Are you able to progressively save a layer as a jpeg or png? For example, if I have 5 layers, but I want to save the combination of 3 unhidden layers as a jpeg or png.
@McLovin2021 Mclovin Hey McLovin2021, I don't know if your question has been answered although it was some time ago. I am a bit of a novice as well but when I go to "FILE' on the top menu bar, then scroll down to 'place embedded... or place linked' I am offered the options for images to load into PS. Once I choose said image then click on 'place" it is automatically added to my project as a layer. I hope this works for you as I'm not privy to the methods of different PS versions.
Really helpful and very good pace. Please keep up with these “beginner” videos to help us folks who are struggling and frustrated with this extremely over-engineered and powerful tool. Having multiple ways of doing the same thing just seems to make it that many times more difficult and overwhelming to master the application. Thanks for doing these, look forward to more in the future.
Thank you for the basics! Most videos assume a beginner understands this, thank you for taking the time to explain layers! Masks are another item I would love to understand better. Please continue to explain the basics of Photoshop, it is VERY appreciated!!! Also going slowly helps as well.
It's the third tutorial I watch from you. I've seen tons of tutorials about layers and layer masks, but to be honest, yours are amazingly better, easy to understand. Thanks a lot for your support, patience and the way you like to do it. Thumbs up. 😊
you are such a good tutor. I am 51 and all my life struggled with information. ie I'm so slow. you teach literally like its a kids class. and that is just spot on for me. you are very clear with your information. Thank u. a brilliant demonstration.
I've been using Photoshop for awhile but am by no means an expert so these beginner tutorials are very helpful. Sometimes trying find out how to do the most basic of techniques are the hardest to find help on. Keep 'em coming.
Mr. Smith, yours is the best Photoshop tutorial for beginners I've seen so far. You go at just the right speed, speak clearly, and explain as well as show all the commands that you are executing. You also obviously have a great command of your subject. I'm definitely going to watch the rest of this series. Thank you!
Although I have been "fooling around" in Photoshop for years, I always enjoy watching these beginner tutorials, I learn something each time. Thanks for your time and effort.
I am not a beginner in Photoshop nor am I overly advanced. But I have a lot of friends trying to learn. I think this tutorial was just excellent for the beginner. Clearly illustrates the power and the functionality of layers. Thank you.
Thanks for the tutorial and it was at a great pace. One thing I've learned over the years using Photoshop is sometimes you can get so wrapped up in doing things a certain way that you forget some of the basics--basics which actually make things easier. Keep the tutorials coming!
been using photoshop for years, got into some bad practice, forgot a lot of the basics. Brilliant tutorial, very useful, well paced, just right. Thank you
Your comments are clear and in logical order. Thank you, I learned about merging down - that it only means one layer down, not all of the ones underneath, which I'm assuming would be flattened. Thanks again.
Thanks for the great tutorial. Learning Photoshop can be daunting but your pace and style is extremely helpful. Keep em coming! One step at a time. Thanks again.
Your tutorials are excellent. You go at a pace where beginners can keep up with the process. I’ve watched so many other tutorials and they speed through them which left me lost. I really appreciate your teaching style! Thank you
I am new to PS and have watched several tutorials. Finally I understand the concept of layers thanks to your awesome informative video clip. Very clear to understand and I liked the analogy with the glass sheets being stacked on each other. Excellent!
as someone looking to get into photoshop it's incredibly useful. If i might suggest a video to come, one of the main things I would like to be able to do is take an element from a photo (say a person) crop them out and drop them into another photo
ive been a bit scared of using ps as i dont really understand it.your beginners tutorials have given me the confidence to give it a go.ive subscribed and look forward to watching more and learning lots of new techniques. Thankyou
I only just started learning Photoshop. This video is the best I have seen so far. Both in terms of clarity, level of details and completeness of the coverage of the features. THANK YOU. Looking forward to the other tutorials.
The existing comments here pretty much sum up my thoughts about what you are doing with your "beginner" videos. I have had an uneasy relationship with PS for a long time and have ended up back in LR for my work. But now I am trying to learn to do good real estate interiors. This has brought me back to PS. You explained it in a way that I finally understand. Very helpful. Making progress. Many thanks. Your approach works for me.
I have been watching your tutorials learning and enjoying them very much. You are a great professional tutor unlike some that care more about their external appearance shaving strange beards, wearing kitschy bracelets maky funny faces etc' rather than focus on a clear and smooth go. Your way is the way to go thanks again and you got me as your fan looking forward to your upcoming lessons.
COLIN!!! I love u, man. All of your videos are so relevant, easy to follow, and fun. Thanks for another great approach towards a seemingly confusing topic.
Thanks Colin for the tutorial. It is great for my daughter who wants to learn photoshop. I know Photoshop well but to teach someone is a different story.
Thank you, Colin. I think this is a very good tutorial. I have been using Photoshop, starting with Elements around 12 years ago. Now I'm a camera club officer with the role of advisor and mentor to club members starting to enter club and other contests . I can send them here to get familiar with the basics. I hope you will put these beginner oriented tutorials in their own playlist.
Colin, great job. Thanks. I have used PS for years and wasn’t sure I needed to watch but learned some better/quicker ways to do things. Glad I watched!
