  • NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel gives tips he’s learned from covering international conflicts in Ukraine and Baghdad. He gives his tips from the frontlines in Ukraine.
The dangers and advantages of being a war reporter
"When you’re reporting in a war zone, you don’t have the luxury of showing up and going wherever you want," explained Engel. "You need to ask yourself, 'Is it safe enough to go there?' If you determine it is, and it’s possible to get there and back in one piece, then you go."
"The great advantage to going to frontline areas as a war reporter is that you can talk to people who are directly involved. It’s not hearsay. You’re talking to people who were involved or were witnesses to a battle or a mass grave following human rights abuse."

Ive been working in commercial production for about a decade feeling a call for something with a soul
Where is a good place to learn to do this? What companies should i reach out to in order to seek this employment? Not just wars but humanitarian crisises and such. Would love to be a camera operator in these situations to help people by spreading the word of bad situations be it famine, war, environmentalism, or other hazardous activity.
Ive always been good in bad situations. Calm and ready is how I'd put it.
Any insight would be good, people in my section of the video industry are mostly disconnected from news and often look down on it.
