Just found your channel. I've just spent the last 3 weekends cutting my huge privet hedge back, and down. Yes in the rain too. Having to shred the enormous heap of trunks and stems in order to make space on the patio for the top of the hedge. 2 overflowing bulk bags filled and 2 more heaps to shred. Spent 4 hours on Saturday just clearing out the dead twiggy bits and miles of ivy from the base of the hedge. All that squatting and bending and carrying, it was a long workout 😄 At 60 things definitely ache, but very satisfying when it's all done and tidy.
Aww hi and welcome really appreciate you being here Well done for getting out and doing such an amazing job I the rain I’m 41 on the 11th feb and I feel aches and pains all the time doing this job lol Thank you for watching Kathy have a great evening 💚🙌🏼

Nice tidy up job and hopefully a nice new customer too. Cut all the old leaves from the hellebores to make sure they don’t get black spot. I think every year you need to look at your rates you charge so you are still making a good profit. Everything is going up so your rates will as well to keep afloat. Even if it only slightly. Know your worth mate, as I am sure you do. Keep those vids coming. Love them!

Good job mate It’s always hard getting back to it after Christmas!! And it’s meant to rain today😒 I know what you mean about feeling it as you get older. 42 soon😅👍
Hi Pete, Hellebores I always cut foliage back to ground level in February once the flowers are starting to grow. That said mine, because of the mild weather are about 4 inches so I agree to cut them now. The same with the wisteria, February cut everything back to the second bud. Again if the customer says do it now !!! I might explain it would be better to leave it for another few weeks. At the end of the day mother nature knows best.🙏 Dad 👍🍺
The weathers been so wet yet mild meaning everything’s growing earlier The customers are happy and the work gets done to the best of our ability with the time allocated for each job More vids up tomorrow 🙌🏼☺️🍺 Pete
Hey Pete, love the content of you’re videos mate and all your positivity. Great work on the wisteria, always a bit weary of them. With the hellebores if you do trim them up a bit at this time of year the seem to sit up a bit and really makes the flowers more prominent. Keep up the great work mate, Tom.
Great insightful video Pete. Happy New Year to you and family. Yes with the darkness setting in earlier you are up against it working too hard with minimal break to make up for it. (Your health is key) I will see the accountant next week to get an idea of my bill🙃🙈
Fingers crossed for your tax bill hope it’s not too high The dark doesn’t help but we do our very best with the weather and and Mother Nature in general I’ve got Leon now because I’d struggle on my own physically and mentally I tried solo for a short while and just work better with help it takes a lot of pressure off me having the help All the best for the year ahead mate
Ayup mate new to your channel just subscribed really enjoying watching your previous videos, I’m the same age as you and have been a gardener/groundsman for 24yrs , agree with you that some people don’t want to part with a lot of money for gardening work ,but as I always say it’s a never ending job which a lot of graft and effort goes in too keep up the great work all the best Craig
Hi Craig thank you so much for subscribing it means alot bud It can be tough I just try to stay positive and do my very best I enjoy the hard work 💪🏼 Have a great day tomorrow 😊
It’s a bloody hard balance but I’m sure you’ll be fine with the work ethics you have. I’m 51 and feel the pain from being a gardener my dad’s 83 and still a Gardner with pain, it’s a very strenuous job what we do , my advice is to just keep moving 😂
Hi Pete. Happy new year to you. January and February are indeed tough months for the self employed, and even worse if you rely on favourable weather to work. It is very hard to be disciplined with the money we earn, I try and work on the principle of 33% or roughly one third. 33% wages 33% tax and NI 33% to the business for fuel, maintenance, tools etc. With that said, it can be very difficult to stick with it. All the best for the coming year brother Peace and love 🙏
Happy new year hope your keeping well buddy Completely agree it’s very hard to split your money but we have too m Sometimes things do go wrong through a season and you might end up needing some funds but your right you’ve got to be very disciplined with money All the best for 2024 too mate 💚🙌🏼
Back to it then. Making me feel lazy 😂. Was decent weather for the time of year, I've got another week and a half before I go back for the season. Jan tax bill is the worst as it always comes after Xmas in the slower season. Have a good week 👍
Hi jack the weather was better today yesterday we had bad wind and heavy rain we got soaked 😂 I agree with you mate tax bill in January is a killer I don’t know why they don’t just make us pay it in April would make sense I’ll make a shorts of this big job I quoted I’ll pop it up later not sure if I’ll get it tho Have a great rest of the week mate
The tip about the Hyde ranger makes me feel silly, I did 2 today 🤦. Oh well you live and learn. To be fair the customer asked me to. Customers always right... 😂
Don’t stress too much I’m sure it will be ok is just a rule of thumb sometimes you won’t get any flowers the next season Sometimes the customer doesn’t know best lol Thanks for watching mate see you soon bud Pete
@HDGardenCare. The customer isn't always right, it's best to advise the customer of the risks of wrong pruning to cover your self Incase it damages the shrubs. If they still want it done they can't blame you. You may come up against a customer that will. I say from experience.
