Thank you! I’m just starting to sew and I’ve bought mostly quilting cotton. I thought I was going to be in trouble but with your knowledge I’m not. Thank you so much! I’m a little less scared to use my stash. I’m always making a muslin first though 😉
Thank you so much for this video! I’m a beginner and I’m obsessed with quilting cotton. My newest adventure is sewing tank/sleeveless tops. My only issue with the drape is I have a large bust so definitely need darts. But I always get uncomfortable and insecure in my sewing. So - I’m gonna just give it a go! Thanks so much fir the knowledge shared! God bless you!
@@carolyncoppola974 I like this one:helensclosetpatterns.com/product/ashton-top-pdf-pattern/ and it's great for beginners. That designer is really good. Another pattern is www.sisboom.com/store/patterns/tortola-top-for-women/ but I've never tried that designer so I don't know as much. I know she designs for quilting cotton though.
It took me way too long to realise there was a difference between cotton for quilting and for apparel (dresses etc.) so this was very informative, thanks. I just would have liked to have seen some examples of what you've made with quilting cotton. The whole time I was looking at your lovely shirt and wondering if that was made with quilting cotton.
@@HeatherHandmade OK, cool. You mentioned quite a lot of items you've made with quilting cotton - perhaps you could edit some shots of those into the video? I'd love to see your work :)
When I first started out making clothes I wasn’t experienced enough to know about fabric types and bought some quilting cotton to make a dress. It was the Gatherkit Mortmain dress. It turned out so well, and I still wear it. The dress has pleats, and a fitted bodice so the quilting cotton worked nicely.
There's an interesting point where a garment done with thought goes from looking homemade to handmade. And I think we all want the nicely finished and thoughtful handmade look, where it's unique but well tailored
I am definitely a quilting cotton fan. My favorite pattern, the Sagebrush top, actually looks super cute when I've done it in quilting cottons, because it gives a lot of nice body to the yoke ruffle and big puff sleeves. I've also made it in garment fabrics like poplins and voiles, but the one I always get the most compliments on is a quilting cotton. I've also made a few versions of the McCall 8030 shirtdress out of quilting cotton, and after a few fitting alterations in the bust, I really like the way they look and have gotten lots of compliments on the wacky prints I use. Yes, sure, my clothes may look handmade, but like you said, that's not a bad thing! I'm proud to be experimenting and learning a new skill and expressing my creativity. If it bothers someone else, that's their therapy session, not mine! 😂
Oh, and something I made recently with quilting cotton was the Miette skirt by Tilly and the Buttons. This is a beginner friendly wrap skirt pattern and the pattern maker specifically said it works with quilting cottons! The skirt turned out so cozy and I love wearing it.
This was very informative. Answered many questions I had and gives me a list of other uses. Since I purchased for pajama pants for someone in the family, I was worried that it wouldn’t work but it sounds like it would be OK. I then went and bought some softer apparel cotton and making the same pants so either way both can be used and I’ll see if there is any issue but it appears many uses other than quilting are handy. Great information.
hey former sewist newbies, you know what all that quilting cotton you bought before you understood fabric types is good for if you balk at having a wardrobe look "homemade"? bed linens. but for real, tho, try a structured shirt or two. maybe look to vintage clothing patterns, you'll find more structured garments from that era.
Where would you suggest to buy apparel cotton besides Etsy? I wanna start sewing clothing and I wanna use apparel cotton but it’s so hard to find in my area with prints I like cause the selection is so small
I am not a quilter so I don't know. Also, that product has a different name in the USA so I'm not sure what the equivalent. I think asking a UK quilter would give you the best answer.
A cotton woven is could be a quilting cotton or very similar to a quilting cotton. It should probably work. The only problem is if when you recieve it, it is very lightweight. Just add some lightweight interfacing to the back and it should work great!
Thank you so much! I accidently bought quilting fabric for a dress and can't justify buying more fabric. You've answered all of my questions!
You are so welcome!

I think if you go into it knowing it won't drape, you'll make some amazing tops! Do you need pattern recommendations?

Thank you!!! There were some GORGEOUS prints I found but they were in quilting cotton and I couldn't resist 😭
Glad I could help!
Thank you! Newbie - learned so much from you, bless you !

Quilting cotton can also come in 108in wide - look for “backing” or “wide back” - it’s marketed for making the back of a quilt without piecing
oh this is so helpful! thank you!
I am just getting started with the.. The Sewing and I like to use more of cotton clothing.

Hi from Sydney, Australia! New subscriber. I'm an absolute beginner at sewing. This video is informative and succinct. Wonderful! 🙂

This video made me so happy! I want to make more button up shirts and I love quilting cotton prints and was hoping the two would go together.

These are great places to buy apparel fabric: www.heatherhandmade.com/favorite-places-buy-fabric/
Start at 6:00 for main info.
Quilt cottons make excellent skirts because it helps the garment to stand out away from the legs.
right!
I found the most gorgeous fabric online for my drapes but it is quilting cotton! Will that work for fancy drapes?
It won't have a sheen to it. It'll be a matte look but it could work great for curtains!
this is a good video, thank you
Glad you liked it!
Can u use medical cotton wool for quilting?

How do you know what youre getting if buying secondhand and it says "cotton woven"?
A cotton woven is could be a quilting cotton or very similar to a quilting cotton. It should probably work. The only problem is if when you recieve it, it is very lightweight. Just add some lightweight interfacing to the back and it should work great!
What kind of interfacing do you recommend?
It depends on the project, but for most cotton clothing I use lightweight woven interfacing (avoid the non-woven interfacing)
I have made tops out of quilting cotton.
awesome!
