- Diane Abbott is “free” to stand as a Labour candidate in the General Election, Sir Keir Starmer has said after a days-long row over her political future overshadowed Labour’s campaign.
The Labour leader on Friday gave the green light for her candidacy, after his previous refusal to make a judgment led to growing tensions in the party.
Sir Keir told reporters during a campaign visit to Scotland: “The whip has obviously been restored to her now and she is free to go forward as a Labour candidate.”
He praised the Labour veteran as a “trailblazer”, saying: “Diane Abbott was elected in 1987, the first black woman MP.

@@MrKidOcelotthe independents are probably the most corrupt and insane of the lot.
They literally only went into politics because none of the parties would have them as they were transparently obsessed with one particular issue and have no idea or completely contradictory mad plans they'd have for all the regular day to day running of the country.
My local independent is obsessed with having a car park kept and some homeless cabins removed from it, that's it, that's their WHOLE campaign for why I should put them in Westminster. No idea where they fall on privatisation vs nationalisation or nuclear weapons or green energy or worker's rights vs AI development or whether gays can marry dogs or any other politics they might have.
I'm sure the fact that my local independent lives near the car park and his house has gone down in value now there's less parking nearby and more homeless people has NOTHING to do with his campaign 🙄
As time goes on, Starmer is beginning to look more and more like the Douglas Hurd Spitting Image puppet.
