    Intresting how there can be 50 people in queue but still takes over a minute to get a battle
    Maybe if gaijin gets some good serbers, queue times wouldn't be a problem

    air RB needs an Enduring Confrontation gamemode. it would fit the game so much better than the current deathmatch 24/7.
    if War Thunder took more of a DCS approach where we had huge maps with several different smaller battles going on at once it would be a million times better. and you could squad up and fly formation and properly use tactics with friends

      Exactly. You could actually do what modern fighters have to do, which is cruise at high altitude to preserve what little fuel they have.

      That requires a few very important fixes of its own - the one time RBEC jets was tried, it almost immediately devolved into airfield camping and constant strafing, because AAA in this game is incredibly lacklustre. Now some poeple have suggested replacing the AAA at rank 6 with vehicles like VADS and Shilka's, and then eventually in rank 7 with SAM systems. But this cannot work without server improvements either. It could not currently be done

      @@theScottishKoala i think for general, behind the scenes improvement, we need to see the game move to a different, more powerful game engine, and much better servers. The US servers (thinking about yesterday as one example) are awful. It is a running joke how bad they are. And it makes no sense either. The RU and EU servers are just fine.

      Why not have multiple airbases? E.g. rather than 1 base per side in the middle top and bottom of the map, have 1 on each corner?

    Bring back the Battle of Britain air map for top tier. Huge map that was too big for props, but is great for top tier jets.

      Guess what, we already have several maps big enough! Smolensk, Sinai, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Norway, Spain, Vietnam, Afghanistan and a few others are all 128km² when their full configuration is used.

    My suggestion:
    Introduce a whole new game mode called "Realistic Hardcore". Take great elements from simulator and bring them to RB. No overhead / Range cue (Both friendly and foe). Introduce random airfields and spawn points with minimum speed spawn and Focus on objectives instead of pure pvp like clearing SAM Sites for example it allows for Jet bombers to finally be useful again.

      @@SebastiendeBoisgency nah nah screw that. Mechanics aside the game was ready for tier 7. Gaijin just refuses to actually upgrade their game engine. When gaijin "updates" dagor, they don't actually upgrade it, they just update it. The current game engine is a heavily updated game engine from 2002 or around that. Mind you it's not upgraded. There are a lot of reasons why this game isn't as good as it should and 80% is at gaijin fault.

    They should just use Simulator Battles Maps and more specifically their Enduring Confrontation maps. They are big enough for these jets, and are very fun personally

    I was thinking of this idea too to stop air field strafing. Obviously bigger maps but they could also not allow the other team to see your airfield on the map. Only your team should be able to see your airfield on the map

      I like that idea - although keep in mind that unless the location is random and changes by a fair bit, you're going to very quickly have players just knowing where the airfields are, whether they're marked or not

      i only see one problem with that airfield afking would become more common . i would even propose that each base has SAMs so that they can act as forward defense

      @@Gokaes Can't be done without server upgrades - SAM's as AAA is actually something Gaijin has looked into, but it just can't work currently. Also, as you say, it's too exploitative, so mechanics need to be reworked to prevent a player just sitting AFK on the runway untouchable

      @@spartanx9293 And I'm sick of fighting MiG-15bis and F-86 F-25 Sabres in my 229. Not to mention it's BS that the G-91 R3 (no missiles, somewhat poor acceleration) is at 8.7 and faces planes like the MiG-19 and MiG-21 F-13 and PFM that easily out climbs and out runs this plane.

    These vids, along with the stuff made by Ash, Spit Flyer, and numerous others really proves the point that Gaijin needs to fix their game if they want it to live past 2021.
    Yet again an extraordinarily well thought-out video by you Koala. Thank you and the other CCs for not only providing entertainment, but also tips and tricks for War Thunder that have probably helped a lot of people. If it weren't for you, I still wouldn't know the difference between an AIM-9 and AIM-7.

    As always, these are really well-rounded solutions for the whole of top tier. It's been quite a happy place for me for the last while, so it's always good seeing such a drive to improve it. The only thing that made me nervous was smaller team sizes, partially because the chaos of Gen 3 fighters in a furball is a really uniquely War Thunder experience. Like, kid me always dreamed of seeing these more modern machines in down and dirty clusterfucks, so part of the joy of getting to the current top tier was that chaos. I'm not sure I'd want that entirely gone, but as we already know about WT, it's just too damn bloated already, so maybe it really doesn't have a place. For the sake of game health, it's probably smart to have smaller team sizes, but it would definitely be a little sad seeing the fantasy large jet furballs somewhat vanish

      @@-Sober- Well I agree with you there's very little chance for this game to change at this point ; I actualy quited the game in january because of it's many probleme and it kinda saden me because I used to love this game. This is the only game like this an chances are their will never be one like it ; so seeing it being ruin like this really suck.
      However as long as the game is not dead there still things hope that it can get better they just need to listen (or think logically about gamedesign)

    After watching the video I can agree with everything. I love how Koala also gives solutions. Gaijin is really stupid for not using these videos as genuine criticism and working on these issues. I mean if I were a dev this would be super helpful free info.
    But nah gaijin loves to come out as a bunch of oompa loompas sitting on a mountain of potential.