hi Pete i am glad you put this video up. i just had the same from accountant silly prices i question why do we work at times i think it costs us almost a week a month to go to work with all the running costs and tax etc i keep looking at selling up but what would i do love the work being outside etc i look to invest back into the business with staff or yard up grade but also good to hear your phone is going mine is going also some from quote before Christmas all coming in and as said from last video think have 3 weeks to play before the busy times are back with the work load on 2 days in this week and 2 days finished early as rain its hard always hard at this time it seems more goes out than in but few weeks will be best job again for the season. and a happy new year to you and your family mate
I’ve had the same mate not only is my tax more so this means I need to earn more to pay the tax but then I’ll be punished with more tax because i earn more so a vicious circle We need to be earning millions like our clients lol then we wouldn’t struggle so much it’s not easy being a gardener that works hard but earns little it takes its tole on ur health physically and mentally The UK is a financial mess the working class get poorer and the rich get richer but we’re never going to be rich gardening There’s been loads of times when I’ve sat down with other gardeners and questioned why we bother but I guess we just have to or else it would be worse Personally if I could sell the business here and go and live in Australia and start again I would Happy new year bud work hard and do your very best mate januarys gonna be a tough one
Hi Pete , always get a shock every January when it comes to HMRC … got a small rebate once in all my years trading . Account told me not to spend it as I would need it for next years tax liability. Great earthy content. Cheers Drew in bright but cold south Belfast.
Hi drew how’s it going mate It’s horrible isn’t it you think you’ve saved enough then boom Cheers for watching mate I’ve got a product review video going up tomorrow night Have a great evening mate
Keep pushing on buddy, I have been surprised by the taxman on a couple of occasions, you will get through it and it will all come good. Don't worry about customers not accepting your quotes, you cant please everyone, and some people are still living in the past in regards to labour costs etc. I'm not a gardener, but I run a business and find you content interesting. Keep it up!👍
Hi Lewis thanks for commenting it’s great to here from other tradesmen too I massively appreciate the support I think you hit the nail on the head because they don’t run a trade like us they don’t get it or they do get it and they are just tight with money I surpose it’s how you stay financially comfortable by being tight lol
Those white bags cost me £6/£7 English pounds I’m not sure what that would be in US dollars mate I normally carry a few onboard just incase the customers don’t have anywhere for waste
Good video mate!!! What ladder is that you’re using in the first video? Looks a very good ladder!! Been looking at getting a proper tri pod but that looks decent!
This is a little giant ladder they have a website I might have a link in the description of the video if I don’t I’ll find you one Between these and henchman ladders you won’t go wrong Tripods are great but one size these fold from small to big meaning better for storage in small or big vans Cheers bud hope you’ve been doing well hope the rains not impacting you too much
Make sure you note all of your business expenses to your accountant. I would think that would help to lower your taxable income. I use mileage for my truck for my business instead of expenses on the vehicle, gas, maintenance. I do not know if your taxation system on business in the UK is different than in the US? It's definitely good to have an emergency fund set aside for the hidden, unforseen, and or things to purchase in the future.
