So cool that you did this! On their first American tour, our little midwestern bar band opened for them and Foreigner, when they played our town. They were all so nice; Derek was just a hoot, and had the lowest snare drum I've ever seen. Funny thing: even though they were just breaking with "Help Is On the Way" at the time, and Foreigner was the headliner (got to turn the mains all the way up to "10" and use the "star" lights), they totally blew Foreigner (not to mention us) off the stage! They were so tight, and almost seemed to be reading each others' minds, with the way that they flowed. I still stay in touch with Graham and Glenn, and it's absolutely criminal that they're stuck in Australia as "Birtles Shorrock Goble", and a bunch of posers is allowed to market themselves around the world as "LRB"!
The crazy thing about Little River Band is that this isn't even one of their best songs. The instrumentation and harmonies in Reminiscing, Help is on its Way and A Long Way There are sublime. The harmonies of Beeb Birtles, Glenn Shorrock and Graeham Goble are legendary! Very proud that they're Australian 👏 🇦🇺
My friend was sound engineer on one of their albums and he said they would effortlessly perform multi part harmonies at the drop of a hat, masters of their craft 👏👏👏
These guys were very experienced musicians. They cut their teeth in legendary Australian bands such as The Twilights, Axiom, Mississippi and Zoot, going back to the 60's.
Saw them back in the day and they were by far the best sounding band I ever saw Live . Listening to them in concert was like listening to the record . Whoever did their sound setup was a pro . The vocals were not drowned out by the instruments which in a lot of cases it is . The harmonies were spot on also . Pro's all the way around .
They were the Australian Eagles. Their backing vocals were so important to their songs. Wish they could play one more time under the LRB logo. Thanks again Fil.
Remember, in the late 70’s and 80’s they didn’t have in ear monitors to isolate their vocals from each other. Live, how did they keep the harmonies so on key and tight. Just crazy talent!
Passed manager of LRB Glenn Wheatley died yesterday in Melbourne. It was his knowledge of the music industry that allowed him to help the Little River Band become the first Australian group to enjoy consistent commercial and chart success in the US.
Saw LRB at the Yale Bowl with Heart and the Eagles in 1980. So many people couldn't believe how many hits they had. They played song after song that everyone knew. Vastly underrated band.
LRB were pretty much a super group, made up of highly skilled artists from other groups. They already had years of experience. Glenn Shorrock has been lead vocalist in other successful groups too..
I’m an Aussie, so I had to listen to this one. Glenn Shorrock did a cover of Bobby Darin’s Dream Lover back in the late 70s (or early 80s). I actually thought it was a Little River Band song because it was the first version that I ever heard, and it got a lot of airplay on the local radio station. Glenn is still performing….. managed to see him live a few years ago. He is just one of Australia’s icons, who was born in England.
Their best song is “It's a Long Way There”. Too long for radio at 8:39. Has some of the best guitar playing you will ever hear by a guy called Ric Formosa
I’m just listening to John Farnham unauthorised biography and the author it talking about his time LRB. What a coincidence that this video come up when it’s a year old ?? 😊
Fil, you continue to impress me. I'm 73 and I did a lot of studio work for Capitol Records back in the 70's and 80's. Little River Band was always a favorite of mine (not my label). Their music was simple but done with such individual style. I'm a natural Alto and we learned to compensate for the sound because the was no vocal correction in those days. I love what you do, please continue, I have passed it on to all my younger friends.
Housden is a prick. Claims LRB is his band now. There was a court case a few years back when he objected to them touring as the Original LRB. Everyone knows the classic lineup without Housden is the best.
The original LRB was the best IMO. They were amazing live. I saw them at the Sunrise Musical Theater in Ft. Laud back in 1980 and was blown away with the vocals and the guitar work.
Only a few years ago- I was lucky enought to hear Glenn Shorrock sing with just acoustic guitar. He has such an iconic and fabulous voice! Still so much feel and swag. I appreciated his recording performances so much more. They were all fab. Great time in music.
I loved the little River Band. I got to see them in concert. They were a high energy show. The music was so good. Sounded just as good as studio sound. Would love to see them again. Where it ever to be possible.
Legendary band!!! Never seen a band as tight nor as polished as LRB! They were truly Rock & Roll contrary to probably many that may not think so Jaw Dropping! so many super great songs too!
This is my fave Little River Band song, with Playing to Win, when John Farnham was lead singer, my second fave. I'd love to see an analysis done of John Farnham's voice, perhaps on Help! (the Beatles remake), or Chain Reaction.
Very talented band. I saw them live a few times. Glen Shorrock's voice is amazingly versatile. One evening Beeb Birtles was sick and they performed one of his songs. Glen sang the lead that normally Beeb sang. Close your eyes and you would swear it was him. And of course their harmonies with at least 3 brilliant vocalists, are always spot on.
Another great analysis Fil. I was a big fan of the little river band because they had such a clean sound, perfect vocals and harmonies. Their live performance was just as good as their studio performance.
Loved this song and "Cool Change", but never realized they were an Australian Band! What a rocking live performance...close to the recorded version, but even jauntier! Great analysis, too!
I love the song Cool Change and Reminiscing....now it's time for a cool change.....so beautiful ❤️...now that my life is so prearranged now it's time for a cool change....perfect harmony.....makes me close my eyes and relaxes me....love the lyrics... really touches the heart....
The sound check when live thing is one of the reasons Queen rocked Live Aid. They brought their own sound engineers and did a full check before starting. You can easily find it on any extended cut. Most bands just accepted the production's staff, Queen were coming off a tour and didn't mess around.

