Many folks don’t know this (Monterey Pop Fest)was a showcasing (and a competition as such) between the more pop/folk sounds of Southern California (LA/Manas and Papas) vs the sounds coming from Northern California (SF) represented here by Janis Joplin. Notice how very generous Cass Elliott (the Gertrude Stein of 60’s music who at this point already helped to form Loving Spoonful/The Birds…) is towards the end of Janis performance and the wheels going on in her head… Janis blew away the critics. This performance, in many ways, was her making…. And she NAILS 💅 IT!!!
Janis was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Interesting Note: The lady watching Janis performing here at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is Cass Elliott from the group "The Mamas & The Papas". Her mouth drops & she mouths “Wow" after a particularly strong vocal run from Janis.
Exactly… one cannot miss Cass Elliott (the Gertrude Stein of 60’s bands/music) generosity at being publicly blow away by young Janis performance. Most don’t realize the two sounds (Northern vs Southern) were in a way competing here while showcasing their music! It was Joplins making!!!
Janis NEVER went out of style. You can find her CDs any music store. The sputtering is called "skattin" in Blues music. Her inspiration was Black blues singers. When she heard Bessie Smith had no headstone on her graves she bought on. Best way to listen to Janis is live. Her following has only grown with time. RIP Miss Janis
She’s always been my favorite female artist. She’s a legend. She’s #TheGoat! Nobody compares or can sing like Janis Joplin. ❤❤
