- The 2009 Champions League Final was a clash of titans, as reigning champions Manchester United, led by Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, faced a Barcelona side determined to conquer Europe. United had one of the strongest teams in the world, featuring the likes of Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, and Nemanja Vidić, and were aiming to become the first club to retain the Champions League title in the modern era. Barcelona, under Pep Guardiola’s revolution, had already won La Liga and the Copa del Rey, but this match was their ultimate test. The world watched as two footballing powerhouses collided in Rome, a game that would define an era.
Amidst the battle of superstars, Lionel Messi delivered a performance that truly set him apart. Playing in a false nine role, he dictated Barcelona’s attack with his dribbling, movement, and vision, evading United’s defenders with ease. His crowning moment came in the 70th minute when Xavi delivered a pinpoint cross into the box. Despite his small stature, Messi rose above Rio Ferdinand and Vidić to head the ball past Edwin van der Sar, sealing Barcelona’s 2-0 victory. It was a goal that defied logic-a player of Messi’s height scoring a towering header in the biggest match of his career. His celebration, arms wide open in sheer joy, became one of the most iconic images in football history.
This victory cemented Barcelona’s first-ever treble, a feat never achieved by a Spanish club before. More importantly, it marked the moment Messi ascended to the top of world football. His dazzling performances throughout the season, capped off by his goal and masterclass in the final, won him his first Ballon d’Or, officially crowning him the best player in the world. It was the beginning of a new era-an era where Messi would reign supreme, redefining the game for years to come.

8:34 that moment ❤🎉
Another huge final where Ronaldo went missing. Leo outplayed Ronaldo in every huge encounter they ever had....
Ronaldo was in Madrid in 2009
@@armanmansuri5723Ronaldo lost ucl final against Messi
@@armanmansuri5723You can literally see him in the pitch man
Did u even see the match lmao@@armanmansuri5723
You can see him on 6:36 watching Messi's goal. This was his last game for Man Utd until his return in 2021.
Messi sank Manchester United Twice on Champions League final, and since then MU was never the same again till now. Ronaldo said he is the most complete player, he can kick, head and score goals. But here what he talked was a bullshit. Messi scored a brilliant goal through a heading, something which Ronaldo claimed was one of his best skills. CR7 is such a boastful one, but Messi proves he is more powerful and the most decorated player of all. But Messi never claims he is the BEST. Coz he knows football is a team sport. Above all, Messi truly plays the FOOTBALL. His visions, assists, goals, dribbles are incredible things which Messi used to rule kingdom of football since he was a kid. While Cristiano only thinks about goals. Messi is younger and he proves he is better than the older one.
Messi became best when he debuted bro
I don't know how this Barcelona team ever lost a game with Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Henry, Eto'o, Busquets, and Puyol. I feel like I'm leaving someone out too😂
Dani Alves, Abidal/Alba, Pique, Fabregas, Toure etc. So much depth over the Guardiola era.
Barcelona dream team ...
I mena. No team will win every game right? Doesn't matter how strong the team is. Sometimes opposition team wins by luck also
@@rifathlittller_169 like Celtic - Barcelona in 2012 😂😂
@SombreroFlicks
True lol
The GOAT🐐🐐
Pelé
@@ananaszu6988 overrated.
he was the best players the moment he started in BARCA..ever..
In the starting that guy said maradona is more like a leader and played in midfield. Well guess what . Messi exactly became like that kind of player as he aged
That was Ruud Gullit, a Dutch legend. Remember that this was back in 2009, it was Messi's first year being the main man in Barcelona. Before this game he had yet to prove he can perform in big games.
Great video.....
THE GOATTTT
It’s so frustrating that on every one of the many replays of that header starting at 6:00ish, they change the camera angle like 4 times, so you can’t get a real sense of how it happened.
Messi is beyond spectacular. He has been the best player in the world for many years. But if you go by who can do things with the ball that no body else can do then that goes to maradona. He is miles ahead.
I'd rather have Messi's numbers than Maradona's circus tricks
Messi has done things on the pitch that no one can do as well.

Penaldo standing like a clown
All these English commentators make big deal about scoring against English teams. But Actually in reality, their league is the crappiest and their teams are the easiest to score against 😂😂
Until 2012 PL teams were at the top, Man Utd and Chelsea were absolute powerhouses and Wenger's Arsenal & Gerrard's Liverpool were never to be underestimated. In the 2009 UCL 3 out of 4 teams in the Semis were English (Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea).
We all can agree that Messi didn't surpass Maradona, right? Maradona and Pelé are just on another level where no one can't even come close.
Pele Mardonna are overated players of all time
they're on the same pedestal even though maradona at his best was better than anyone has ever been
have you even watched maradona play? messi is by far one if not the greatest player to ever play the sport
Messi is clear of everyone else, no one comes close.
Messi has cleared everyone. He was being regarded as one of the best ever in 2009. In 2011, people were saying he's the best ever. You mean to tell me 16 years later, after all the achievements, he hasn't surpassed them all? Laughable. Just watch the man play and you'd have an answer to your question. Then if you take into account all the stats and silverware, there's none better.
