Wow! It's amazing that you've reviewed this one!! Actually, EXO D.O. (Doh Kyungsoo) was on this. His role was the soldier friend of the firefighter's brother.
His role is clearer in part 2.
I don't know if part 3 of this movie will pull through because I heard that he will be the focus on that one.
These themes of being judged in the afterlife, the life review and levels of hell etc are quite common in people who have near death experiences and astral projections and even “alien” abductions. Actually, in some schools of thought, the entire process of Reincarnation is part of a soul trap to keep human souls from ever escaping a prison like reality.
In the second film, they touch on a metaphysical concept that the captain is experiencing the real hell of living with his guilt. They could have taken it more in that direction but in a way it’s endearing that they stayed true to their high fantasy / Buddhist afterlife plot.

In this video, you mention that the guardians are preventing the reincarnation of the fireman for their own agenda, but that was not the case. The guardians were working hard to get him reincarnated because he is the 48th paragon. They need to help 49 people so that they themselves can get reincarnated. The 2nd movie shows who their 49th and last paragon is. I just watched both movies a few days ago and they are outstanding.

To anyone who is interested in both 'Along With The Gods' and Dante's 'Inferno', I might also suggest Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's adaptation of 'Inferno'. A fun and fascinating read. I recommend the book.
Another point: I can imagine the scenario of Sartre's 'No Exit' as being a 'Hell of the Antisocial'. Any thoughts on this?
