Due to its highly complex nature and sheer number of parameters, this has been among the most challenging virtual instruments Cherry Audio has ever created. We’ve painstakingly emulated every aspect with exacting precision while making the sound programming experience more intuitive with easy-to-use pop-up menus and informative real-time display directly built into the parameter buttons. Topping it off, switching the standard single instrument mode to double mode adds a Chroma Expander - an entire additional Chroma Synthesizer that can run in layer or split modes!

As a former sound designer for Fender UK in the 1980s and an expert user of the Chroma, I can honestly say that I'm delighted with what Mitchell and the team have done.
Most importantly of all, the Cherry Chroma sounds exactly like a hardware Chroma. That's first and foremost what I was wishing for. I used to say that nothing else sounds like a Chroma, but now I can say that the Cherry Chroma and the Rhodes Chroma have that sound. Wonderful!!!
It has at least some of the enhancements I'd have wished for and the user interface is faithful to the original yet much easier to use by making the parameter buttons reveal their menus with clicking and sliding.
I'm working away from home for a few weeks so it will be some time before I can delve more deeply into it, but I'm thrilled with what Cherry Audio has achieved.
Brilliant!!!
As someone that never had the chance to touch a Chroma (well, briefly touched one at a NAMM show), and never expecting to play or program one, I am ecstatic!
It's also gratifying to see someone with experience and credibility endorse the product, so thank you Paul!
that explains why you are so bitter about the chroma console, even though it has nothing to do with the fender chroma and chroma is just a word that any product can use
@@eternalsence3033 I'm not "bitter", I just think they should have chosen a name that hadn't already been used.
As someone who owned an original (purchased 1983) for 20 or so years, I've been waiting for a plugin version to arrive! Fantatastic.
HOME RUN!!!!!! HARD WORKERS AT CHERRY AUDIO PUT IN THE WORK!!!
Annnnnnnd Cherry Audio reaches into my wallet AGAIN. They're making incredible synths faster than I can refill it!
No shade on the GX80, but I think this is the flagship of CA's emulations, and a wonderful achievement. Bravo!!! But, I did find myself pulling out ye olde Chroma Parameter Chart to help get reoriented. 😁
Congratulations! This is the synth emulation I was looking forward to the most because I was so curious about the original. I bet there are people at a certain company that begins with "A" cursing you under their breath as they stare at their pre-alpha build they have been working on for at least 5 years. (Pure speculation on my part.).
I hope so, they need knocking down a peg or two 😅
A very impressive job, a great introductory video, and a fantastically low price!
I always wanted to own a Chroma and thought that I'd go to my grave without it, but the Software Engineers at Cherry Audio made my dream come true!
Many thanks!
As someone who has only had a chance to play the Original Chroma on seldom occasions many years ago, this machine has been on my wish list for many, many years. Thanks for all of your painstaking work on this. Insta-buy!!
Just demoing it. It'll be a learning curve, for sure, but what a phenomenal achievement all at C.A! Amazing work! It sounds absolutely GLORIOUS!!! :)
Thank you, this vid is really helpful to skip reading manuals. I haven’t even turned on my pc after the installing, but I know I can operate Chroma nicely next time I use it. Kudos to filter/resonance which is convincing.
Ohhhh my! I was literally looking for an emulation for this yesterday and then this video pops up. Thank you!!
YES!!!! Herbie Hancock fan favourite!! Instant purchase!
Looks gorgeous. Sounds the business.
Admittedly, before wednesday I had never heard of the Rhodes Chroma, and I really try not to accumulate too much gear/VSTs, but I did download the demo yesterday, and it kept me fascinated for hours. It's surprisingly easy to make some tweaks to a preset and hit so many sweet spots. I really really like it, and will most likely buy it. One of the fun things I discovered is you can set a different pitch bend range for the synth and for the expander, and use the pitchbend wheel to create different chords; I have never seen this on any other synth. Really nice!
Thank you for making this video. Great to get a run-thru directly from the creators!
Congrats guys! Looks and sounds fantastic.
Fantastic
Maybe do a Chroma Polaris in the near future, to keep this one company? 🙂
Bravo !!! :)
This must've been pretty difficult to emulate correctly. Nice Cherry
As usual a masterpiece of an emulation. I never played a Chroma so I cannot tell, but experts here seem to agree. What about Tim's review?
Tim will be back in the future! But we felt this video would be best handled by our own Mitchell Sigman as he was the designer. It was his approach that took what was so complex about the original and made it more accessible for this virtual instrument.
@@CherryAudiovst This vid carried a lot of information so it's hugely appreciated. Obviously I think I will buy this virtual instrument too (as all the others by Cherry Audio)
Congrats, 🍒 Cherry Audio on another big and interesting (a.k.a., a bit challenging) synth offering. It is one that I intend to add to the box of chocolate cherries of course.
A few things regarding the “intro video” though to be taken constructively …
1. This video recording suffered from camera shot flutter between two different sources. For example demo on physical Chrome fluttered with virtual Chroma in several segments.
2. A bit more unsettling was that the type for different things including guidance dialogs appears to be out of focus which was a bit frustrating when I thought I needed my reading glasses and found out it was the actual video slightly defocused. It makes things hard to read when shifting between things.
Those were the techie things. On the Implementation side, I found the CA implementation of complex settings to be very helpful. I think I would have gone bonkers with a chart and physical Chroma. There are some questions though that I had about the UI/UE. If only working with one signal path, it would seem ideal to actually “gray out” the other volume control so that it is more obvious that it is disabled. This is just a minor thing that I think could enhance the user experience and could be applicable to anything where things get disabled with settings. Just my take and definitely not a critical thing; but, a “maybe” on the next revision. I am afraid though, that my non-familiarity with Chroma would make any further suggestions obtuse so I will save that for later when I have had the time to tinker with Chroma and understand it more than I do now.
