  • The final part from this trip. I explore Clements Mill Road and some of the side tracks. I also stop by the controversial Kaimanawa Wall.
    One of the side tracks proved a bit of a challenge, I came close to rolling the van but managed to make it through.
    Music:
    1. A Little Bit of Faith (Instrumental Version) - Malena Stark (Epidemic Sound)

    Hi just found your L300 4x4 travels and enjoying them. I’m a bit of a Mitsubishi nut and watch everything I can find with anyof there cars in them. Loved your 4x4 travels. I had a 8 seater L300 Starwagon in Australia and that thing was just a buzz to drive. A bit heavy on fuel but back in 1984 that wasn’t so much of an issue like today. I did over 400,000ks in that bus around SA , Vic and NSW. It never let me down. I did learn in the first 3 months of having the van never to give a map to the wife for directions. Coming back to Adelaide from Sydney one trip I thought it would be nice to take her close to the snow to see it for the first time. After getting lost I Canberra like all Australians do she managed to get us on a road towards Tumit in the snowy mountains. After a while the road seemed to go from nice tarmac to pot hole glory. As we climbed the mountain it turned to a dirt track and after a lot of arguing she insisted this was the road to Tumit. As we climbed to mountain with a steep drop one side and straight up hill on the right and no where to turn around she conceded she didn’t think this was the main road.??? Yeh right I thought. We climbed very slowly up rocks and mud to finally come to the top in a snow cover ground with a guy who looked as if he was just out of a cowboy movie on a horse looking at us raising his hat scratching his head. He asked where the hell did we come from and I asked is this the main road to Tumit. After he looked blankly at us for a while he said no your on the old fire trail that hasn’t been used for months, the closest main road is 10ks away. He was in disbelief we just turned up out of the blue on an old trail in a normal van. He reckoned he was getting a van like this after seeing that. We made it home after 2 mote days travel. Took the van in for its first free 2,000k service and found out the rear shocks were stuffed. They asked where we had gone and the wife said,”just to Sydney and back, the roads are pretty crappy” so they replaced them under warranty. I’ve owned 28 Mitsubishi’s over the years and not had an issue with one. But lover that bus.

      Thanks, that's a great story. They're definitely more capable than most people expect. Was yours a petrol one?

      @@SwampChook thanks. Yes it was petrol. Shocking mileage to. But only a small tank. They day we took it in for a trade inn the dealer was the same from where we bought her. They were amazed at the mileage but also amazed at her condition. The offer was so good we only needed a couple of thousand on her replacement a new lancer.

    The side track at 2:07 is currently not passable due to a fallen tree as of 24 Sept 2022.

      Nice one! I think it's worse every time I go there. First time it was just a gravel track.

    Here is the difference between standard L300 4x4, and one fitted with diff. locks.
    ua-cam.com/video/loL-InnevsU/v-deo.html
    Cheaper option is to switch the existing LSD to the front, and only modify the rear. Allows you to get farther into the scrub before you get really stuck!!! Carry a load of fabric horse feed bags under the floor. If you are in a place with deep ruts and there is nothing else to fill them with, convert them into sand bags.Works good on sand if you are stuck too.
    I nearly went down the quarry track at Xmas to camp for the night. Glad that I didn't. Stayed where you did. Wife enjoyed that fireplace.

      I definitely want to install a locker in the near future. I didn't know the rear diff head would fit in the front. I might have to do some more research. A bit of spade work would also have made a huge difference here, but was really just trying to push it and see how capable it was.
      It is a cool campsite there with the fireplace!!

      @@SwampChook I've heard the LSD swop idea on an Aussie video some time ago, but never tried it. I've found that a lot of owners don't even realize that they have one. Been told that if you change the oil, and use standard hypiod oil, the clutch plates won't grab, and it becomes a standard diff. When I bought my current one, it's owner never knew either, so I changed the oil anyway. The gold coloured sticker on the case stands out when the vehicle is new, but soon gets covered in dirt, or falls off. My original one spent its entire 34 year life parked out in the weather before finally dying of rust, and was driven all over NZ. Weakest point is the 5th gear arrangement. It's external to the rest of the gears. If you tow heavy trailers/boats, pays to minimize 5th gear use. Had to rebuild one using a scrounged gearbox from a diesel one for parts. If you hear whining noise from the gearbox, or get a strange vibration coming up the steering column, that 5th gears may be stuffed. Clutch plates on both worn out just short of 250,000km. Alternator brushes will probably be down to minimum at that stage too. Replacing mine next week. $8. Easier to change stuff around the back of the house before you break down in the middle of nowhere.
      Might see you out in the sticks one day. Keep safe.

    A cheap auto locker would go a long way in the rear of that van

    • @SwampChook
      @SwampChook  2 роки тому +2

      A locker would make a huge difference ay. I'm gonna save for an E-locker. I think an auto locker would annoy me too much on the road.

      @@SwampChook yeah an e locker is definitely the way to go if budget allows. Then the van should walk though that track

    Without lockers you are just 2 wheel drive .

      They have a rear LSD.

    • @SouthlandFlyer
      @SouthlandFlyer Рік тому

      Doesnt look like the rear LSD has much life in it anymore. Im not familiar with which type they are, but if mechanical then its quite likely they are set up reasonably loose to prevent them chonking on turns. This has the downside that you need some torque loading on each wheel to get them to start the lockup process.

    Why not just carry a spade

    • @SwampChook
      @SwampChook  2 роки тому

      Oh I do. That was more about testing what the Van can do. But yeah amazing the difference a little spade work makes.