Hi Nancy I give them all the information I possibly can they are normally very good so he did say he needs to finalise it so hoping he can work is manic even alittle The tax system in the uk isn’t good it’s the main reason why most of the uk is in such a mess we’ve got more and more people struggling each year it’s more exciting than living
Hello Pete, I also claim my office in my home and expenses that have to do with my office like electric, internet, etc. Don't forget all your equipment for making your videos for your channel. Best of luck to you and have a great day! @@THETATTOOGARDENER83
Trees hedges landscaping perfect time for trees as no leaves prefect time for fencing as floods and storms so buisness atm is through the roof for January
Hi bud that’s cool always stuff to do I’m still busy ish I just lack the daylight hours I’m doing everything bar mowing at the mo Rain isn’t nice tho or this wind roll on spring for the longer days and warmer weather Have a good day tomorrow mate💪🏼
A bigger tax bill means you’ve earned more as a rule ours has gone up but I don’t see it an an issue I see it as progress and more profit…regards the hydrangeas by the book yeah prune after the last frost but times have changed ….. a lot of the old theory is based on colder winters….I always ask the customer what they want me to do as they look messy through winter and often customers say prune in my garden I’d prune them but then I only have to answer to myself in my garden haha always ask the customer same with fuscias
I guess that’s a positive spin on it I’ve worked hard the last few years and made some progress I just didn’t quite expect the figure he gave me but never mind Yeah your right regarding the hydrangeas and frosts we had a few late frosts last year which caught us by surprise so I try to play on the side of caution just incase But as you say sometimes customers might ask if you can cut them earlier and I don’t mind but would rather wait and try to explain the benefits of waiting 😊
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 I’ve never noticed the hydrangeas struggle but you I get if it’s happened to you then best to explain 😀 ours had a decent jump 2 years ago and increases yr on year unless we’ve bought a van so there’s say a 6k offset but that only happens every 4/5 years… more tax more earnings but just gotta to account for it ☺️
Been a self employed gardener since 1989 i don’t tend to do a lot from Christmas when all the leaves have gone till the middle of March when the grass starts to grow.. i’ve mainly found that a lot of new jobs in the winter they tend to be a waste of space and are jobs nobody wants when things are busy basically they want stuff done for nothing
I’ve noticed this trend recent years I hope I make it that long I’m 6 years into my journey so far Not easy in this rain we got drowned again today hardest bit is getting out the van when it’s tipping down but once out we just get on with it Thanks for watching Martin 🙌🏼
Hey mate you can pay your tax monthly im paying all my tax in 7 payments from January to July even tho i can pay it all my accountant set it up its so much easier on your finances 👍🏼
Think I’ll possibly have to have a chat with my account about this if I’m short come end of January I’m just shocked it was as much as it was as I have loads of outgoing expenses and wages on sub contractors and loads more etc Thanks for the tip mate Have a great rest of the week ☺️
Tax bill higher than you thought, so you work hard to pay it, meaning you earn even more, meaning you may more tax. Seems a bit rigged! Before I start sounding like a conspiracy theorist I’ll leave it there 😂 Great vid man
It’s almost like punishing you isn’t it I know people around where I live that could work but don’t because the system pays them to stay home they bring home £3k a month and get all their rent paid Yet we work hard to pay tax then as you say earn more to pay it then get taxed higher the current system is a scam tax isn’t good not at the higher rates we brits have to pay 😫
Prices gotta go up.. £ it's a fine line ain't it? Because I'd rather get the job.. it's tricky. Know your worth and all that.. but you can run the risk of boasting you've a great day rate this and that but never actually see the money because noone wants you you're too expensive 🤣 I think as a rule I'm not really entertaining anything now for less than three digits.. gardening and having a vehicle and tools and all the rest of it.. perhaps it's time for a minimum charge of £100 no matter the job.. unless we're talking small lawns in and out
I was chatting with Damien mr tidy and he said the same minimum £100 charge a visit or else it’s not worth it But you do run the risk of loosing work so it’s a fine line as you say with the smaller jobs
@@christopherlane4583 hi mate it all depends on if you agree an hourly rate with a customer or set price per job mate Another thing to factor in when pricing is a price for just you or if you’ve got a helper in charging for them too and covering your running costs and fuel Are you a gardener too buddy If you look in the description of the video there’s a link for my Instagram I’ll dm you on there regarding money and pricing ☺️
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 I am going to go with that line now when I get an enquiry.. about £100 min charge for general gardening. With the caveat that it is only ever less than that if we're talking in and out mowing and the like
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 Very true, when you're young and green you can get unstuck with that sort of scenario, factoring in for two persons. At least.. what ordinarily happens is the customer will put you on the spot and you nervously blurt out a price. When you get older you handle it more professionally. The thing to say is "I'll need to process and get an estimate over to you in writing, usually an email"

Gardeners are the most underpaid under valued skilled trade going and it’s not right we work just as hard if not harder than some trades it’s a physical job

Great insightful video Pete.