You must do their live "Its A Long Way There" from the Aussie show Night Moves!! I actually meant a different song. "Days On The Road" is the live song i was talking about. Sensational!

I did too. In Perryville MO. Only I think it was in the early 2000's. Saw them at a little venue or the civic center in Perryville. Talking about a great show.
Thanks Fil. Living in New Zealand, I grew up on LRB, and love every song they ever made. They did a beautiful live performance with Glenn Frey from the Eagles, and sang "Desperado", and vocally, it is phenomenal.
Great little band and wonderful analysis! And sadly another tragic story of how musicians can end up getting "guffed" by management. May the music of the "original classic lineup" of Australia's Little River Band live on!
Great that you're doing this analysis Fil. I saw them play in about 1978 at my university in Melbourne in a smallish hall. Absolutely fantastic. Incredibly tight band with great songs.
Possibly the greatest vocal band in ever. Well at least Glenn Frey said so. They used to spend an entire weekend getting one verse vocally right. My mate was rehearsing in the studio next to them one weekend in London. He was blown away. Eventually their brains new exactly what to sing at all times. They did an acapella version on tv one night. Holy Cow. LRB were well known for a perfect onstage sound. Didn't matter where you walked on stage their foldbacks were perfect.
I remember when this was released summer of '79 instant hit well done it has that timeless vibe to it bringing you right back to that beautiful July summer evening of 1979. They such a great band like you explained!
I'm a huge fan of harmony. i saw them in LV not sure what year. They came out and did a warm up song that I had never heard before. I don't remember what the second song was but they hit some a cappella harmony that gave me chills. Felt like 7 part harmony. They were amazing, as Fil would say, spot on.
In addition to the great harmonies from Glenn, Graham, Beeb and Wayne, they've got one of the best guitar players in the world, Stephen Housden. He's still making music today - check out his band King of Kudos, and his songs with Paula Gomez.
We opened for an iteration of this band, but they were so nice and actually complemented us on how well we did Desperado... they thought we were cheating on our vocals to a track.. they actually called me Don Henley, I was the drummer and one of the lead singers.. I mean, we suck, but they were so kind❤
Saw them in an outdoor venue back in '90s. Those first few notes 'have you heard about..." They blew out the circuit breakers. Twice. A band member asked "are you having a good time?' He nodded and said "We - not so much" Won over everyone in the crowd.
I had the joy of seeing Little River Band in August 1978 as part of an all day outdoor stadium show that included Heart as the headliner. They were fantastic and their harmonies were absolutely glorious. I can't imagine the difficulty in trying to sound check for an outdoor show as it can be challenging enough in many indoor venues, but the sound crew pulled it off with aplomb. I've played in a Celtic Rock band for the past 20 years and I can remember some really difficult rooms we played. The worst has to be a show in a curling rink, where the ceiling was a series of heavy wooden beams supporting the roof, each set about 10 feet apart. Each beam echoed back at us but, because they were spaced apart, the echoes arrived in separate waves so even our monitors were useless from the horrendous noise of the collective sound waves. Picture twenty people playing the same song and you're hearing each one, but each one started the song a half second after the previous one. Our sound guy was have conniptions trying to fix it. He never did. An awful show but it gives us a lot of laughs after the fact
I used to know the guy who wrote that song, David Briggs. He played in another band I’d go see in the early 80’s. I also know one of the other members, once they became LRB.
FANTASTIC Vocals! SUPERB Harmonies! Loved the LRB! They did some great stuff. This performance is musically and vocally Tight tight tight! Thanks Fil! Excellent analysis! 🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦🇨🇦
OMG I love Little River Band! I never knew they were Australian until recently but they do tour here in US and I keep missing them!!! "Cool Change" is my favorite song as well as "Lady".
Another band you've highlighted that was buried in my memory vaults, great content as ever, the vocal harmonies remind me of Crosby Stills Nash and Young
Unfortunately what you will see is a completely different band. Wayne Nelson is the only guy in the former group that is a member in the current touring band. They sound similar but not as good as the original group. I found this out the hard way, I saw them in Florida a couple of years ago. Something was a bit off, after the concert I looked into their very complicated history. It's still a good show, enjoy!
Definitely nothing more than a tribute show.... the man that "stole" the name was not a significant part of the history of the real band. Please enjoy the songs, I wish you could have seen the REAL LRB.
I run sound at my local Church so I know exactly what you are talking about. I can set the board perfectly during rehearsal during the week when there are only half a dozen people in the sanctuary then come Sunday morning everything has changed as more and more people enter it during the service. The musicians, singers, and congregation can't understand why I'm tweaking the board constantly during the service as they don't understand what is happening.
Such a complete analysis! Great performance. I had a Fil concert today. I needed some energy so I put on one of your covers. YT on Apple TV just kept playing another and another! I've never listened to so many of your covers back to back like that. I have a new appreciation of your talent! You are so versatile! (And this time I'm not going to mention how adorable you are!)
Anything by LRB takes me back in time to my youth. They were definitely a Hit Machine! So cool that you appreciate and showcased them. Great take and vid! You're quite the musical scientist!😁👍🏻
Fil, if you want an interesting conversation about those years and the process of making that music, you should contact Graeham and do an interview. He's a fascinating man with so much knowledge about music. A national treasure.
Saw these guys live a few times with the original line up & like so many other Aus bands & performers at that time they were amazing. They all had to be strong performing live from the beginning, that was what the Aus music scene was all about at that time. So many live venues now gone.
Since my last comment, realized just how magnificent ALL the back up vocals are--they all could lead. Love this group in all its forms! Thanks for analysis.
At some stage would love to hear you review other Australian artists Renee Geyer, John Farnham or even artists like those who were part of 1972 Aussie version of “Jesus Christ Superstar” Rock Opera eg Marcia Hines (Mary Magdalene), Trevor White (Jesus), Jon English (Judas) etc.

