    Video: High Beam - www.hitthehighbeam.com
    Music: Mills Brothers, with Louis Armstrong - "In The Shade of the Old Apple Tree" courtesy of JSP Records
    APPLE CIDER RECIPE
    INGREDIENTS:
    - 6 Granny Smith Apples
    - 6 Red Delicious Apples
    - 1 Valencia Orange
    - 1 Cup Brown Sugar
    - 1 Whole Nutmeg, finely chopped
    - 4 Whole Cinnamon Sticks, halved.
    - 1 Tbs Cloves
    DIRECTIONS
    - Wash apples and oranges and cut into quarters.
    - Add to a large stockpot along with the brown sugar.
    - Lay your nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves into a cheesecloth, and tie into a satchel.
    - Fill your stockpot with enough water to cover the fruit, and add your spice satchel.
    - Bring water to a boil, let your mixture boil for at least one hour to let the fruit soften.
    - Mash your softened fruit, reduce heat, and simmer for 2 additional hours.
    - Allow the pot to cool completely, and remove your spice satchel.
    - Line a large bowl with a doubled cheesecloth, and add the contents of the stockpot.
    - Twist and squeeze the cheesecloth to get as much juice as you can.
    - Drink cool or reheat, just make sure you rummage through some leaves afterwards :)

    I tried out this recipe for myself, here are my thoughts:
    Overall, not bad. Definitely an easy recipe to follow, and the perfect Sunday activity :) Notes are 1. I have no idea what kind of excaliber-lightsaber hybrid knife they used to chop that nutmeg, but I had absolutely no such luck. Many pieces turned into dangerous projectiles when cut. Next time, I'm just gonna grate in some fresh nutmeg to the stock. 2. When they say to "let cool", don't be impatient. Squeezing molten hot apple pulp from cheesecloth? Not fun.
    As far as taste goes, don't go into this thinking it'll taste as frickin' amazing as apple cider from the farm will, but it's definitely still tasty. Awesome fall recipe to try, if you have a couple of free hours.

      I really want to try this recipe out, maybe serve it at Thanksgiving dinner this year. From your experience, how much does this recipe yield?

      "apple cider from the farm"
      How does that compare to the stuff from the store? I like that stuff.

    • @Smiles1057
      @Smiles1057 9 років тому +8

      Isabel Melendez I didn't really pay attention, but I would say a good 8 mugs worth. Very good idea for Thanksgiving :)
      DY Y It's not as sweet, which would mean it's healthier, but we all have a sweet tooth.

      The hybrid knife is a chefs knife. I don't understand why you would call it a hybrid knife? I think that would be 10-15 tops of chopping, prepping and grating, NOT a couple of free hours

      Just don’t forget to remove the seeds first. They contain cyanide.

    • @mstreefern
      @mstreefern 2 роки тому +3

      @@wardrobelion Apple seeds contain cyanide - NOT a fraction more Arsenic than any other fruit would contain and there is a BIG difference between the two! Arsenic is an element that can accumulate in your tissues so even tiny amounts are a bad idea. Cyanide breaks down into carbon and nitrogen and is only poisonous if consumed in significant amounts at one shot.

    I made cider similar to this last year and it was an awesome base for Apple pie moonshine! It wasn't actual moonshine, but we blended the apple cider with apple juice and then high proof grain alcohol. A nice sipping treat on fall nights. Great video, can't wait to get more apples this year and try it again!

    I loosely followed this recipe last night, using 4tbs cinnamon, 2tbs nutmeg, and 1tbs clove. Ground spices were what I had on hand, so thats what I ended up using. I also used 1/2 cup extra brown sugar because my sweet tooth. The cinnamon flavor was a bit more than I would like, but not bad at all. My batch made a very strong half gallon that I think I can add water to with out killing the flavor. I'll test that with a small glass before I do the whole thing. The smell in the house is wonderful!

    For all the people asking "is this alcoholic" or saying "how is this cider without alcohol" this is basically a virgin apple cider which means its non-alcoholic, although to most american people this is how apple cider normally is supposed to be, where i live in California ive seen it flat(not carbonated) and carbonated but never alcoholic.

      its just apple cider. when its fermented, it becomes a hard cider. that is how we differentiate it in New England.

  • @VoxAndBass3592
    @VoxAndBass3592 11 років тому +1

    To be honest, I've made cider before (admittedly not using this recipe) and you get so little actual cider out of the apples that you really don't need to worry about it keeping. But yeah, I'd imagine if you kept it in a sealed container in the fridge, it would keep for quite a while. Regardless, you'd have to worry more about it fermenting than spoiling.

    What I do to make cider is I peel and core apples. Then put apples in a pan with apple juice (you need enough to where there will be extra after the apples cook) and ground cinnamon. ( I recommend using a lid while it's cooking so you steam less liquid). Once the apples are all cooked, pour into a bowl with a strainer on it. You will then have soft apples you can eat regular or put in a pie. The cider is great hot or cold.
