  • This is a quick description and demonstration of the numbered fast break. This is the offense that will allow your team to score more points, win more games, have more fun and most importantly, impose your will on your opponent. You have to commit to it and you have to practice... When you team buys in, you will look like a genius.

    Push the pace.The best case scenerio is they "bust their tails" to get back every time. its exhausting mentally and physically. The fast pace is fun at first, even contagious, especially if they are hitting shots. then it consumes them. Their legs get tired and they start missing shots.They miss defensive assignemnts. Of course when a team gets back, players have to make plays and get to the middle of the floor and get someone else a shot. Spacing is KEY! But its all about fast practice

    I love your energy and some of your comments "you're not Hakeem." LOL. A lot of guys talk about how great they are/were...few have the numbers you had. Impressive. Keep posting more teaching videos please.

    Jordan was asked one time about what make him the greatest player of all time. His response stuck with me forever and he said his key was his ability to transfer mentally from defense to offense (split second) then explosively attack the basket. Nice video.

    In Westhead's LMU system, the first option in the break is #5 to #1 to #3 for a layup.
    It's a diagonal pass from the ball side to the weak side (#1 to #3).
    The second option is #1 to #2 for a 3 pt. shot.

    Great stuff teddy, you’re still the man.
    I was wondering if tts to early to start teaching 3rd grade boys the numbered break. I would love to teach them a lot of transition stuff to take advantage of kids not getting back and being bunched up by half court. Thanks bro

    To me, a full court Press/ Trap should be a lay up drill. If a team presses you, press them back. The 5 man must do their job!!! When you take the ball out of bounds with the intention of scoring in 4 seconds, no trap has the time to get set up.

    You have various options after the initial break.
    You can go #2 to #4 on the low block. #2 to #5 to #3 ... many different options on the secondary break.

    Remember to tell your Throw In Man that because A SHOT WAS MADE he can Run the Baseline. If they spring a Trap on you that extra Mobility for the Throw In Man will help Relieve that Pressure.

    Just found your videos today. Very insightful information, thank you! Am I assuming correctly that the 5 trails the play down the center of the court so they can also react as a safety if the offense turns the ball over?

    • @TeddyDupay
      @TeddyDupay  10 років тому +3

      Yes. 5 man is often a "2nd PG". Upon ball reversal, the 5 man is the trigger man and should really be able to shoot and score as well make plays for other people.. 5 is the trigger. Its his job to get the balls out of bounds quickly as well. I usually put my smartest, most coachable player. The 1 is responsible for floor balance. Actually, everyone is responsible for getting back on defense. Giving up easy buckets due to lazyiness/ not getting back can be crushing.
      I like the 5 man trailing hard and then hitting the offensive glass hard with a running start and a good view of where the shot may be missing if the 2 man gets a shot up quickly

    Teddy... NOBODY and I have looked for YEARS ever shows the options available in the Secondary Break.
    I see video after video of the Primary Break and options like you have shown. But they tend to leave out anything past that.
    I want to use videos to supplement my coaching so the players can continue to learn at Home. But no luck in this area

    Hello Teddy
    Great video! My girls have almost got this concept in practice so we will start implementing it in games. I want to be proactive and have secondary options for the numbered fast break. Do you have any?
    Maybe make a follow-up video?
    Thanks

    #5 man inbounds to the #4 man.
    The #1 man takes off and the #4 man hits the #1 man as he heads downcourt, and the fast break continues.

    Teddy,
    When it comes to scoring options off this break are you looking for the 2 to take a three if he has it or do you want him to drive the ball to the basket looking for the layup or the 4 if he's there.

  • @coyhall4333

    Hey Teddy, thanks for posting the video!
    I love the idea of running this every possesion. But....I run a man-2-man defense all game long, so it's hard to predict where certain players are going to be on the court when the shot goes up. Sometimes my 5 man will be in a good good spot for this, but sometimes he may be chasing his guy down out at the left wing. Same for the other players, too. What do you suggest?

    • @brucemercer7753
      @brucemercer7753 5 років тому +1

      He said in the video. No matter where your guys end up they need to run down the same lanes.
      But you can be just as effective having your guys just fill whichever lane with just a few rules.
      If the shot goes in... Your 1 can get the ball on either side if the court and your 5 can still take the ball OOB.
      This works because the 5 can run the baseline... so he doesn't end up on the wrong side of the basket.
      And you 4 just has to get tot he Center like normal.
      Your 2 and 3 can go to their nearest lane instead of running across the whole way... sometimes that will work perfect by just going to their nearest lane and IF they both end up in the SAME lane the guy in the "wrong lane" has to fix it by getting to his "normal lane" OR if they end up same side you add a wrinkle into the system that changes the play... a Screen or a Swing Pattern or something.
      On a missed shot... you have to Rebound of course. Well who is going to get it? You don't know until it happens.
      So if you have a 2 or 3 that can bring the ball up effectively... they can just bring it up and the 1 fills the empty lane.
      So if the 1, 2 or 3 gets the Rebound they become the 1 and the 1 rotates to the 2 or 3 for this time up the court.
      (Obviously of your 2 or 3 are not good ballhandlers you do not do this.)
      Then for the 4 or 5... the one that Rebounds becomes the TRAILER and the other RIM RUNS. Simple.

