My 67yr old mother has been a piano player/teacher and a theory guru for most of her life. I was driving her from Florida to Colorado, and she had never seen your videos, so to pass time we watched your videos and I could see on her face how much joy it brought her to listen to you breaking down the theory and musicality of various pieces. We were able to bond over our shared love of music and theory! She said it felt like we were just 3 music lovers hanging out, listening to music, and talking theory. Thanks Michael!
Any Paradise Valley fans out there?? A lot of folks saying it’s Dead-inspired (which is true) but John’s been playing this style for well over a decade now with a couple albums of his own.
Johns phrasing is some of the best in the world but a lot of people forget that his rhythm feel is just as melting. Glad your ear and reaction bought his rhythm to the front of our focus.
This style of lesson is so valuable for those who are self taught. It’s the discussions with fellow musicians, that I for one have not really ever had, regarding the intricacies of a song that really really allow one to understand the music theory while also cultivating the passion for the art. Great job ❤
These videos were the first to challenge me to think - what is a 3rd, 5th, chord tone, etc. - instead of brushing past the terms, I wanted to "hear" them the way Michael seems to. Fantastic!
Exactly this, well said! Same for me. Personally I've outgrown lessons like the Marty Schwartz style, just a bit too slow for my level where I'm at now. Michael here is perfect for jamming along, discovering new stuff, and feeling like you are in the same room with this great musician.
i agree. players like John Mayer and Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas) are so much more evolved than others. they truly are the masters of the "less is more" concept of guitar playing
What a great song. Zach is such a good songwriter and the fact he got this legend to join in with him makes it incredible. Love your videos. Also, his guitar has kind of a JJ Cale feel to it as well.
@@jeff1872tI’m 60 and been into music forever, all kinds of genres and been to so many great concerts and followed many bands and singer songwriters and I can honestly say Zach is one of the best. He truly has a talent to reach people deeply. Been following him for 4 years, I know every song, even unreleased. So, I definitely know Zach’s music and love it. Music is subjective so what you like I may not and vice versa. I would advise you to go listen to his catalog before replying and making yourself look foolish.
Your love for music is all your face. That’s what music is meant to do. You introduced me to Travis Meadows and I’m very thankful for that. You are a great talent.
I love your videos man and so glad you covered this one. I know you normally do live stuff so thank you for abandoning that for this video and breaking this one down. You getting excited about it gets me excited so kudos my friend. wonderful video for a wonderful song.
20 seconds into the video and straight to the song, no unnecessary jimble talk, just straight to it. Love it man! I always enjoy this quality content. Keep on going like this :)
Thanks UA-cam algo for bringing me to your page. This was fantastic. I've been a Mayer fan for a long time and your appreciation for his playing is fun to watch.
I'm astonished at the sheer volume of music Zach Bryan has and is putting out! He seems like he's not sure how long this thing will last and is trying to make everything of it he possibly can. Ride that wave!
This is a great song and I love the way you teaching the song step by step. Awesome old guitar reefs* Eric Clapton stile spiced testfully with some Jimmi Hendrix cords slides* Congratulation! Thanks
This is great on multiple levels! My daughter is 11 and a huge Zach Bryan fan which i think is awesome she appreciates real music so young. That being said when I showed her this she says..."Who is John Mayer?"😁
That song is so Greatful Dead. Of course with some tasty blues licks but it’s almost as though I hear some Dickey Betts Blue Sky vibe. Cool video dude. Great breakdown of the music.
I'm getting some Allman Bros. and Eagles vibes also. I agree, Zach Bryan is a great songwriter. Something In The Orange is currently in the song rotation for the cover band I play with, I may have to suggest this one too... Keep on putting out the good content bro!
I basically play chords only. Know very little theory and don't know runs or solos or scales. You're way above me in every way, and I love this channel and everything you do. Thanks.
@@andymanjo Sorry man, but I'm totally self-taught with almost no knowledge of theory. I just slow it down and copy finger placement until I'm happy I sound similar enough 😅 Hopefully someone else sees your comment and responds!
“Better Days” reminded me of Paul Butterfield’s band of that name. Reaction suggestion for another studio track, their “Please Send Me Someone to Love” with guitar by the great Amos Garrett.
...isn't it also just Jack Straw, especially where you're talking that great rhythm playing in the middle? Goes from Friend of the Devil to Jack Straw, basically.
If you’re talking about the one at 4:13, I’ve heard that riff used in at least a dozen other songs. Let’s not sit here and act like Jason Isbell invented that riff lol.
@@georgesutton2191 Reading is a skill. I didn't say he invented it. Re-read it. It's the same riff. Just like every I-iv-V riff, it's just there. It is what it is.

