DIY Conductive Paint for Electroforming

  • Hello! This is my process for making my own conducive paint that I use for my electroformed work. I do not have editing software since I don't do videos very often, so I apologize for the long take, but I needed a way to explain it better.
A few things I left out:
The paint lasts at least a few months, I've always used it up before it went bad
You may want to remix it with the Dremel every couple of weeks, or every few uses
To see examples of my work, check my Instagram @venusarcanum

Hello all. Just wanted to make a suggestion. If you mix the graphite with acetone first then mix it with the paint it will mix up easily without power tools.

Take a long bolt spin a wing nut all the way to the bottom [head of screw] those make a great mixing paddle

The black acrylic paint has carbon black which is going to be more conductive than any of the ingredients in white.

Hi Cora, Thanks for the 'no-nonsense' video. My kitchen is my laboratory too! ;-) Re. the paddle; I made one using a 3/16" dome head bolt (brass provides a rust free option), a nut to fit the bolt & a washer. I cut 3 notches into the washer. Use the hexagonal form of the nut to space the notches. You could use 6 notches but I found 3 sufficient. Finally, using pliers & a vise, or 2 pairs of pliers, twist the washer 'flanges' between your notches to get a fan profile. Secure this fan between the bolt head & the nut. A washer with a larger diameter is easier to manipulate. It's also a good idea to make 2 of these 'washer-fans.' Twist the vanes on one washer clockwise & the other counter-clockwise. Test them to see which works best with your Dremel's direction of rotation. One will be much less messy than the other! If you want to get really fancy you can round the corners of the washer vanes with a small triangular file. Brass washers are inexpensive so experimentation is recommended. I recently got a square nut & made a 4-vane fan. On this version I mounted the washer in place & cut to the flats on the nut rather than the corners. When I twisted the vanes they got an interesting profile as they bent around the nut's corners. I hope this rambling description helps. Regards, frank.

Make a paddle using something you can flatten. For instance; you can drill 2 or 3 holes in the end of your bamboo stick there, put on latex gloves , knead up some 'QuickSteel' from Napa and smash it in there, get your paddle shape made. You can cut it nicely before it completely hardens. Beware; that stuff gets hot! Also, if you don't wear gloves you will get it stuck inside your skin. Another option is to melt milk carton in the oven at about 240F. Pour that into a sand mold. You don't have to use a dremel but it's higher rpm (good). You can just use a drill and drill bit, using your drill bit to drill into your new milk carton plastic paddle.
Finally you might just split the end of the bamboo and put a piece of milk carton plastic in there, so you have 2 fins. Superglue it in place, or use 5 minute epoxy.

For 3D prints, I also have this idea of using and acetone or dichloromethane (if my PLA doesn't smooth with 99% IPA) as the solvent with graphite so basically the graphite solvent paint suspension (have to mix well before applying) literally just kind of melts/dissolves into the surface so might bind better. Jason Welsh I'm thinking might be doing that in one of his videos.... acetone I think with graphite. Then once drys, just steel wool or brush or buff off. My guess is dichloromethane might be better for PLA. Acetone for ABS reads like.

Neat, thanks for sharing. Wondering what at the Dollar Tree is going to be purchased next to experiment with... black acrylic paint if I don't find any around here in that art supply box from middle school that I think is still somewhere around here. Was wondering about using epoxy thinned a little to paint on the surface and then just dusting and then maybe a little more slightly aggressively painting on the pure graphite? I'll have to see what lubricant of the graphite I have around... though will budget for a bag/bottle of next month. Seems I bought a little bottle for foundry work also, to make graphite crucibles or something since was wanting to do some lost PLA casts for parts. I'm going to try to copper and then nickel plate some 3D printed parts for a sewing machine. I also want to replate some parts as well to restore that were rusted really bad.

Good vid very informative. Try a plastic knitting needle for your stirrer, they are thick enough to remain rigid while spinning and with a little heat on the end it can be flattened out into a paddle shape.

great info, thank you! I'm new to this, but fwiw I've found that a cotter pin stuck in a dremel is a great way to make a stirrer that won't bend like wire, you can find them at home depot in the hardware aisle, in the little drawers for special parts.

