As usual. It wasn't planned to buy in my brain, but Tim and Cherry Audio made me change opinion. This is a very clever way to simulate a drum machine. At this point we all need similar replicas of TR727 or 808 and Linn!
The CR-78 has a cameo appearance in the 1982 film “Liquid Sky” - one of the characters holds it under her arm as she sings “Me And My Rhythm Box” in a NYC nightclub.
Nice video. The first song from Joe Jackson "Stepping out" was actually recorded with the Korg KR-55 drummachine. It sounds somewhat similar to the CR-78, but not quite the same.
Oh this sounds great! Thought that first track was AHA Take on me till you played chords! Great demo, definite buy for me , like how easy ut is to add variation
Ohh I love this 😍 By the way, Sade's "War of the Hearts" is also a possible candidate for the list, I think it uses the same pattern as "Same Old Scene", just slower
Very punchy! Cherry kills again. I like my analog Cyclone TT-78, which isn’t an exact replica, it also has controls for editing the sounds and it sounds slightly different than the original 78 and this one; a bit tougher/more rugged. So really, I’d probably use them both, for different things. May need to pick this up.
"Steppin' Out" by Joe Jackson was a Korg Rhythm 55 (KR-55) drum machine and is pictured (along with all the other equipment used on the album) on Night & Day inner gatefold. Also, The Cars' used a CR-78 on "Double Life" on Candy-O not "Shoo Be Do".
The multy key pressing was very common back in the days on organs. You could do this on most rhythm machines. Just depended on how many fingers you were able to manage to get over 2 or more buttons. Not always gave something usefull, but actually quite cool. This is such a nice plugin since it done "right" with circuit emulation instead of just samples. Would be fun to see coupled with a simple old school "Auto accomp." with some old school analog bass and rhytmic instruments.
This is awesome!! I love the sounds of the original CR-78 and frankly the samples Ive found have been underwhelming and dont have this kind of versatility. Cant wait to try this!
Great video as usual, after the funny hoax teaser! The Plug-in is magnificent! The stand alone mode is a must, as always! Go Cherry Audio!!! Greetings from Madrid City Spain!
Just to add that a number of artists used that same rumba rhythm as on the Blondie song. Gary Numan (definitely on Remind Me To Smile from Telekon), and more than once, I think. Roxy Music - which you then featured! The original lineup Ultravox! (with the exclamation mark, before Midge Ure joined) might have as well. It's a great, iconic rhythm (I've used it in my own amateur stuff), and really feels "1980s", but can comfortably support a variety of musical styles. Not sure whether the artists all used the CR78. I assume not! Great piece of kit. I don't use a DAW (I'm old fashioned and still use hardware for recording), but as I always wanted a CR78 but couldn't afford one, I assume I could use this virtual drum machine to create a drum track, and then record it into a couple of tracks on my digital recorder. :-)
I have a cr78 I got on eBay for about $800 in nice good condition... I wish it had a built in midi to it to sync it to my synths.. now I gotta mod it. Great drum machine
Really great run through. At last I can get my favourite drum machine. Was hoping Behringer would produce a hardware version. But cherry have probably destroyed their sales. It's easier and better than any hardware. My only thoughts I would have preferred a matrix grid for editting. Great idea for the instant midi export. Something that is perfect for Ableton.
Great intro to the instrument. Thanks. You forgot a very important purveyor of the drum boxes, one who definitely used the more than one pattern at a time concept, and also manipulated one live : Sly Stone! Was probably a unit before the 78, but definitely the same ideas and sounds
Wow wow. These are the best genres in the world, before Y2k, RnB and 90's house techno and amen breaks took over, imo. But this, this era and iconicness is is the best (one of the best). Would love for Adele to do this type of music, I like this more than rock and country or even RnB. This, this is just iconic, these rhythm genres, these tempos, the drum tracks.