      I agree, however there are somethings that gaijin cannot fix so easily, ofc many things they cant but they don't cause they are greedy and they know despite people hating it it will still give them money. on the other hand programming and game development is not as simple as it seems on the surface so yeah. its fucked up.

    I think the major problem with map design is that war thunder was originally designed to be a game simulating WWII era prop planes and early jets ie ME-262, ME-163, etc, that didn't have missiles. The maps are sized adequately for props and early jets, but if you put in planes that can break the sound barrier and can reliably hit enemies from across the entire map, now you have a problem.

    I absolutely love this video, save for the issues with squads. Squads should be able to be 5 men strong in a 5v5 jet match. Coordination in jets is essential, by giving squads such an advantage, you force the average jet pilot to try to work with their team more subconsciously by necessity; This forms a strong team play meta, which is desperately needed in top tier jets.

    I stopped playing war thunder a few months ago completely, got into DCS a few weeks ago... It would take Gaijin massively getting their shit together for me to play again... So in conclusion I will not be playing war thunder again.

    You shouldn't forget that in the current meta there is no reason for anything that isn't a phantom to climb to make their missiles more deadly since IR missiles still need you to get under 6km. The phantom is the only BvR capable plane and trying to fight it at altitude without being able to send missiles back its way is just stupid.

      If you DONT fight it for altitude, the Phantoms are practically untouchable anyway, as they can fly around at Mach 1.2 dropping AIM-9J’s down on top of you.
      Plus, a MiG-21bis still gets a HUGE performance boost at altitude, and has R-3R’s to think about. You’ve also got your RWR to help you combat Fox 1’s, while the Mirage for instance had the BVR missile on the centreline

      The F5 is a fantastic starter jet for dcs imo (its what I started with). It is a fairly simple aircraft to learn how to operate (You can learn everything in 1-2 days). It is also incredibly fun to fly on the cold war server where you can get into some good dogfights with mig 21's.

    You can say stock missiles and bomb loads are a necessity doesn't mean you're going to get them. Too many people will happily pay $100 (or more) to spade their next shiny toy.

    That bruh moment when everyone else has MiGs, Harriers, Mirages, Mysteres, and G.91YS with unique capabilities and roles, but the entire enemy team are Phantoms with gun pods and F-1/T-2s

    One other thing i would add to this. Actually have the missiles launch like they do in real life if that is a factor in their performance. I'm particularly referring to the sparrow.
    The A2A missiles always acts like they are rail launched in game, which is fine for most situations. But on planes like the F-4s where their sparrows are launched from a semi-recessed position it hampers their performance significantly since the fuselage of the aircraft breaks the lock the missiles have as soon as they become their own entity and the fuselage becomes opaque to radar for them. This forces you to have to launch them in a position where the enemy will fly back into their field of view to regain the lock since. But on planes like the F-104S and MiG-21s this isnt an issue for their radar guided missiles since they don't have the fuselage of their mothership obscuring their target, and flying directly away from their mothership gets them away from any of the fuselage that could obscure their target almost immediately.
    In real life when missiles get launched from semi-recessed positions or on a station on the bottom of the plane (examples being the F-4 or F-14 with sparrow and F-15 with sparrow respectively) their rocket motors don't activate immediately and they get kicked down and away from their mothership very quickly. This gets their seekers to a position where they can see their target (the seekers get automatically queued to their target before launch) before the seeker can be brought back to boresight for the missile, and some (iirc later sparrows) keep their seeker stabilized on the spot they were told to look at, which prevents them from losing their target.
    Admittedly this may not be an issue though if gaijin would re-activate the slew rate limit on missile seekers since it would take time for the missile seeker to move back to boresight rather than just instantly snapping to it.