Using airbrush medium (acrylic polymer) and a bit of airbrush thinner instead of acrylic paint and water, you would get a way less viscous result that you could even airbrush it.

Hello. Would you or anyone mind answering a few questions of mine? I'm studying on electric/conductive paint for a science fair(I know, it's kinda lame) so watching this video, I was just wondering:
    1. I've found a bunch of DIY tutorials all over the internet on how to make electric paint. Sure, you use graphite(carbon) like everybody else but why is your recipe so simple? Idk, I was just wondering cuz there are many other simple recipes that I've found but they'd take more than just paint and graphite. So,what's the significance for you to do so?
    2. What's electroforming?? (don't be mad, I'm only 16.. you probably don't have to answer this one tho)
    3. I read a bit and *kinda* understand that electroforming involves transferring energy through water(????) Whether I'm right or wrong, if there's water involve, how is electric paint suitable for the job??
    Someone please help me :)

    • @mmarikawis
      @mmarikawis 5 років тому

well i am still before my first electroforming but i think:
      1. graphite is the ingredient that will allow copper atoms to transfer so you dont need much more but the paint is necessary so it will stick to the piece.
      2. electroforming - coating an item in a metal, it can be also gold, silver etc. as i said i am new and don't understand science well XD
      3. not sure, i know that battery acid and copper sulfate, i think (i study electroforming in polish not english) and that combined with graphite (it is the thing that transfers copper) and of course electricity will do the work, i hope you stillneeds answers, if yes you can find detailed description on electroforming on makers monologue's blog.

instead of Dremel for stirring, use a drill - it runs much slower and you could use a bigger sitrrer.

Thanks for the video great work I will be trying this. I am going to try 2 different mixes one with the graphite and one with copper powder paid around $7 for a pound of each but was wondering if the copper powder would make any difference in the plating process.

    • @corajones7907

shane bell - Copper powder tends to be heavy and quickly begins to separate from the paint. It could work, but would require constant stirring

Trying to understand the reason for the acrylic paint and distilled water other than as solvents for the graphite. Instead, you can simply mix graphite powder with acetone to create your conductive paint - and you won't need a power tool to mix it up. Just stir by hand with a paddle or small paint brush that's compatible with acetone.
In storage, the acetone will evaporate out no matter how air-tight your container is, but you simply add more at the time you're doing a project and stir it up again.

would acetone even stick to plastic or glossy surfaces?

    • @TheAstriapo
      @TheAstriapo 4 роки тому

Acetone will destroy some plastics. I'm trying a solvent based combo of denatured alcohol, shellac chips and graphite for dipping. My theory is, the denatured alcohol with evaporate quickly and the shellac will be the "glue" lol.
I've never done this before, but will be trying it this weekend. Lol
My question is, if both regular water and distilled water evaporate leaving graphite and paint behind, why does the water need to be distilled? Will it still change the Ph of the bath?

I tried mixing the powdered graphite with matte mod podge like Jason Welsh recommended in a video, and it did not work. :( Have you tried this, and did it work for you if so? I do have some black acrylic paint, so I'll make a new batch. But meanwhile I have 3 huge crystals coated with the mix I made, and not sure if I can just paint over top of that, because it wouldn't be easy to remove it.

First, thank you for the apology! thought I was watchin it dry instead of watchin it be made! lol Just kidding kind of. For your stir stick you would do much better if you take a long skinny nail, heat the head while holding it with vice grips and then hit the head on the side repeatedly to flatten it into a T. If you flatten it just enough you can then take those 2 little wings and very slightly twist them to form a type of propeller. then just put it into your dremmel and really stir it nicely. This type of stirrer will last you forever and will not accidently blow up on you one day. Dremmels are way too high speed for a wooden bit! Not callin you clumsy but at 54 years of age I can assertively say that I have the scars ta prove that you don't have ta get clumsy ta get hurt I would prefer to see you use a cordless drill for safety reasons [lower RPMS] because if you ever bump that dremmel while stirring you could really do yourself some serious damage! And I have accidently bumped them, I did appreciate learning how to make the paint. Sorry if I am sounding a bit too much like a Dad! lol
