Imagine a filmed and detailed documentary like this showing us the work, life and experiences of the first exploration of this area by James C Ross in the 1840's, in wooden sailing ships with no electronics or communications.
I get your sentiments but, back then no electronics, film gear = only no hi def details.
Sorry to burst your bubbles, there were people there long before that.
@@rockingchair2807 There were some random sealers and sightings of ice shelves and land but not really a serious exploration of antarctica. Just wanted to find seals and whales no?
@@forceghostanakinskywalker575 that would be a resounding YES by the 10s of thousands if not more. We humans have exploited the flora & fauna of the little blue ball for quite some time and it is about time for us to stop, if not at least slow way the hell down !!!! It will benefit us as much as them.

I love how they touch "unknown" things with their bare hands.
yeah and watch it die slowly in their bare hands after which they can disect it with their bare hands.
And this was exactly the point where I stopped watching in disgust.

20:19... I had a good laugh at all this. If you didn't know they were on a ship, you would have to assume they are all tripping.
20:15 makes it even better
Fear and loading in Las Vegas 🤣🤣🤣
Watching them all maneuvering while the vessel pitches and rolls made me a little home sick from my time in the Navy. The Bering Sea conditions were pretty rough and we'd literally be walking on one wall then the other, as far as 3 feet of the wall bottom and also running down hill then, straining up hill lol, it was so awesome
RIP to Doctor Atkins, Julie is amazing for being so strong
Absolutely, peace to Dr. Atkins. I understand why Julie stayed. After all, what is there to go home to? I would have done the same. Doing what she loves, as he was doing what he loved. Deepest condolences to her.
@@Pashasmom1 Many scientist seem to be of this accord. Science first, God bless them!
Watching this in a 40C heat wave.

Fishing in Antartica seems like going back in the past, all of these things look prehistoric
My deepest condolences to the lady who lost her husband.🌹
@Frank Trudeau really?!?!😒😒
I guess I misspelled the word.
Said it around 23:07
There is a big difference between " your husband has been killed " and " you husband died in an accident "
What a wonderful journey, amazing sea life, thank you for sharing it with us.
OMG! My sincere admiration to not only the ENTIRE Crew... But the Scientist that lost her Husband and true love but decided to remain committed to a critical journey is utterly leaving me in awe... Just AMAZING! You ROCK! My SINCERE condolences to you and the others that lost this person!

I love watching these type of shows when there's a heat wave going on:)
The bravest most sober woman I have ever seen. .God bless you

Such an amazing trip! Antarctica is one place I’d love to visit. Perhaps my illustrations would grace a volume or two.
Thank you! Can't get enough of Antarctica!😘
20:39 look at the way they are walking, its HILARIOUS, and they have tremendous skills staying upright.
Im not even a scientist but i myself would be excited to see what those nets would catch.
That she took the decision not to go back home is amazing, I think her Husband would been proud for that.

Antarctica is a wild place. I was on Deep Freese 75 and spent 9 months down there on the USCG Ice Braker Burton island. Great journey.
Good for you Sir
Strictly curiosity is a little silly but what did you eat? what is day-to-day life like? so curious and really applaud your bravery, and countless others, definitely could not do it..
Actually if you could please could you tell us anything interesting about your trip and anything us ignorants to that area would like to know.. I'm so interested, or message me I'm just really curious as to how it went and what really goes on there, so anything you care to share anything I don't care how long it is. Just whatever y'all did to survive whatever y'all saying whatever y'all felt I don't care anything cuz I'm very interested in a career in that field, if the opportunity were able to present it's self . As stated I'm so impressed with your courage and bravery and determination
God bless
A bittersweet journey for Ms Hall but what an awesome expedition overall! You have to give it up to all of them for their bravery and their intellect and their drive to add to the knowledge base in hopes of preserving precious sea life and ecosystems. Bravo!!!
I'm so sorry Dr. Julie. God bless you ma'am. Prayers for you and family. Kudos to the ship Captain for his kindness and professionalism. Yes the others on the ship were certainly her strength and family in type.

@@kristiennewolfe5520 You're asking us if this is a reality show And you're asking us if we're stupid. I don't get it.
Everything about this was absolutely fascinating. It was heartbreaking that woman lost her husband during the expedition. The thimble-like styrofoam cups from the pressure were so cool! Such a roller coaster of a show. Marine Biologist are during some really awesome and vital work.
Good! I'm glad he is dead! All those innocent animals killed for no reason, I'd have cheered in joy watching that boat sink.
I’m so sorry for your loss Dr, god bless you. What an amazing trip, that was every second so interesting. The captain seemed a really nice chap as well. Great watch, thank you
after killing so many sea creatures I think he got what he deserves.

Go for it! 👍🏾
Go for it girl. If you have dream just chase it. We support you and we would like to see your work.
If you're in the US I can recommend the University of Alaska - I worked as a volunteer there one summer while I was doing my marine bio undergrad in the UK.
They were well equipped, had a really good and comprehensive set of course modules, great field stations, excellent teaching staff - and if polar ecology is your thing, then you're in the right place for it

I'm sad for her YET grateful for her. My condolences to her and her family .
All those incredible fish were alive before the scientists showed up. If you're going to kill something , you better eat it.

Does an international Antarctica treaty right... and there's a fleet of Japanese whaling ships they have in big letters on the side research vessel... they kill hundreds of whales in the Antarctic ocean... under the guise of research... and then openly sell the meat on the Japanese Market...
Then you should feel terrible every time you eat any kind of meat
Amazing dedication in a treacherous sea. Hope their research can help to manage the wonderful sea life for many many generations to enjoy and not to waste or catch unscrupulously
I would have liked to see them set some pots for crustaceans and fish species at different depths. Maybe some hook and line tub setts too.

As an ex deckhand on trawlers,I know only too well what happens to the life on the bottom.Trawling kills everything within the net range,It drags everything along until it"s dead!I"m all for research, but hopefully one day they can design something way better.
Been there, done that, totally agree..
Glad someone first hand says it like it is and 'research' needs to eck off and leave natural ecosystems alone. They do not 'need' us to survive, they've done that for million of years
That's why they limit the time they do so. Then again, you should know that.
@@JoanneSgrignoli yes I realise this, but they also said in that documentary that long line trawling nets trawl that same area certain times of the year,so that means that other people are already doing it.
@@crystalclear7984 Yes, you're right. Not everyone acts responsibly. A sad fact of life.
An incredible educational and beautiful film!
Very great documentary so fascinating!!
The first to have eyes on this creature & the first to kill it!
Why can't they put the caught species in water to keep them alive
Oh my goodness! How did those penguins survive all those hundreds of thousands of years until man got there to help them survive? What a croc.
exactly
@Jack Snow they've gone there to train up the new penguin guards and attach lazers to their fricken heads.....
Notice they drag nets destroying the fragile floor of plants that took a long time to grow just for a study saying we should protect that they just destroyed., keep up the good work humans with big brains and no common sense.
You're right then they take the penguin's food too what a shame to be human... Even I am sad and angered at the same time... Instead of protecting the place... Even they destroy the place and then complains about ice melting.. Even and blames the weather changing? I no wonder the world's climate is changing... Even sad just sad...

I wanted to listen to this as I have understood that there are "structures" located in this area.
It seems that mankind is finding and naming new species of fish just before driving them all to extinction.
and now we found a new specie of fish that has evolved through billions of years of evolution and now we are watching it slowly dying gasping for air and now we have successfully killed it