First time I remember him going mixolydian is Queen of California back on Born and Raised especially the live version - red rocks is it?
1st track from that album is gold….
Paradise Valley is so slept on as a JM album
Man I love Paradise Valley... Paper doll, who you love
@@neilswherethelightis good call! You are spot on. Love that video!

JM can play over any song in the world. Absolutely fascinating.

My favorite thing about Mayer is how he does more with less than most players do with 100x more.
perfectly said
i agree. players like John Mayer and Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas) are so much more evolved than others. they truly are the masters of the "less is more" concept of guitar playing
John’s Grateful Dead influence is definitely trickling into his other music. Two of my favourite artists ever!
Yeah he's still young is the beauty of it! Im obviously a Jerry guy but what a great choice by the band to bring in "the kid" as Bobby might say!
The fills are very Grateful Dead, and the main solo very much takes him back to the Paradise Valley/Born and Raised days
This oozes the Grateful Dead 💀 it has a kinda friend of the devil vibe Great tune
There's a lot of worse oozes to have
John’s guitar tone is a callback to Paradise Valley
It’s the Duesenberg like the one he used on a couple tracks from there
John Mayer is a perfect country guitar player...you just need to put him the place of a slide guitar!!!
What a great song. Zach is such a good songwriter and the fact he got this legend to join in with him makes it incredible. Love your videos. Also, his guitar has kind of a JJ Cale feel to it as well.
Lol, have you actually paid attention to his lyrics? Good songwriter? lol.

He is on a ridiculous run right now, it'll be interesting to see if he ever drops off, I don't see an end in sight right now.
Man....that was awesome! What a great song and breakdown! I was playing my SE McCarthy right along with you!
Dude just making that guitar SING the last 4 minutes

Zach Bryan and John Mayer. What a great combination.

The solo behind the solo is always my favorite thing about the solo
Beautiful man
JMs playing feels like a nod to his Paradise Valley album, one of his best IMO
John absolutely melting it off the cuff at 9:18 kills me, hahaha. You're so inspiring, bud.
VI IV I aka the They Love Each Other. No surprise there, as I’m pretty sure that’s one of John’s fav dead tunes. So so good
9:11
Saving to learn that bit
12:50 too
What are the chords at that point? 13:20

Tell me Jerry isn’t coursing through John’s veins.
Did you see the video he just dropped for this on his UA-cam? Pretty neat.
“Better Days” reminded me of Paul Butterfield’s band of that name. Reaction suggestion for another studio track, their “Please Send Me Someone to Love” with guitar by the great Amos Garrett.
Hearing Dickey Betts in there a lot too
Background rhythm reminds me a lot of Grateful Dead riffs. Great vibe!
dude the riffing at 12:50 is crazy cool
You go absolutely insane at the end of Oak Island
PLEASE do a whole lesson on your chords with the pentatonic flair! I’m a guitargate premium member!
Dang thats good
That's the prettiest PRS I've ever seen... and that's saying a lot considering they're all gorgeous
He just released a live in studio version on his UA-cam channel. I’d say that’s worth another reaction!
Came on your page to literally say jump on this song…can’t believe I’m too late
OHHHH YAAAAA YES SIR
I dig the hell outta that S2 594! I know PRS is known for their crazy figured tops, but they should do more solid color finishes IMO
this song will make you cry of joy Yamandu Costa - Serelepe (Guitar Concerto Night of 39th Shanghai Spring Inter. Music Festival)
Mayer / Dead mixes with Jason Isbell
10:13 Journey “Lights” vibes.
You should check out the band Wild Rivers. A good song to check out would be thinking bout love, or speak too soon
Hey man! Any chance you could do a lesson on the rhythm soloing and pentatonic inversions ?
Jesus f-ing christ man, palmisano does it again, te lo juro 🎉❤😎
Hmmm, this song has an early Rod Stewart sound to it, especially the guitars.
This is a jam
"i'm so tired of...... The ways of this old world........ wasting it away" Hey driver - Better days
Has similar voicings / sound to cold rain and snow & I know you rider. Weir (we are) everywhere 🫡
what amp you playing through? sounds great
I’m hearing a lot of George Harrison influence actually
my man you really gotta react to classical dragon
Your guitar tone sounds more filled out than usual
I know John plays with the Dead, but this sounds a lot like something Dickie Betts would’ve played.
Would really like to summit a request. How would I go about doing that?
There really is no way to put it, other than that this is a perfect song.
what do you use to do these reactions
...isn't it also just Jack Straw, especially where you're talking that great rhythm playing in the middle? Goes from Friend of the Devil to Jack Straw, basically.
That jump-in by Mayer is literally a riff from Middle Of The Morning by Jason Isbell.
