    Arguably the best analog poly ever made (WHEN IT WORKED) I have had the ability to A/B this with many other synths and just its saw-based pad alone blew everything else away- CS80, Oberheim 8 voice, Memory Moog, Prophet-5 , Jupiter 8, Voyetra 8. With their expander you had 32 audiophile-quality oscillators and it had balanced outputs, so panning each unit, you had true stereo heaven hugeness that blows away anything I have heard. Some of its special features were: wooden weighted keys, changeable signal-flow ( algorithm), assign anything and everything to the levers or pedals at the same time and bi-polar, poly after touch, poly glide(glissando) AND portamento, sequencing, splits. The best way to describe it is a polyphonic 2600 with memory and better sounding hardware, its patch matrix is virtually unlimited. If you buy one expect to pay a lot but they are worth it but you MUST check these things out: make sure all voice-boards are working and calibrated, has the updated power supply ( do NOT buy a unit with the original power supply) has the MIDI upgrade, none of the leaf-springs are broken on the tail-ends of any given key, all of the panel-membrane switches work, inspect the molex connectors(inside) for tears, the d-sub port works ( essential for expander). These are very old so its only logical to assume some things that came with the unit are no longer with it, but you should ask the seller anyway: Both manuals, control pedal, dual-brass damper pedal, ATA-flight case, facsimile parameter chart ( VERY useful).

      K2000 can come close. Not so fast and not as fat. But still routing wise it'n no problem. Waldorf's also come close. And great demo!

      The original power supply is fine if you install the CC+ computer board which drops the power draw dramatically.

      Yes, you here that all the time...well...no you don't. It does sound great and fun to program too...um...oh wait. It's a great keyboard players synth(see jazz riffs and Herbie Hancock references). I'm sure the next keyboard they bought after the Chroma would be the DX7. For synthesists, not so much. I'd take my MemoryMoog over a Chroma any day.

      Thanks! I agree with Madrrrrrrrrrrr that the K2000 and some of the Waldorfs can do what we're hearing. But neither the K2k nor anything Waldorf existed in 1982, which makes the Chroma a bit of a marvel in that way.

    this is the video that sent me down the rabbit hole. the vision behind this machine is still so fresh and exciting. I am now in the process of designing a synth very similar to this. thanks so much for the inspiration!
    PS: if you want to see the chroma in action, check out the video titled "herbie hancock & the rockit band - live in baden baden 1984"

    Phenomenal synth that is very underrated. The Chroma is one of my favorite synths ever and rightfully so. Glad to see you own a Memorymoog and OB Four Voice too.

    the demo is great but pity you didn't run the instrument direct... honestly its blowing me away except for the tinniness, and yet I'm thinking it could well be simply the amp, room sound, and mic.

    " memory mode could not due " at 4:24 that piece you played is really expressive. Excellent work. The music scene is in complete drought of that . Can you suggest where viewers can learn that style chord progression and scales? Im really tempted to sample that motif /phrase onto the mpc very well played! Have you any records out?

    I don't know what to make of the Rhodes Chroma ... the exterior is beyond nice, and the possibilities are over the top, but like the first DX7, apart from a few classic sounds it's pretty much useless, unless you really dig into the programming part. Very metallic sounds, like the Ensoniq VFX, Prophet VS, Elka Synthex or PPG Wave ... but that was the ideal back in the 80s :)

    Blimey! How did u get that gong sound at the end? I want to try it on my midi Chroma. Its just like the one Tangerine dream used from a Synclavier! This was at start of Exit album on Kiew mission, programmed in the studio--not sure if they played a recording or sampled it to play live? But to think that complex sound can come out of an essentially analogue keyboard----wow!

    Why always compare it to "Memoog"? Not just feature- even soundwise I´d place Chroma above the machine beside. In general moogs are excellent & made history by good reason but still are almost worshipped a little too much. If I´d to select between any moog (even a model 55) or the Chroma guess what I´d take?

    • @eframp
      @eframp 5 років тому +1

      We'd just finished going through the Memorymoog, so as best I can figure that was still on our minds.

    Wow that sounds nice. How similar was the Chroma Polaris? Was the Polaris a scaled down version of this? I played a Polaris back in the 80's (considered buying it) but I don't recall it being as impressive as what we hear here.(but then that was a while ago) ;)

    • @eframp
      @eframp 5 років тому +2

      The Polaris has some interesting things going on of it's own, but a full-on Chroma it definitely is not.

      There are multiple Chromas (and Chroma Expanders) in live videos from 1982-84 of the band performing it, and the famous video of Herbie working with Q in the studio has the Chroma right smack in the middle of things along with the Fairlight. So take that as you will...