Demo does seem fun so far. Maybe I’m missing something, but I wish Cherry would include init patches in their software. Once you start making changes there doesn’t seem to be a way to get back to the default, freshly installed “factory” settings (unless you remember to create your own init preset).
@@blueeyedsoulman I never said is wasn’t. I was commenting on the songs he was playing that we were supposed to be guessing. But thanks for clarifying that.

Just had an iconic question about setting the tempo on this iconic software drum machine. Is there a way to set the tempo via digital readout on this iconic machine or are we stuck with that big analog "Tempo" button only? For example, the tempo for that iconic fourth song, written by that super iconic recording artist, should be @ an iconic 95bpm. How can you be sure you're set at that iconic 95bpm for that super, super iconic song? Thanks!
The Host Sync switch locks to the same tempo as your DAW. Otherwise (Host Sync off), dial it in on the Tempo knob or double-click it to enter the precise BPM
14:41 such a shame that Cherry Audio did not make the contrast between bar 2 and bar 3 higher contrast. People with color vision deficiency, like me, have a hard time distinguishing the colors of bar 2 and bar 3. It would be such a small change, and would have made the interface much more accessible. The plugin looks amazing otherwise, looks like a lot of fun!
Hope I'm understanding your question correctly... any sound/mixer/effects edits "stick" as you change patterns with the front panel factory and user beats, but there isn't a way to globally edit or lock sounds when you change presets using the main preset browser (purple strip at the top).
@@CherryAudiovst Great, i bought it yesterday - but i cannot for the life of me figure out how to actually record any audio (or midi) out of the plugins interface, it is driving me insane, how do i acually press start on a beat and just get that from the plugin in the DAW to the tracks???? im ready to give up - i dont want to use any digital or physical routing, there must be a way to output it cleanly in the DAW surely?
@@DanielS10291 that's a function of which DAW you are using, but you may find some help in the online user guide: docs.cherryaudio.com/cherry-audio/instruments/cr-78/getting-started . See the specific sections on "Using CR-78 Multi-Out Version" and "Using CR-78 as a DAW MIDI Sound Module." If you need more assistance, feel free to drop our Support team a line, and let them know which DAW you're using
Just to check - as Tim said he couldn't quite match the rhythm on the final song, are the preset patterns actually identical to the Roland ones, or have some or all of them been altered very slightly to avoid copyright issues?
The factory “button” preset patterns are absolutely matched to the hardware, but keep in mind that some songs may have used the WS-1 accessory to create custom beats beyond the buttons. You’ll find our reproductions of those patterns in the preset browser, with not-so-cryptic names 😉
Not surprised. I could feel it coming in the air tonight.

Have to have it 🙈
What was lead synth you used for the Joe Jackson demo? Sounded awesome 😂😢😮
Wonderful walkthrough! My biggest question though: What electric guitar sound is used in your slight variation of "Stepping Out"?
Thanks 🙏 The guitar is a stock sound from my beaten up old Motif kbd.
Do you know what drum machine was used in “I’m Your Boogie Man”?
Great video. Can all the sounds changed to a single instrument? Like all snares, All tom Toms etc Regards.
Hope I'm understanding your question correctly... any sound/mixer/effects edits "stick" as you change patterns with the front panel factory and user beats, but there isn't a way to globally edit or lock sounds when you change presets using the main preset browser (purple strip at the top).
Not sure how to create a song from my user presets. Any advice most welcome. :)
Can you use/program individual notes in midi or does it just give you different patterns within the plugin interface?
You can create and save your own custom patterns
See the specific sections on "Using CR-78 Multi-Out Version" and "Using CR-78 as a DAW MIDI Sound Module." If you need more assistance, feel free to drop our Support team a line, and let them know which DAW you're using
Was wondering if you could press down more than one button.
Yes, select the first pattern as usual, then shift-click the second one
I guess Ill never know what the last mystery song is.
@@CherryAudiovst Thanks very much. This is such a great release!
