Paper thin veneers on the top and bottom, giving a quilted maply look. The looks like an okoume veneer. They are using wood, but it looks like different types of wood glued together. Christmas bells are getting ready to ring! Merry Christmas, Jason, and I think choosing ebony will look really good!
Your friend's a good woodworker. Great job on that forearm cut and the stripping/sanding. Saving those veneers without damaging or sanding through them is not easy. Ebony stain and hand varnish will be a nice finish with the black hardware. I like where this is going! A good guitar adventure.
I imagine some of the enjoyment may come from the challenge and seeing the final outcome. I love it. My woodworking and guitar maintenance skills are below J-Man’s but I am going to buy an inexpensive guitar and see how I do. I can’t see doing it on an expensive or moderately expensive guitar. May do the Amazon try. Love your videos.

Hi J-Mann, Good to see you again. I ended up with Bells Palsy when I woke up Tuesday morning, so the left side of my face doesn’t work, can’t blink or eat properly. Please keep me in your prayers, I’m really down right now. Thanks brother. 🙏🏼💛
Looks like the top had a thin veneer. We use to call furniture that had an artificial face a photo-finish Usually, any painted guitar has B wood laminated. .
Nice exposé! I have a Grote LP with a flamed purple top that is obviously a photo decal. It has a small defect that exposes this illusion that I tried (unsuccessfully) to drop fill... oh well. Love your experiments on budget guitars! Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Looks like your friend is a highly skilled woodworker! I’d say he made a good call on not removing that flamed maple veneer completely. The wood grain revealed on that forearm carve actually is NOT bad looking at all, but it’s really difficult to know for sure how the wood would have looked underneath the rest of the veneer, and what you saw revealed in those routes did not look promising. I think poly is the right choice for the body, too-I would NOT want it on the neck, but for the body, absolutely! I’ll be interested to see how it looks in the end.
@j-man9457 , when mine don't sell, I give them away. 😤 the world has changed. I do the buy one let one go too. Problem is now, I love the 6 I have now. 😆 🤣
