What You Missed | Elden Ring DLC - Shadow of the Erdtree Breakdown

- FromSoftware just dropped the first trailer for Shadow of the Erdtree - an upcoming DLC to Elden Ring, and here to break it down is Dave Klein of DaveControl.
Miquella was the star of today's trailer, with the focus being on his quest to find out what Marika was doing in the Land of Shadow. Players got to witness spectacular looking new bosses, locations, and enemies, with the focal point being on the brand new boss Messmer the Impaler.
From interviews, we also know that the upcoming Land of Shadow will be a totally separate area from the Lands Between, and players will need to transport there via Miquella. According to director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the Land of Shadow will be roughly the size of Limgrave, if not possibly even bigger in scale - filled with plenty of exploration and legacy dungeons.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Eritrea is set to release June 21, 2024.

Here because Vaati hasn't uploaded anything yet
Me too!
Same 😂
Oh I'm sure he's cooking and it's going to be good.😊
I wonder if he'll touch on the idea that you cannot access the dlc without being online and performing a few invasions. Because currently, that is the only way to access this part of the map. Something that I don't mind btw.
@@newtonsloreyou can access that part of the map via a warp point in the Mountaintop of the Giants without doing any invasions/online
The omen lion enemy looks like it’s being puppeteered by 1 or two omens, like a Chinese dragon costume.
Yeah theres and extra set of more human looking teeth inside the mouth of that thing
I posted the same thought on the ER subreddit. You can clearly see both creatures in the one shot. My guess is a two part fight, one with them “together” and then a second phase where you have to fight both at the same time. Unless we have a Radagon-horse situation.
Mesmer eye is yellow because of dragon communion. So far everything we’ve seen of Mesmer he’s committed every taboo if not most. Miquela the nascent butterfly, Malenia the Aeonian butterfly, and Mesmer the smoldering butterfly. I’m willing to put money on him being a descendant of Radagon and marika since he shares the same hair that Radagon does from his giant genetics; and then he has a small piece of dialogue believed to be speaking to Marika. All this leads me to believe he’s definitely an Empyrean.
But radagons only children to get his red hair was born from Rennala. Marikas children were either cursed born or Blond like Godwyn.
In Armored Core your name is 621 …June 21st.
A lot of people aren’t talking about this but I feel it’s very important 3:49 the woman in the painting is clearly pregnant with her hand over her belly.
The Shadow Land, “where the Goddess, Marika first step foot.” Could that imply that is where she was born? Perhaps the old man and the pregnant woman in the painting are Marika’s mother and father? When the Elden Ring needed a vessel, an Empyrean, perhaps in exchange for power, these Numen’s offered their child Marika, as the first Empyrean of the Greater Will.
Great video! I can't wait for the DLC, it's actually not too far away
Glad Dave got to do this video!
Saint Trina is likely an alter-ego of Miquella based on what we know from the base game
Yeah, that explains the St.Trina Torch flavor text. They couldn't tell if it was a girl or a boy because Miquella is known to be very feminine, and to have been cursed at birth with eternal youth. AKA: Permanent baby face
Fromsoft dropping a potential GOTY as a DLC
Wont be GOTY with FF7 Rebirth. But it will be exceptional.
great breakdown
The purple looking swamp is probably related to St. Trina.
Messmer says “mother, wouldst thou truly Lordship sanction, in one so bereft of light?”. I feel this pretty clearly means that Messmer is the son(? Gender is such a construct in this game lol) of Marika/Radagon. Marika/Radagon allows you to become Elden lord in pretty much every main ending outside of age of stars and frenzied flame. So Marika/Radagon “allowing” you to become Elden lord directly coincides with Messmer basically saying “mom, why did you give this dude lordship”. As you stated as well the red hair is also a dead giveaway. I’d venture to say there is a 100% chance this is the case.
The boss/enemy at 5:12 is clearly based off the wicker man from Berserk, which is also fed by human sacrifices. Apparently it originates from Celtic culture as well.
Berserk, yeah, or maybe from the 1973 horror classic "The Wicker Man". Or its' absolutely classic 2011 remake starring Nicolas Cage. Radiohead also made a music video which references The Wicker Man. In short this human sacrifice wicker man is an old classic, not just from Berserk.
@@BlashmackBut it's relevant it's in Berserk as that is what a lot of Elden Ring is drawn from. Nobody is trying to recreate the 1973 horror classic, sorry bud.
@@Arcessitor Recreating and referencing some visuals or parts are two completely different things... you could say Elden Ring is referencing some parts of Lord of the Rings or Dante's Inferno, as a nod of respect and inspiration. That's what I was saying
@@Arcessitormiyazaki has literally never once mentioned being a fan of berserk
@@Blashmackberserk fans like to believe anything remotely close to berserk is a for sure reference to it. even though miyazaki has never once mentioned being a fan of it.
Can't wait!