    Addition to the bigger maps, airfields closer to the centre of the map, which you can't spawn at but can land rearm and repair at, (to help solve the fuel problem)

    with the EC maps being more common its becoming pretty clear that nobody wants to climb at all, best way to neutralize early radar is just to fly low

    A 6th thing we need is Ground Controlled Radar EXCLUSIVELY for Russian/Chinese/East German players. Fishbeds irl are made as cheap interceptors and their radar are only there to guide their missiles when the aircraft is in a good firing angle. To get to that 'good firing angle', ground control radar is needed to guide the aircraft into said position. Heck, even they were they ones spotting hostiles in the first place. Even irl fishbeds will not win a headon 1v1 with a phantom. It can only win if it catches the Phantom off guard, which is the main idea of the ground controlled radar thing. In warthunder, ground controlled radar can be implemented and it could detect all airborne targets within 3/4 of the map. However, the 'data' is only present in the radar section. Name tags will not appear above hostile aircraft.

      you mean a datalink? as far as i know it was only the bis that had a datalink, futhermore sweden was one of the early adopters of datalinks between air control and fighters/interceptor, all swedish fighters/interceptors after the j35B are integrated in a datalink with air cotrol

      all interceptions are made with radars that are not on the aircraft... either ground, ship or by a awacs. mig 21 is also a fighter, and not solely a interceptor.

      @@mitri5389 the first models of the MiG-21 were dedicated interceptors, from the MiG-21F right up to the PFM. The MiG-21M, and MiG-21S were the first air superiority models. Hence they count as gen 3 aircraft

F is uprated, M modernized typically, U trainer, R reconnaissance, T extra fuel, S saphir radar, bis the final definitive version. in soviet military the vvs did not have ground control module like the pvo ones did, so they where rarely used in that role and mostly flew cap missions and occasionally strike missions since they could also use simple ground attack ordnance.

    Yes to all of these !!! Also as an additional idea ( and something useful for all tiers ) would be implementing a way for players to escape the battlefield when the situation turns south. ( The Airfield may not always be a viable option ( Top Tier its nonexistent ) I can except my loss but I dont want to be forced to die and lose a significant amount of SL because I have no choice in the matter. Give me a chance to fight for my survival.

    I’d like to also add! A lot of these players say the Mig 21’s have NO SKILL. These are continually F4 players and are literally requesting missiles that are OUT OF VISUAL RANGE. Saying “I can’t wait until (certain plane) comes out.”

    1 - Bigger Maps first and foremost
    2 - Scrap traditional RB, replace with EC
    3 - More meaningful RP rewards for upgraded Dynamic objectives, emphasis on overall mission rather than team deathmatch. Each person can select a primary objective and receive RP/SL bonuses.
    4 - separate team into squadrons, each squadron receiving a separate airfield and requiring cold start, and taxi to takeoff (think of mini DCS and EC had a baby)
    Problem solved

    The only problem I can see with those changes (which would be perfect for top tier jets like f-4s mig-21s mirages and so on), is that they would severely damage jet fighter at BRs of 9.0 to 9.7, things like f-86k, Cl-13b, f-86 f2, which would be thrown in huge maps with only aim-9b and .50 cals/20mm giving them an effective engaging ramge of 2/3 km, against stuff with sparrows (reminder the f-4c is at the moment 10.3 menaning it can snipe 9.3s with those aim-7)

    smaller player size per game won't work as long as squad system is still here.
    Been in 6.3 battle multiple times with around 5v5 players, the other side have 4 person squad, we have none. you know the rest of the story. That's why i no longer play on that BR range.
    even just a two man squad could easily manipulate a battle that small.

    My thoughts on the EJ getting two types of sparrow missiles is that since the phantom was used longer in Japan it gets both sparrows whereas the Americans moved on to another jet