This was perfect. It was easy to see where your cursor was going, and you explained what you are doing and why. These turorials are usually a blur of information. PERFECT. Do more.
Everything was amazing and a lot of help. I have been so scared of photoshop in the 4years as a photographer I have pretty much only used Lightroom for editing. Already one video and I already know more than I did 20 minutes ago. Thank you, Collin and I look forward to seeing more beginner tutorials.
Nicely done Colin I've been learning (and relearning) PS for a couple of years. As with all your videos, I've found your explanations are excellent. For me what gets that rating is you don't assume the listener knows everything, i.e. when you make a keystroke you clearly explain what you are doing. I loved the 'step-back' to basics on Layers and picked up several gems. I had never come across an explanation of the Lock row selection items. Brilliant. Thanks so much
Twelve years of frustration, dummy books abandoning ps.....and now I stumble on this....as an old geezer you have given me hope...thanks, keep it simple for the old creatives 👍
Thanks Colin, excellent displaying the 3D layers that i can imagine how the layers show or hide underneath . Best explanation and step by step that you can read the mind of the beginners .
Hello again. Well I don't consider myself an absolute beginner now (possibly just scratching the very surface of intermediate level) but even I wasn't sure until this tutorial, what 'lock transparency' meant! It is actually rather nice to go back to basics so thank you very much for this tutorial.
Excellent beginner tutorial. Wish I'd seen this when I first started working in Photoshop. Look me forever to figure out layers. I find going back to beginner tutorials help reinforce the basics so you can move to more advanced training. Thanks so much!
Thanks for posting "Beginner videos.Starting to try and get to grips with Photoshop, from a complete no nothing perspective. Only comment I would make is you are very clearly showing layer systems and how they work. What I would have liked fror a complete novice is how did the layers and the ones you want get there in the first place. Love your teaching style and pace.
Originally I wasn't going to watch this because I've been using layers for a long time, but I decided to watch anyhow. Dang if I didn't pick up on some things I never knew or had forgotten. Now I'm going to have to watch the other beginner sessions just to see what I've overlooked. Thanks.
I am a "basic" user of Photoshop and this video highlighted things I did not know about layer. You continue learn! Excellent video, will check up on the following videos to catch up.
Thanks. Your way of teaching is really impressive. You have just answered my questions when I work with layers. There are basics that actually have not paid attention to or considered. Very happy your video just popped up for me to watch.
Very much appreciate these beginner tutorials. The more advanced ones are nice too, but there I feel like I'm more replicating what's happening than learning fundamental concepts.
Thank you for your clear and easy deep explanation; please keep on; it's one of the best tutorials on YT!. please consider teaching brush tools & path tools & shape tools in depth; as those need your excellent professional explanation... Also Blending options and convert layer to SMART OBJECT Very appreciated. ONE OF YOUR BEST FEATURE THAT YOU TALK SLOWLY and teaching steps organized well so as any person (that the English language is not mother language) can understand you very well; so important to keep that tone for all future leasons ; I will recommend you for anyone who needs to understand photoshop basics in the right way...
This is cool! I have always found it hard to get my head around photoshop. Since photoshop is such a complex interface with so many commands, I find it difficult to know what process to learn and in what order. BTW I also find that lessons in 15-20 minute chunks are great for my attention span!
I'm not a beginner user, just a not skilled one. I picked up a few things and am glad I watched. I wish I'd found something like this when I started learning Photoshop.
I'm taking Photoshop at Jr College. You are a MUCH Better Instructor. I Learn more from your great tutorials than I do in class! Please keep it up ! Your speed is good. If I Need to I can pause and rewind a bit ! Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words! There are 700 free tuts over at PhotoshopCAFE.com if you are looking for written ones too. I’ll also post a new here on yt weekly
great explanation...it's beginning to make sense!! Love that you've gone to the trouble of adding a link to the written notes TOO! greetings from Dublin
Perfect, a simple and thoroughly detailed explanation that doesn't have me instantly replaying the previous 10 minutes to try and understand what the heck is going on. Thank you and please do more.
Thank you for very informative video. Learned a lot, just right for me, enough information and timings etc. Please keep it up, very good idea for us beginners. THANK YOU.
These are great! Actually beginner level! And good speaking and technical pace, good level of explanation, easy to listen to. Please keep them coming. Thank you so much.
Brilliant! You label this for "beginners", but it is also a great updater. I've used Photoshop since cautiously exploring CS3. So much has changed and I try to keep up with the more "advanced" elements. What I've learned is not so much about layers but about the controls that are now available to manage the work. Keep up the good work, and any more "beginners" work-throughs will be most welcome.
Finally found someone (PS Cafe) who is helping me learn this program. Your videos are very clear and easy to understand. Well done! I will be watching all your tutorials. Big Thank you from me!
Even though I am viewing this two years after it was published it is still relevant. I won't repeat all the good things others have said except to say I agree with them.
Thank you Colin. I was feeling overwhelmed looking at beginner videos then I came across your's. Amazing! You explained all the details as needed. Thank you. I can't wait to watch more. I'm subscribed.
Written notes are here: photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/layers/intro.htm

