This video is dedicated to my Dad, who paved the way for me by eating cereal for dinner in our campervan and showing me just how accessible travel could be
A few extra tips I forgot to mention: - I always find the cheapest time to book is 6 weeks before I fly - I always fly Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays as businessmen tend to fly Mon/Fri and families on weekends - The app "Hopper" can show you when flight prices are expected to go up or down - If a flight is full, offer to be bumped to the next one as you'll receive airline credit (or sometimes cash!)
I learned these 2 things from my friends who traveled across the US + Mexico in their van: - If you’re camping or in an RV, IOverlander is a free app that shows you all of the free + paid campsites and lists amenities as well. You can choose to just look at the free ones and if you’re ok with no restrooms it’s a great way to see more of nature. Most national parks have forests right outside of them where you can disperse camp and then get to the park extra early! - In the US, every planet fitness location has a free 1 day pass. So they would plan their shower days around the gym locations and they could work out if they wanted to as well!
the Planet Fitness tip is SUCH a goodie!! i feel like that's the updated version of my parents seeking out old pools haha, I'll have to let mum know :)
If you ever visit Scotland as a person who uses period products and/or condoms, go to a student Union or use the bathrooms on a Uni/college campus and you can stock up on these items for free :) (Some other countries may do this too?) Another general one is to take a reusable water bottle and whenever in a cafe/restaurant ask them to fill it for you with tap water! Saves on buying fresh bottled and helps the environment!
Was planning on working in a summer camp this year but unfortunately plans change, so will totally be keeping this video in the archives for next year! Your videos are getting me through lockdown 4.0, so thankyou for being you Ally! I appreciate you more than you know
aw thank you Holly!! I'm brokenhearted not to be at camp this year too, so making this video with all my travel tips is putting that knowledge to use at least!
Thank you for sharing all these tips:) hopefully will be able to use them soon! Honestly the intro made me quite emotional as I just miss travel so much and was meant to see some of these places last year but obvs didn't get to
Loved this video, Ally!! I absolutely agree that travel can be so much more accessible than what people think!! Crossing my fingers that it’ll be safe enough soon for us to all put these hacks to use!!

Me and my friend stayed with this super lovely guy who showed us his neighbourhood, let us cook is his kitchen while he was at work and even brought us to some awesome vegan restaurants 😁❤️
@@AllySheehan yeah you can see past travelers review and also you as a surfer get reviewed! I would never go without a friend or stay with someone with hardly any reviews but I think it's a really fun way to save money and feel like a local ❤️
The tip I have is to WEAR COMFTORABLE SHOES! I have made the mistakes of wearing brand new hiking boots on an 8 mile hike which gave me blisters the rest of the trip. Also learning that not everything is a fashion show.... I think it is better to be comfy and practical than good-looking (even if I am taking pictures). !! I love your video btw!!
So many great tips thanks Ally!!! I remember I went on a trip with my youth group for missionary work to Abbotsford Canada. My youth pastor”s wife booked our flights and she was able to save money for the church by booking our flights into Seattle and us driving the rest of the way in rental cars into Abbotsford, then we drove back down into Seattle and flew home from Seattle. It saved money and we got to see parts of the border and Seattle we would not have been able to see if we flew straight through. Taking a plane to a near by city or state to your final destination then taking a rental car (if financially feasible), train, or bus the rest of the way can help save money too.
Check the cost of your flight at the stopover point. A round trip flight from DC to LA and a round trip ticket from LA to Tokyo, is MUCH cheaper than a round trip ticket from DC to Tokyo. and you have to hang out at the LA airport for over 12 hours waiting for the next leg of the flight. Use the $500 bucks for a hotel room and a good meal!
I love all your tips, some of them I already know like the utensils from mcdonalds, I always keep the napkins , salt or kepchup for when I'll need them on the road, one major thing you have to remember is to travel with the RIGHT PEOPLE, cause some friends from camp are EXPENSIVEEE (I've been also a camp counselor at camp towanda pennsylvania) we decided to travel together (a british man and me - from Colombia) and he always want to buy expensive food from restaurants, get taxis , and dont to save anything at all, I woke up ealier to make a hugeee breakfast (we stayed at an AIRBNB) and I made sandwiches for the road/beach and he ate the sandwich like one hour after and of course get some expensive food, its like mannnn you were supposed to safe the sandwich for later, the breakfast was hugeeeee .___. some times I refused to buy more food for myself cause I had my sandwiches , and some other I had to buy cause he made me feel ''poor/trashy'' or he convinced me some other times, sometimes was good to try some new food but if you want to made the most of it, its not something you do every meal!.... so huge tip, travel with the right people.
When I lived in Byron my flatmate and I used to host couch surfers and it was so much fun! we would host around 1-5 people every weekend because we had a massive couch and turned our house into a hostel lol. Also I spent probably 2 years of my life working in hostels for accomadation and I only had to work like 2-3 hours a day and then got my rent for free. Was super epic in byron where a bed in a hostel room costs like $50 there would be no way I could have afforded living there without work for accom :)
If you want to hire a car/vehicle in Europe it's worth having a credit card. I got stuck paying the €200 card imprint fee as I didn't have a credit card. This can be easily avoided, and you can save a lot of money!
try and find a mall even if you're not planning on shopping just walk around a little some malls have cheap food like ik this one mall in a city I don't even live in or ever did but I went there multiple times and it has like a pretty big pizza slice for like 0.50? but do consider its in a cheap country so ye. And street food is YES. You get so much food for so cheap! and check out bakerys they often have food for pretty cheap as well. and if you aren't sure where to travel try small countries they are pretty fun
My boyfriend and I check-in for the flight the day before we fly so we can sit together without booking seats! Our theory is we get seated in the left over seats, and so far one of us has always had a spare seat next to us! 😊
this whole video really reminds me of kourtney kardashian saying when she was in HS/College her and her bestie spent ALL their money on a hotel/flights for spring break bc they were desperate to go and said they would just eat bagels all day the whole trip bc they were 60 cents hahahaha i've always thought that was GENIUS and also delicious
No but LITERALLY..... in high school a few of us got to go on a study trip to New York and were given $30 a day for food, my best friend and I would eat a bagel for 50c and a McDonald’s wrap for $1.75 and SPEND THE REST AT URBAN OUTFITTERS LOL
hell yeah! I've always been curious about Au Pairing, Woofing, all those kinds of experiences. I know about the Disney College Program, Camp Counselors (obviously lol) and Cruise work, but those would be SO interesting too!
@@AllySheehan me too! omg it looks like you get paid a lot with cruise work (basing this off below deck). This is a great video, but I just have to address something. "I feel like most people have apple pay now..." Sorry but nope lol I've worked at several hotels and most people just have debit or credit cards. And every business I've ever worked at so far (not just hotels) has not accepted it. Walmart might now, I'm not sure, but it's really mainly gonna be the biggest companies. It might be common in extremely big cities, but I would not say that it's that common yet, and i would highly recommend not counting on it. I've had to turn people away and leave them with no where to stay because they had no other way to pay, and I literally had no way to accept that payment. They were livid. (PS don't be one of those people. I was a desk person and had no control over what options for payment we had). They were not happy, and there was nothing I could do. ETA before anyone asks, I'm in the United States.
Book seats at the back of the plane! There is usually always spare seats in the last 2/3 rows. When i flew to Japan i ended up having 4 seats to myself!
