybe your top 15 or 20 varieties you had a great success with. Some day - too many topics. But here is a list of some of my favorite perennials: www.gardenfundamentals.com/favorite-plants/ They are all grown in my garden - zone 5.
Thank you for your great video..2 questions, at what age will tree peonies start producing seed pods? Is there anything in the spent flower pods that can be used? Thanks for your answers, Rod
Thank you so much for your informative video. I am a beginner in gardening. Cut the seed pod yesterday. Guess cut too early after watching your video today. Does that mean it's useless? Is there anything we can do to save it? Thank you!
I just got given some seeds from a friend which is recently picked. As it's mid Oct now, should I just put them in the fridge or should keep them at room temperature with your paper towel method?
How do you know the seeds are ready for the next step of adding soil to the bag and kept in refrigerator? Will they have any root buds at all? What if they do not? Would that indicate they are not going to germinate? Thanks!!
Hello! I’ve tried the baggy method with my tree peony seeds twice now, but they start to mold after a week or so! I’ve been careful not to add too much water/moisture. I’ve also changed the bags/paper towel if they’re getting moldy. Any suggestions for what I’m doing wrong?
Hi, thank you for your video. I am just wondering if by doing the bag and fridge method, are you compressing the 2 winter cycle normally required so that you can have sprouted (with leaves) in the first spring after collecting the seeds?
That is part of the goal. The problem is peonies seem to germinate whenever they feel like it. But you can skip the winter, by a few weeks in the fridge.
I have Paeonia Rockii its about 12 years old (Victoria, BC, Canada). and I cant seem to get the tree to propagate. When should i open the seed pods and start the germination process?
They will open on their own and reveal the red inside along with the dark blue seeds. Once you see a crack - harvest. The small red things are not viable seeds.
I really love your explanation. I really want to plant start from seed but I live in Indonesia (tropical country) can I follow your step to plant the peony from seed? I live at Bandung (one of the cities in Indonesia) which has a lower temperature than other parts of Indonesia
The seeds my peonies made are very small. They look nothing like the ones in this video. The pods have opened. Which I had surrounded by a fine mesh bag that pearl onions come in. We scraped the seeds from the pods, but they are just a millimeter or two in size. Have you seen this before, and if so what us the cause? We have had these peonies for over 5 years.
Yes you can most likely grow from seed but man that will take even longer than getting a bare root which might still take a couple yrs to see a flower. On established plants you can divide and transplant so they say havent done that yet on peony.
It appears the actual seed leaves cannot escape the hardcoat of the Seed, even to the point where it must grow from outside of Seed itself. ....like Humans, it requires a Remedy to be Born! :)

They can make seeds as soon as they flower. Many seed pods just have shriveled undeveloped seeds - they can't be used.
Thank you for making this video!
Wonderfull everything I wanted to learn you explained. Thank you. when the seeds drop in soil would they grow by themselves by any chance?
Yes they do.

Just leave it sit - the seeds may develop properly, depending on how green the pod was.

Can you please share a video on peony seed cross pollination , to create varieties like pastelegance! Thank you in advance
It stays relatively cool inside our house 60-65°F (it's December). For the initial baggy phase should I try and put them someplace warmer?
Yes - they will germinate cooler, but it will take longer.
Excellent!!!!

So appreciate your details...I've got plenty of seeds in the plastic bag...but how do I keep the paper towel moist over time??
Thankyou for the information ♡
Have you ever grown fernleaf peonies from seed? Or just at all? Thanks! Very helpful video.
I have not - mine don't make seed. But if you get seed they would germinate the same as other peonies

Should the bags be sealed or left open during germination?
I just put the seeds in the soil and water. Most of them come up in 1 year. My yard is full of plants.
Hi Can I ask when you put the seeds in the soil & how long it took to grow flowers? I live in upstate NY Thank you so much ☺️
If you have other verities of peonies near by for pollenating wouldn't you get a better selection of hybrid of seeds?
Can I germinate the seeds in the spring say April .and just follow your methods?
You can start them any time - they will germinate when they are ready.
Hii is it possible for me to grow Peonies in a tropical country that has no snow/winter?

provided you give it a cool treatment after the root shows, I see no reason why it would not work.
Do peonies come true from seed? Or do they naturally hybridize like apples do?
Depends. If both parents are a species, they come true. Like all seeds, when parents are not the same species - they don't.
Wonderful information, can grow and get flower in zone 8
Is there a way you could send/ sell me some peony tree seeds...I have a dark pink one now...would love to have multiple colors though
Do you have to add water to keep the paper towel wet in the plastic bag?
Yes - from time to time.
Can peony grow in tropical country?
HI, seeds got mold. What should I do please?
If they get moldy, they were probably not viable - start again.
Those are probably not developed properly. Good seed is quite round and larger than most plants.
Yes you can most likely grow from seed but man that will take even longer than getting a bare root which might still take a couple yrs to see a flower. On established plants you can divide and transplant so they say havent done that yet on peony.