I can't imagine a beginner finding a better tutorial than this, Colin.
This, so far, has been the best “beginner” tutorial for photoshop I’ve seen. Great pace and voice. I just subscribed.
This was the best explanation of layers I have seen. As a novice, I am looking forward to more "for beginners" content. Thank you

Thanks for being thorough and not skipping over descriptions of what everything does, looks like and where it's found. Perfect.
Best tutorial I've ever seen on layers. Have taken a PS class, read blogs, and THIS video suddenly made it all click! Now I "get" layers! Thank you.
I'm glad to hear it! Get ready for Layer Masks later this week ;)
Nothing happens without the basics first. Great video - really helpful.

Fantastic, not too slow and not too fast, great for me as I have a grasp of Lightroom but not Photoshop. Very easy to listen to and understand.
As a somewhat seasoned user you surprised me with several things I didn't know. I thank you for that.
Ditto...didn't know about the lock transparency!

I’m new to Photoshop and this introduction to layers is just what i was looking for. For me it is clearly explained at just the right pace.
Love these beginners tutorials. Please keep doing more. You're the best teacher on Photoshop. Cheers
Colin, great job. Thanks. I have used PS for years and wasn’t sure I needed to watch but learned some better/quicker ways to do things. Glad I watched!

Perfect pace and detail !!! I may check some of your other tutorials.
Best Explanation of layers I’ve seen. Very clear concise and logical
You are an experienced instructor. You make a difference.
Thank you so much. Being a new user, I've watched a lot of UA-cam videos on layers and yours was the best and most easily understood.
Thanks for explaining LAYERS in simple language and on understanding pace.
Thank you Colin, really simple and easy to follow 👏👏👍
Coln, I forgot to say I was good that you explained the other things like locking the layers which no one else does