As always, I personally find it to be extremely incredible that the Cherry Audio Team can crank out a new synth offering so darned quickly. Not to knock them; but, CA’s rate of rolling out virtual synths is much higher than Arturia which I was use to before settling into nirvana with Cherry Audio three years ago. Great talent there as well as commitments and we all love the surprise UA-cam teasers before these roll out on the bit-boggling assembly line.
NICE JOB, EVERYONE‼️
Thank you for the valuable feedback on both the video and Chroma itself! Like the synth, there were some technical challenges, but we hope it will get users up and running with this unique UI.
I own an original Chroma Polaris with a newly installed membrane control surface. I would definitely purchase a model of it as I'd be familiar with it's GUI. FYI - UVI has a sample-based version in their vintage vault which is my favorite synth in their sample collection.
Wow!
Excellent!! Brilliant!👍👋👋👋🎹😊 Thank you!🙏
Stellar!
this is amazing...
called it!
I was waiting for this!
Even if you can find one and keep it maintained, it seems like a pain to use. But very cool having a Chroma in VSTi format. 👍👍
Thanks!!
I have the UVI Vintage Vault which has Chroma included but Cherry Audio is so good, it’s still very tempting to click the purchase button.
Go on push the purchase button you know you want to !!
The Cherry Chroma is a million times better than the badly sampled Uvi one. You'll love the Cherry Chroma.
@@paulgrooveside2803 I love all things Cherry Audio.
Kroma is good. Still getting it but, starting to have the same synths from arturia, cherry, uvi
@@stephenroldan5107 same for me.
Did i see a subtle clue you are working on a prophet plugin?? Yes please!! 🙏
If you mean the Prophet-10 I'm playing, I've had my P-10 rev4 since it was released, and I've had a vintage P-5 for over 15 years before. It also acts as my MIDI controller when I don't want to pound on the (heavy) KeyLab 88... so no hidden clue. :)
I do get the overlay design to make it look like an original Chroma, but honestly, since it is a software recreation, why not have a more user friendly "edit mode" screen where people have each function/parameter layed out with a knob or fader so it was a little more intuitive to edit and easier to figure out what you may want to assign to eg a cc control for hands on editing to whatever hardware you have, able to send cc's and other midi controls. I don't get why you would make a recreation without a serious better ui. It's like creating a DX7 emulation without making a direct hands on edit function of each function/parameter hidden behind the horrible buttons of the original. Apart from that, this looks like a winner. Personly never tried playing the original but know it was actually quite advanced for its time and had a really nice sound.
Dan - at 8:27 where Audio output is only on "A" and B is silent or useless, why not gray out B altogether vs. making it available?
So the next secret synth from Cherry audio will be Polaris??!.
Hope so.
No MPE support?
Uvi, just took out more stuff for this. Well see
Uh, whats the diffrence between this and uvi
UVI's instrument is based on samples. This is a virtual synthesizer that is modeled so precisely that it can import patches from the Rhodes Chroma
This looks awesome! Take my money. :)
A quick wish list for improvements:
1. A way of auto-selecting the filter kb track so it's in tune, rather than faffing about tuning it, which I think is taking realism too far :)
2. Not a big fan of dropdowns because of the constant back and forth and clicking twice. Is there any way to change selections without using them? Double clicking, perhaps? Or have arrows above and below each keypad so we could spin them up and down...
Can I just set my bank account to auto pay when a new synth is released? 'Cause...
So its just the chroma arp polaris mixed together in on synth vst, just like the gx80 ??.
No, not at all. This is strictly based on the Rhodes Chroma, which started at ARP. Hear more of the story at ua-cam.com/video/DBQmoWosE7g/v-deo.html
dosent matter, i did try the demo, and its right up my alley, its perfect, i will buy it tommorow.
Does anyone happen to know, which synth they used in heman movie (1987), cosmic key sound ?, i know its a chroma something but which one, chroma or chroma polaris ??.
@@henrik3657 the Polaris was used on screen in the He-Man movie. I don't know if it's on the soundtrack but it's definitely featured on screen.
It breaks my heart every time to watch it going up in flames when Skeletor attacks. 💔
ha ha,😂😂😃
Dam.n Skeletor, he has no respect for music😂.
Actually, i did some research and the Chroma arp and polaris is "very alike", when it comes to the sound, osc / filters, etc, atleast that what the internet says, not me!.
Allso , Cherry audio has included the expander, so there is plenty of options to play around with.
Offcourse, i didnt want cherry audio chroma arp, just for the heman sound, but more , because i know both chroma arp and can make very unique sounds, which other synth cant do, i think.
Now i just downloaded the demo, and after 30 minuttes, after playing around with the cherry audio chroma arp, i bought it right away.
Great synth.
I have no idea how to program / create chroma arp patches yet.
Demo download stops at 70% for me.
If you’re using Sync, please see this support article cherryaudio.kayako.com/article/699-how-do-i-get-sync-to-install-a-product-if-it-s-getting-stuck-in-the-process
@@CherryAudiovst Thanks, manually deleting cache folder helped.
With so much space used on the screen WHY do you have to switch between A and B? This is for me a no-no.
You could have just put both A and B on the screen with making 4 rows instead of 2.
That would've made it impractically tall when in Double Chroma+Expander mode. And honestly, it's always a very fine line we have to tread between changing things and keeping it looking like the original instrument we're emulating.
