    Sam, Thanks for the video. I have absolutely no experience with any laser engravers or cutters. This gives me all kinds of ideas, and just something more for me to research with a possibility of buying sometime in the future (when we are actually living at our new property). I have years of experience with cad programs, mostly autocad, so hopefully some of the stuff I have access to for dxf files could help. Thanks again for the video, and hoping you all have a Merry Christmas!

    You could not ask for more from this review with the content covered. An excellent laser but as you say there are some limitations. The way to solve the limitations is as you showed be creative around that.

    Great video, a clear, detailed and fair/honest take on the product.
    I’m curious how much material is actually removed - how much relief is there (etc, how deep is the cut) on say the slate coaster after all the passes? Ditto the metals after 4 passes?
    A side note: I wonder if it would be slightly faster dialing down the speed a bit more on materials, rather than taking two or 4 passes? I’m thinking that multiple passes mean that the metal surface completely cools before the laser comes around again for the next pass. I wonder if you could do copper in 1 pass if you slowed the laser down to say 80 - 100 mm/s? 4x slower would be ~63 mm/s, but I’m thinking that you might not need 4x the time if it was just heating the spot all in one go, rather than letting it cool fully before the next pass comes along? Probably not a significant difference in overall production time, but I’m curious how it would work out.

    Sam, props to you on saying that the M4 is NOT a fiber laser, even though everywhere on Aliexpress this thing is named as a fiber laser. Is that an issue to me? Hell no, it works, it's portable, it does what it's meant to. I'm saving money to buy that beauty and every single tool that I have (either on my personal workshop or at the company that I work) is going to be marked. Not only that, the amount of things that can be custom made with this tool is out of the charts. Currently, the amount of videos on this machine is very sparse, and yours did it justice, thanks for the content.

      Hey, so is this laser a fiber or just a galvo diode?

    • @TLAS
      @TLAS Рік тому

      A fiber laser is comprised of diode lasers passing through a fiber optic cable and manipulated by a galvo system.

    • @Graham_Wideman
      @Graham_Wideman Рік тому

      @@TLAS Wikipedia: "A fiber laser (or fibre laser in British English) is a laser in which the active gain medium is an optical fiber doped with rare-earth elements such as erbium, ytterbium, neodymium, dysprosium, praseodymium, thulium and holmium. " So, a fiber laser is NOT a diode laser.

    Nice demo of the engravers abilities and weaknesses. I think you might experiment with really fine engraving images, (can it do images?) is to place a fan next to it to blow away the smoke as it engraves. The smoke, as little as there is, interferes with the laser just a bit. I wonder if that would improve the engraving any.
    Speaking of the many kinds of smoke generated there I hope you are venting it to the outside or into a HEPA filter No doubt that some of that could give you lung disease.

    Great review. I have been keeping an eye on the M4 for a while now, but just haven't seen a review that covered all of my questions. Until Now !! .. After watching this, I am happy to know that it will do all the materials that my diode laser will not do. Your review pushed me over the tipping point on getting one. Until I saw the price :( ... The link you provided shows (US) $1699 + shipping, but here in Australia the M4 on Amazon is selling for $3000+ ... The M4 on Aliexpress is going for around $2000 (AU), but then I would put the extra towards a full blown 50w Fiber Laser with multiple lenz from 75 - 300mm from Alliexpress.

    NICE hat Sam. If it weren't for that really small area for engraving ... However if you don't have to reposition to fit the entire pattern in it.. great! As for that 5 watt limit ... a larger engraving region with a larger wattage of say 10 or 20 watt.... I believe the marriage of 5 watts and limited region is pretty much perfect but being able to enlarge the limits probably would be problematic for this type of lens/laser combo. Hang on - it does have its application niche.