    Frankly I prefer picking up a manual and studying it right now over what warthunder has made. All of the points you made I agree with. They are well thought out and take into account both gaijin's and the player's interests. But gaijin has proven multiple times to ignore these types of videos, and even if they did acknowledge or make an effort concerning them, no one would know, since we cant see evidence of it, and they dont tell practically anyone what they are doing, unless its self promo (IE South Africa).
    DCS is far more free in terms of what you can do, it has both PvE and PvP modes, _no grinds or stock grinds_ and not only small 1v1 dogfights, but large scale campaign missions as well, and everything in between, again both PvP and PvE, not even including that you can build or download personalized missions. So while in warthunder you have to worry about grinding for missiles, I have to worry about studying for five minutes to learn the cold start procedure on an F18. I think the only thing stopping a lot of players is the cost of a PC able to run DCS well, the cost of TrackIR/HOTAS/VR to actually fly in DCS well. I'll leave my point at this: if you have memorized all of warthunder's top tier jets, their flight characteristics, models, armaments, ect ect, and you have the proper equipment, then you are more than capable of learning the controls of a high-fidelity aircraft in DCS, and doing well in it.
    My next point is completely unrelated and about BVR engagements, and teeters largely on the edge of how gaijin decides to implement BVR type missiles, and I do agree with the points made about them here, and Im in full support. But I'd like to let it be known that, while AAMRMs are more lethal the closer they are (to a set limit, of course, but even then they can do some crazy things in dogfights and furballs), never is there a point at which something is un-defendable. So unless gaijin implements these types of missiles as ICBM-like missiles or something, even at 30 miles you have a fairly decent chance at a successful trash (defend against oncoming missile). Of course, the higher you go, the thinner the air is, the farther a missile's lethal range extends, but again, the farther a missile is launched from, the easier it is to exponentially increase the distance it has to fly to intercept you with a simple turn. Now (Im just going to use DCS's AAMRMs physics as a medium basis because its likely the most real here), 30 miles is around the max launch range for an AAMRM, *if you want it to actually be lethal.* At 30k ft, 30 miles is a decent shot, but once again easy to defend by turn and burn, dive into thicker air, ect. 30 mile launch at 20k ft is still not likely, unless they do jack minimal to defend. The likely hood should continue to go down as the altitude decreases, due to thicker air and more air resistance on a missile. Now 20-25 miles is a much better shot, but again still defendable. If youre low altitude, notch and dive below terrain, easy defence. If youre high, trade it in for speed, turn and burn, and easily defend. So an actually lethal launch with a high likelyhood of a kill, including overcoming a good defensive maneuver, would be about 20 miles, at 15k and below, 25 miles and 15k and up. The whole point of BVR launches is to generally make your opponent turn away and defend, that way you can advance to be more likely to kill him at a closer range, without him having a firing solution on you. _Not to actually kill him._ AIM120s (as an example) are not these super weapons capable of flying 50 miles at any altitude and guaranteeing a kill. The laws of physics simply dont allow that. They are Air to Air MEDIUM RANGE Missiles, hence AAMRMs. I'm aware that it is actually spelled AMRAAM, but it stands for literally the same thing. Advanced MEDUIM RANGE Air to Air Missile.
    To reiterate, 30 mile launch and defend would and should be typical, not a who-can-fire-the-missile-first-and-guarantee-a-kill type of deal. It shouldnt be guaranteed kills at 30 miles, and I hope Warthunder players learn how to properly defend. It could save their butts at 30 miles, as it has mine. Now your original points are correct, larger maps should be a thing, otherwise you guys would just be constantly defending and launching, which isnt very fun, and will end up with whoever has the better missile, not whoever fires first. Just as well the servers should've been upgraded years ago, when warthunder was taking off, and in 2020, when the pandemic allowed hundreds of more players to come online consistently.
    That said, I pray for gaijin's implementations of 4th gen stuff to be decent, but looking at their track record in warthunder, that seems like a far away fantasy, especially considering quality control, and the half assed developments. For there to be proper, semi-realistic combat here, gaijin is really gonna have to work at it, unlike their helicopter developments, unlike their traction developments, unlike their VTOL developments, unlike their Modern Carriers, unlike their map designs. Im seeing a pattern here.
    I hope for the best, really, I do. Warthunder seems like such wasted potential if it turns out bad.
    But I suggest prepare for the worst.
    I know it was a long ass comment, I know. But BVR stuff is complex and not easy to talk about. So I apologize for that.

    I think an issue with the fact that there are too much players in one game also disadvantage some vehicles. Take the F4E, which has a ludicrous amount of missiles, against the mirage, which has... 3.
    That means that very often the mirage will use all of his ordonnance quickly to deal with 3 enemies, and end up with only the possibility to use its cannon against an F4E which will most likely still has at least 2-3 missiles left.
    However, with fewer people engaged, the F4E would still have more missiles, but that only mean that the mirage would have to be more precise, while the F4E which has missiles that are not has good as the mirage’s will have more opportunities to use them, which would balanced them by a large margin.
    Or have larger maps so with many small fights so plane can land and rearm.
    I mean, we already have simulator maps to transfer for realistic. Plus their are many airfield so enemy team can easily find you and straffe you, especially when you know you can clutch because the other team is not that good but your teammates are all dead. That’s something you can somewhat do with props, but not jets, because the map are to small

      Having fewer players also means that the Mirage will be able to take out a larger chunk of the enemy team - if all three missiles were to hit, that could be half the team dead, instead of a fifth. Then on larger maps you’ve got the ability to easily go back to base to get more and come back in without being strafed

    Wishful thinking. You see Scottish Koala, F-14 can grind missiles killing aa batteries and light pillboxes. You ll be able to use radar missiles at 15 km. Take it or leave it.
    Of course we cannot increase map size right now(right now as in 5 years from now) so we'll instead spawn you at maximum speed at high altitude 25 km from each other, right on time so you start spamming radar missiles.

