What we take for granted--food, housing, books, jobs--mean so much to some. As a former immigrant in America, I understand this character. However, as a white person, I don't fully feel what Wright must have felt. A memorable book and a thoughtful narration.
Thank you for sharing! Very true. The basic necessities of life don't come easy to many people, including myself. I struggle everyday to survive, so related to this story, too. My best friend immigrated to America from Albania with his family when he was 9, he's also told me many stories of their difficult journey to survive. It's horrible to imagine how much more difficult it must be when people are intentionally abused, oppressed, and discriminated against. I'm grateful creative people like Richard Wright and Peter Francis James have made such efforts to share these stories with the world.
A tale of a man who suffers from double consciousness is what I can relate to coming-of-age in America. Realizing that there are two types of America depending on the individual.
Brilliant memoir. SOOOO disheartening RW's retelling of the in-fighting and counter-revolutionary tactics of both the communist party and Works Progress Administration. No mention of Paul Robeson ... and I'm burning with curiosity to know what did transpire between PR and these groups.