    I have the Mr Carve M1, ComMarker 20w Fiber, and a Omtech 100w MOPA Fiber. I backed the Mr Carve on Kickstarter, it was my first 1064nm laser. To be clear, you are correct, the AtomStack isn't a fiber laser. It is a 2w 1064nm (DPSS) diode attached to a galvo head. The Mr Carve shipped with SeaCAD as well. There is a steep learning curve when it comes to using SeaCAD and EZCad, they are very similar in operation. Mr Carve was first out of the gate with a 1064 Galvo, this looks very similar to Mr Carve M2. I would bet that they share practically everything, minus the shell. The Atomstack looks identical to the Enjoywood M4. However, even though this isn't a fiber laser, it is using traditional fiber laser type software. I would suggest people be educated on the software before jumping into the 1064 Galvo and or Fiber lasers.

    Been waiting on you to review this one, as I've been looking at something to mark metals with. I'm sure lightburn will have it incorporated in the software before too long, they're really good with their support. The only thing I see on this that I'm not terribly happy with is the working size, 70mm is pretty small, I'll just have to see what size things I'm really going to work with and go from there. I'm pretty sure the Atomstack would have issues actually cutting metals, where a proper fiber laser can actually do that (at least from my research anyway, I don't have any practical experience with fiber/galvo yet). Still, the detail you got out of this thing on your examples is outstanding.. Wonder how long it'll be before someone figures out how to use this with a rotary, lol.

    Couldn't you take it mounted on it's base and use the holes in the base to attach it sturdly to the larger sideways piece your trying to engrave while supporting it by hand. I think this would keep your museles form getting tired of holding it instead of using it with the cone on it?

    The definition of a fiber laser is the laser used a doped fiber as the gain medium. It *could* be a fiber laser, the spool of gain fiber would be inside the box but the chances of that are slim to none. It is most likely just a more generic DPSS laser, possibly using some passive q-switching to get the high peak power, unless there is a frequency setting some place.

    That laser is a DPSS (Diode Pumped Solid State) machine.
    Has a diode pumped passive YAG q switch that puts out 15KW (microsecond) pulses that are 1024nm.
    For the price point, about 1/4 of a 20W-30W fiber, it's not a terrible deal but it is, as you say, pretty low power and has a small working area.
    Something for you to try:
    Defocus upward (away from the work surface not toward it) between 1-4 millimeters, with an actual fiber laser you can get colors on metal and enhanced engraving depending on what you want to do.

    I had a similar laser system for a short time (Mr. Carve M1). It works great on plastics, and marking metal, but it won't engrave to any real depth, even with hundreds of passes.
    I returned it and bought a fiber laser with a 50w JPT source, and the difference was unbelievable. The material that the smaller laser struggled to mark were cut completely through when I tried full power. If you're needing to actually engrave metal, not just mark it, get a "real" fiber laser and save yourself some time and effort.

    That banding didn't look like what you normally get on curved surfaces. ie my co2 would have had a slow graduation and not a line . to me it seemed more of a machine/software fault especially as it happened on the very start of the 1st move.

    I didn't see you wipe the slate clean prior to running the laser so I think the little dots were from dust particles. I could be waaaaay off base here but that's what my opinion is and you know we all got one.
    Yes, I had my glasses on.... Bahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!

    • @Samcraftcom
      @Samcraftcom  Рік тому

      If you're looking to engrave / mark the wood, then honestly any blue dot diode laser will work. Wood is one of the easiest things to engrave. Your budget will direct you, but for good prices SainSmart have good lasers. If you want "the best" I would point you to the xTool D1 Pro at this current time (Dec 2022). In my opinion they have their act together the best and have the full package of options & upgrades. Hope this helps!

      @Samcraftcom  Рік тому

      Yes, absolutely! That being said... don't get this model. There is a newer similar laser that is much better -- the Genmitsu Z5-1. I have a video on it: ua-cam.com/video/dqF7fbCeRcA/v-deo.html and a direct link to purchasing info: shrsl.com/3z1q5 If you wonder about what materials these will do, just search "1064nm laser engrave ___" and put in your material. It should get you the answers you need. These are usually good for all non-organic materials. Hope this helps!