    Hey Teddy, great video thanks. Quick question for you (apologies if I'm being slow!) - what do you do on a rebound if its secured on the left side, say by the #2 or #3 man. Obviously the #1 has gone to the far right, a cross court pass is over the head of the "thumbs up defence" - does the guard push up and look for the centre man, or does the #1 loop back across? Thanks in advance.

    • @TeddyDupay
      @TeddyDupay  7 років тому +2

      Great question. The #1 will come back to the ball but we don't want to crowd the court. You absolutely want the outlet pass being advanced at least beyond he foul line. The #1 man will need to read that and make the passing lane available for whoever grabs the board

      @@TeddyDupay thank you for the question and response! I wanted to know how to transition of my 3 grabs the rebound. My 3 and my 4 are the best rebounders on my team. Does the 4 run the wing then, or does he stay in the middle of the floor?

    Paul Westhead recommends the #5 man use a baseball pass to inbound to the #1 man.
    It's quicker because it is one motion from the #5 man grabbing the ball with hands above his shoulders.

    • @TeddyDupay
      @TeddyDupay  Рік тому

      Plan on sprinting to the corner for proper spacing. Any dribbling penetration from 2 or on ball reversal will end in a shot for 3. If your personnel dictates, you can make 3 a primary option in any secondary action after ball reversal. Usually a good option if kids are right handed. I always prefer having a righty on the left, to attack the middle with strong hand, and converting reverse layups with strong hand.

      @@TeddyDupay thank you sir! I started working with this last week with my 5th & 6th grade girls team! Our first game is next week. I will continue to put this in my practice plan every day until it becomes second nature to them and will keep it in the practice plan...how long did it take for your youth girls team to get it to where they ran it properly in games? & how much time in practice do you work on it?

  • @TonyBoyIsHere
    @TonyBoyIsHere 11 років тому

    On the inbound pass from #5 to #1, you do want #1 to the right of #5 at the foul line extended.
    However, you do NOT want the #1 so close to the sideline as shown. If the #1 man is that near the sideline, the #1 man could be double teamed and trapped by the opponent in a full-court zone or man-to-man press.
    The #1 man should be about between the elbow and the sideline to receive the inbound pass from the #5 man.

    Teddy, what about a half court 3-2 trapping press? Would this numbered fast-break work?

    • @TeddyDupay
      @TeddyDupay  6 років тому +1

      Figure pushing the pace is always the best idea, to get the ball down the court before defense gets set up. Playing this way also keeps your players in "attack mode" and puts the opponent on their heels. Incorporating a numbered break system and rehearsing it consistently will also ensure you have proper spacing in a half court situation. Half court trap needs to be attacked from behind anyway, in say a dead ball situation, so having your 2,3,4 sprint the floor as a habit puts them in perfect position to flash to the ball against a half court trap. Hopefully your players are better than the other team's. This is also a huge help :)

  • @brucemercer7753
    @brucemercer7753 3 роки тому

    You don't have to make your 5 man the 4 man. That can be confusing especially if you are teaching the rest of your system with them at the 5.
    Just make it the man you want throwing it IN's Job.
    If your player who is usually THE 5 is the 1 you want Sprinting just teach this break with the 5 Sprinting. If you want your 5 Trailing then teach it with the 5 Throwing it in like Dupay is doing.
    -
    Personally I run the SWING or TRIANGLE as part of my Offense about 1/2 of my Offense is Swing or Triangle and they are always diagrammed with the 4 Trailing. So to keep it simple I do the same with the Numbered Break, the 2 Sides Break and the Grinnell Break... and both Press Breakers I use.

  • @fry503

    Just curious. Normally, my 3 takes the ball out. Shout I run my 4 down the left sideline and my 5 up the center?

    • @TeddyDupay
      @TeddyDupay  8 років тому +5

      +fry503 Which numbers run where isnt as important as having everyone sprint the floor in those lanes. You have to have someone sprint to the front of the rim. This will collapse the defense and in the event the other team plays poor transition defense, you'll get an easy bucket. Most teams have terrible transition defense and they never get penalized for it. The key to the lanes is that you have spacing. if a team gets back and stops the initial surge, a few quick passes and you'll have anything you want.

    Teddy I used to watch coach Morris run this and I forgot all about it. I coach a JV team on LI and I want to use this. My question is if they take away the 1 do we go direct to the 3 or 4 or does the 2 come up. Teddy do you have this in a PDF file. TY so much.

    • @TeddyDupay
      @TeddyDupay  9 років тому +4

      Frank the lawnmower! They can't take the 1 away if he gets his butt to the sideline. To much ground to cover. He takes off up field. if the 2 is open we go straight to him anyway because its faster. The key is get it out quick and constantly put pressure on them. A possession or 2 maybe but I've never seen a team be able to take it away. they are frantic to try in get back but they never get there in time and even if they do, its exhausting both mentally and physically. Coach Morris is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