      Not if you understand how to combat them - anyone with an RWR should be able to avoid an AIM-7E or R.530
      Spey Phantoms true get an engine performance boost at low altitude, so that does change HOW you should climb (gather speed first on the deck and then zoom climb). But they’re still Phantoms, and therefore should still be used at altitude.

    So coming from a DCS perspective, lowering the player count per match probably isn't necessary if you make the maps sufficiently large enough, DCS Maps are the size of nearly 3 countries so the player density is lower per km or nautical mile. So to fix the missiles are easy "issue" sufficiently bigger maps with more than one airfield spawn should fix things especially when fox 3s come with 60km (30nm) launch ranges .

    In honesty, back when i played warthunder i was never interested in jets to begin with. For me the only "fun" are dogfights with ww1 - ww2 era planes. But thats just my personal opinion, i prefer going at each other with rather "slow" bf109/spitfires and burst mg/cannon rounds at each other over lock on missiles.
    The good thing, in wt you don´t necessarily need to progress beyond a certain point. So you can comfortably stay at a certain rank/tier/level (whatever) and never have to face stuff you don´t enjoy flying with or against.

    Why would gaijin give you stock missiles?They know about these issues and they know that a lot of people who hit top tier are the ones who are lining their pockets by paying their way to missiles after unlocking a new top tier jet. Everyone else can suffer, it’s not like they were going to pay anyway. Besides if they’ve gotten to top tier without paying, it’s not likely they’ll quit.

    They need to just use the sim map rotation for air and ground RB, I hate spawning within sight of a tank that can snipe a penny from 3 km away, or in your case taking off within range of a sparrow. Still could use game mode reworks but for a start Id like to see sim maps in RB

    I'd like to see, instead of smaller team sizes, maps large enough to split the teams into A and B (and maybe C) flights. i.e. 2-3 distinct spawns from different directions instead of the whole team in one spot and going to one spot.

    The map size affects all battle modes (AB, RB and SB) also in ground forces. Particularly past rank 5, maps are just too small to properly use high(er) tier vehicles. Will we ever see properly sized, properly designed/balanced maps in rank 6 and 7 in AB, RB and SB for rank 6 and 7 ?

      They could even add AI convoys possibly on the map.
      And for top tier jets maps like Boulogn Sur Mer should be the average map size or even bigger.

    The maps in WT need more attention, better missions, location and teams should be at least a little bit historically accurate, then u could aspire to balance. That is for RB, AB are fine being a random mix of vehicles from different nations, were u can release a new vehicle and throw it directly to the players. For RB every new mechanic introduced in game will modify the meta, thats why u need more procedural maps and missions, and some dedicated to just a certain BR bracket. Then and only then u wont find those things desperately needed for a certain type of vehicle, because u wont find a Phantom fighting in a map conceived with ww2 or early posrt ww2 scenario set in mind.

    Can we talk about for just a minute how "operational range" in War Thunder effectively always means this weapon can vaguely be fired at half of whatever number is cited?
    Even against bot bombers that are moving towards you in air assault arcade a 15km hit with a sparrow is pretty good.

      I’ve gotten 24km hits before. It’s all about the relative speeds and altitudes - at 35,000ft, with both targets travelling towards each other at Mach 1+ you can hit at around 40km... or at least you COULD if render distances allowed that. If you’re both going near Mach 2, then 50km is the theoretical max range

    Small problem the mig 21 would suffer fuel shortage if it has only got like 15 mins on full with afterburners

    The stock missile problem seems pretty obvious to me.
    Just make the missile stock and the guns a modification

    Would be interesting as well to get a realistic blackout model, they added this to IL2 and it completely changed some matchups.

    Gaijin should split air RB tech tree to 2. One is from Pre WW2 up to Korea era jet. You'll start with pre-Vietnam era jet instead if you want to play more top tier stuff. Gaijin should set a map list JUST for these top tier jets, ones that are REALLY big that simply won't suit props.

    Maps are too small for early war battles. Let alone jets. The P47 absolutely destroyed the germans. But climb rate is such a massive meta the p47 suffers heavily for it since they cant just engage already at a high altitude like they would IRL.