@1:52 dang I didn’t know they added martial arts moves until looking at this part again.
Love the Chinese lion dance idea of that omen beast. Really interested to see how many beings are under there, and what they look like under the Serosh looking skin!
His eye looks like one you have when you use the Dragonaltar a bit too often so the Flames could come from that he ate a couple of Dragon Hearts and with them gained the Flames
It definitely seems weird that there's a world of shadow, how many different places did we go to in this one base game to know that there's other Realms to explore makes it that much better
I really hope you can carry everything from the dlc back into a new game in the base game.
Personally I think messmer uses a type of bloodflame much like mohg and he is potentially marika’s first born but unwanted child almost like a failed experiment maybe? Not sure if it’s explicitly stated or just a theory also but it’s implied that Trina and miquella are the same person much like marika and radagon.
Do you think Queen Marika will have an actress, and also having a backstory before she shattered the Elden Ring and gets crucified?
No
So happy I just finished this game it was amazing. Played on launch back then and quit at maliketh lol just could not beat him but went back and restarted and now just finished
What starting class you finished it with?
@@Gergus98 played a dexterity strength sort of build with dual great swords using lots of jump attacks
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
What a beautiful world
What is mesmer is miquella but a corrupted/dark form. Like Radagon and Marika
Pulling out a weapon?
Bro that old ghoul is pulling out his entire spinal cord! You can see his rib cage moving!
St. Trina and Miquella are one and the same. Did you not play the main game?
I’m pretty sure the Chinese lion’s “breath” attack is another beast incantation.
The lion is a manticore.
I think there is a chance that Messmer the Impaler actually is Miquella. He may have conquered the Land of shadow after entering it. Maybe he changed his name or people in the Land of shadow gave him that name, happend before in Elden Ring...
But then we will have to account for the fact that he's, you know, dead. Unless the Land of Shadow is the same as the Dreamworld, in which case he is both dead and in the Land of Shadow.
@@Arcessitor well, i mean, is °death" really permanent in soulsborne games^^ ?
Why is nobody mentioning the floating girl with blue hood might be the Sprit Tuning girl in the round table hold.
The one that cast the sleep incantation? You think that's Rodrika? Hmm...
One of the best hames ever made is going to get even better . Bring it on baby
Messmer has dragon eyes, wears dragon armor and casts a spell with what looks like the Dragon communion Seal...just saying.
4 more months with a total wait time of 28 months... This DLC better be big and worth the wait.
i mean they haven’t really missed with any dlcs
@@ajb31 Normally it does not take them over 2 years to drop DLC. This is probably the first time they drop a single big DLC instead of 2 or more minor dlcs.
St Trina and Miquella are the same person. He goes by a couple names.
Isn't St. Trina miquella???
St. Trina is Miquella. So... yeah.
Messmer is Merikas Brother
How do you know this? And why is he so powerful? Marika was granted godhood by the Greater Will, who granted Messmer power?
What if messmer is the frenzy flame
I would eeally doubt that
@@ostboob you may be right he embodies all of Radgon's and Marika's kids. But here's my question does Marika know what Radagon does when they switch places. Could he be the child of rennala and Radagon seeing that one of her children has an association with snakes and the red hair would make sense and the whole magical vail aspect of it all. Or the gloam eyed Queen because her and Marika were both candidates for Godhood and we don't know if she had kids maybe her and Radgon never know.
The ways this dlc starts is similar to bloodborne
Messmer looks a lot like Radagon
Maybe a relative or a cast out son like mohg or Margit.
But what if it is a true form of godwyn instead of a random omen or sirrosh
Thats not a beast. Its two men in a costume. Dead serious. Pause and look closely. You can even see part of the face through the mask
Like other comments have said, it's like a Chinese dragon.
anyone realize the girl in th epicture is likely pregnant? look at her hand on her belly....
Kinda obvious that st trina is miquella…. Don’t know how you didn’t fit it together
It's anything but "obvious."
Some of that stuff also comes from cut content, so it's always possible that is that case here, or they decided to do something different.
@@TheGrades90 he already pointed out that miquella loyal knights drop st trina lily…. Plus cut content suggested that miquella is st Trina so clearly it is obvious……
@@DaveControlLive probably but i doubt they would have changed that while having the only information on st trina being linked with miquella plus the description of st trina is similar to miquella with the only differences is that st trina is said to be an adult.. maybe miquella was able to change his appearance
@@joestr8848I am that guy - 😛
But, yes, I’m aware of the analogies. I think it’s likely, but figured I’d throw it by coworker’s thoughts.
I’ve also seen DLC where the cut content is confirmed to be correct, and ones where the cut content is now completely different, so I usually err on the side of caution with that stuff
Vaati at home.
a game I will buy but never play 😂... such ridiculous amounts of hours to fishing it... plus they have the tenacity to make a DLC for it 💀💀💀💀💀
Then don't buy it 😂