Glen Frey said that the Little River Band were the best vocal
band in the world.
I was there in Brisbane at the Expo and actually saw Frey play with LRB when he said that. What a fabulous night
Coming from Glenn Frey, that is some compliment.
Frank Sinatra said 'Reminiscing ' was the best song from the 70s.
Lennon also rated it.
@@voxac30withstrat And Shorrock said to Frey after he said it, "Come on mate let's go get a drink".

Sweet- and yes, it is.
YEs, I call the posers a tribute band, not the real LRB.
@@cindyharrington5958 me too cos thats all that are
I saw them live in 84 & Foreigner with Bad Company in 78 or 79. Great times with great music that you don't hear today
It’s bloody disgrace an awesome Aussie band and those fake Aholes use the LRB names.. 😡🇦🇺

Fellow Aussie here. Agree 100% 🇦🇺🇦🇺
This song is fine
My fave was Red Headed Wildflower. Would love to see Fil give a review of that one. Love the LRB, but today BSG is the best act to see live.
Isn`t the bassist American?
My friend was sound engineer on one of their albums and he said they would effortlessly perform multi part harmonies at the drop of a hat, masters of their craft 👏👏👏
Thank you Fil for showing the REAL Little River Band, the Original and Best!
Not quite the bassist and lead are not the originals.

"It's A Long Way There" (long 8 minute+ version) is my personal favorite by these down under lads

Such a SOLID band and you gotta love the harmonies these guys put out!! My favorite LRB song is It's a long way there!!
LRB were phenomenal. Thanks Fil from Oz.
Awesome as always! Thanks Fil.
Have loved this song since it 1st came out! Thank You, Fil
LRB - The first Australian "supergroup".
Anything by LRB takes me back in time to my youth. They were definitely a Hit Machine! So cool that you appreciate and showcased them. Great take and vid! You're quite the musical scientist!😁👍🏻
Wow, flawless. That is impressive.
Oh, man! Haven't heard this song in years. I remember being a kid & hearing those harmonies & singing along with each part to learn them!
Best harmonies in a band I’ve ever heard. Sheer awesomeness!
I always loved this song!
LOVE Little River Band, and I SO MISS festivals and concerts like this- Fleetwood Mac and such!!!!!!-SDK
Fil, I just love your channel! Everytime you hear someone killing it, your smile lights up the room! Thank you for everything 💕
Fil, if you want an interesting conversation about those years and the process of making that music, you should contact Graeham and do an interview. He's a fascinating man with so much knowledge about music. A national treasure.
Excellent Live performance by the Little River Band. love you sound check detail. Testing 123 Fil analysis is spot on! 👍👌🤘
Saw these guys live a few times with the original line up & like so many other Aus bands & performers at that time they were amazing. They all had to be strong performing live from the beginning, that was what the Aus music scene was all about at that time. So many live venues now gone.
They were a great band. I saw them open for Little Feat at Winterland in the late 1970's. One of the best concerts I have ever seen.
Since my last comment, realized just how magnificent ALL the back up vocals are--they all could lead. Love this group in all its forms! Thanks for analysis.
They are were so good live!
One of my faves. The vox. The band. Seen 2 or 3 versions of the band. All great.
Great choice, Fil!! Can you do Night Owls by these guys next! I have always liked the Little River band!!
i have a concert DVD of theirs THEY did in TEXAS in 1988 AND THEY WERE THE BEST AUSTRALIAN BAND EVER and they were VERY SUCCESSFUL in AMERICA
Saw them they were just as good as the studio work . Especially the harmonies.
