    I love how simple you make this and YES, the three R's are really what they need to learn most. I am amazed how other curriculums have so much content, then I'm like, wait. . . No math, reading, or writing, what!? It's so easy to lose focus of what is most important. Thank you for this!

    Love watching your videos! It makes me reminisce on when I homeschooled my children. I miss it terribly and wish I could still do it, but my life schedule and situation forced me to put them in public school. Enjoy all the extra time with them! It's a precious experience, even on the chaotic days 😉

    I'm so glad I found your channel! You have been so helpful to me with your reviews! I am going to start homeschooling my 6 year old son (1st grade) and my 9 year old daughter 4th grade this next school year. I actually just ordered Horizons for both of their maths tonight before I watched this!! I'm so glad to hear you loved them! I also ordered the Sonlight Core B+C to do with them both next year! I'm loved hearing what you said about All about Spelling & Explode the Code..I'm going to look more into those for him...He has done Abeka all year at the private school we are at, so I thought about staying with that, but I'm still researching. We are all so excited & can't wait for the boxes to arrive. I need to get good with videos & do an unboxing! :-) Thanks again!

    Interesting to hear you talk about your son's age, and him being older for grade 1. Sounds like he's close to my son's age, who will be 7 in July. Here in Canada, the cut off is the end of the calendar year...so he would still be in grade 1, even if his birthday was December. My second son's birthday is in November, so I'm sure we'll have a slow start, with him being so young when it's time for kindergarten! 😊

    My first grader finished All About Spelling level 1 well before the end of the school year as well. We didn't move on to level 2 but will start that next year. We've been reviewing and using Spelling City. We also used Handwriting without Tears and liked it. We're using Right Start math right now but I think I might change that next year. Looking into Horizon math. Love your review video! I love seeing the options that are out there.

    So glad that I watched this! I didn't realize that we both had kiddos finishing first grade this year! I have been looking into math curriculum recently and hadn't decided which one to purchase, but I'll definitely check out Horizons for my guy. It looks like it would be perfect for him! :)

      aka Mommy... we also use horizons and we love it. doesn't over do it but makes certain to know the student is confident before moving on. I do find it to be a tad bit more "advanced" from other publishers so if you are going into it I would suggest getting a hold of the pervious years to make sure you didn't miss anything. so skim through 1st grades lessons if he is going into second.

    I am wondering if you could share a video that displays your type of organization for your classroom supplies, books, etc. I really enjoyed this video- We will be transitioning our daughter into homeschooling, which her journey will begin with first grade.

    Amazing video! Thank you for sitting down and giving us your time! Really really helps and encourages us newbies. Did some research on Explode The Code book 1. Looks amazing I think my child would love it! I have two questions. Would you recommend getting book 1 and 2 at the same time for those? My child will be kindergarten (fast learner). Do the books have a tear seam, where you can rip thw pages out of the workbook if you'd like. Again thanks for the videos ❤

      LaVondaMarie D hello, I would get it if you can because it's a small workbook and unless you are stretching it out you will be done with them quickly. yes, it does have a tear seam.

    Hi,
    I love your channel. My daughter is starting first grade in the fall.
    Was explode the code and all about spelling all that you needed to teach him how to read? She is at the same point that your son was (reading short sentences like “The dog ran fast.”)
    Thanks for your advice!

      I did "Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons" with my son this past year. He went from reading nothing at all to reading so so well. He now reads above grade level. I highly recommend that program.

    Hi Ashlee! Another awesome video. I was wondering, are you familiar with the BJU Press 1st grade math? I used that one this year. Although I liked the content of each lesson, and it was on par with my daughters level, it is set up to do one lesson per day (2 workbook pages and then another 2 review pages, so 4 worksheets on math per day) all the worksheets became too much for my girls to do. They would get tired of so many worksheets in one day. How does this compare with Horizons?

    • @GraceandGrit
      @GraceandGrit  7 років тому +3

      Kelly Genchi heyyy!!!! That does sound like ALOT, horizons is set up as one lesson per day. Which is one sheet front and back. That's it! It's a great amount in my opinion and they learn!

    Now that you are using The Good and the Beautiful, do you think it is enough reading and spelling? I have a first grader for 2018-2019. I purchased TGATB language arts for him. We have been using All about reading and I’m curious if I should keep at it with language arts?

    My grandson is bringing me his laptop everyday asking me to show him how to do fractions... I don't think first graders learn this he is only 6 years old... But he makes perfect grades in school and is a model student from his teacher's standpoint.. he's an excellent reader he was reading by the age of 2 years old... He can look at numbers and figure out what they are and where they go I don't know how he's doing this.. I don't even know if his teacher knows he's doing this what should I do?

      Laura Knauff we have done it the past two years and really enjoy it! We did primer last and are working through alpha now. I love how hands on it is, the DVD component is really nice, there is also cumulative review throughout which reinforces the concepts learned in previous lessons.

    Can you share with me why you would have gone with HWOT over ARFH? I use ARFH and have never tried the other. I would love to know your thoughts so I can see if that is something my son would enjoy better when he's ready. :) I love AAS and to stretch out the levels I join together AAS and AAR and then it stretches the whole year :D

    • @GraceandGrit
      @GraceandGrit  7 років тому

      *STARSofJEWELS* hard to explain but I just like the layout of the pages better. I like how they incorporate a variety of things into the sheets not just the letters. I like that the sheets are longer and the book opens flat.

    • @STARSofJEWELS
      @STARSofJEWELS 7 років тому +1

      That makes sense. I wonder if I should try it for my son. How much more expensive is it compared to ARFH? My daughter is working through those right now but I want to make sure my son has good handwriting haha. He might need a little more help than she does ;)

      *STARSofJEWELS* I actually think it's less 👍🏻