Happy New Year to you and family.
Yes with the darkness setting in earlier you are up against it working too hard with minimal break to make up for it.
(Your health is key)
I will see the accountant next week to get an idea of my bill🙃🙈
Fingers crossed for your tax bill hope it’s not too high
The dark doesn’t help but we do our very best with the weather and and Mother Nature in general
I’ve got Leon now because I’d struggle on my own physically and mentally
I tried solo for a short while and just work better with help it takes a lot of pressure off me having the help
All the best for the year ahead mate
Ayup mate new to your channel just subscribed really enjoying watching your previous videos, I’m the same age as you and have been a gardener/groundsman for 24yrs , agree with you that some people don’t want to part with a lot of money for gardening work ,but as I always say it’s a never ending job which a lot of graft and effort goes in too keep up the great work all the best Craig
Hi Craig thank you so much for subscribing it means alot bud
It can be tough I just try to stay positive and do my very best
I enjoy the hard work 💪🏼
Have a great day tomorrow 😊
It’s a bloody hard balance but I’m sure you’ll be fine with the work ethics you have.
I’m 51 and feel the pain from being a gardener my dad’s 83 and still a Gardner with pain, it’s a very strenuous job what we do , my advice is to just keep moving 😂
Fair play to you and your dad it proves staying fit really helps
It’s hard graft but we do our very best definitely easier when we were younger lol
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 ain’t that the truth 👊 and I have a awesome chiropractor
All the best for the coming year brother
Peace and love
🙏
Happy new year hope your keeping well buddy
Completely agree it’s very hard to split your money but we have too m
Sometimes things do go wrong through a season and you might end up needing some funds but your right you’ve got to be very disciplined with money
All the best for 2024 too mate 💚🙌🏼
Good work mate. Just getting through winter is a challenge 😂😂
It is mate role on the spring and summer longer days meaning I can stretch the work out and not kill myself 😂
Nice video January is a hard month. Just got to keep pushing its a worrying month for myself keep up the great work 👍
Thanks Anthony hang in there bud we’ll get through it
If we can get through January and feb all will be ok ☀️🌦️🤞🏼
@THETATTOOGARDENER83 Thanks I will be doing my very best just hope the weather kind to us.
Back to it then. Making me feel lazy 😂. Was decent weather for the time of year, I've got another week and a half before I go back for the season.
Jan tax bill is the worst as it always comes after Xmas in the slower season. Have a good week 👍
Hi jack the weather was better today yesterday we had bad wind and heavy rain we got soaked 😂
I agree with you mate tax bill in January is a killer I don’t know why they don’t just make us pay it in April would make sense
I’ll make a shorts of this big job I quoted I’ll pop it up later not sure if I’ll get it tho
Have a great rest of the week mate
Often find people are slower to get back on quotes at this time of year.
The tip about the Hyde ranger makes me feel silly, I did 2 today 🤦. Oh well you live and learn. To be fair the customer asked me to. Customers always right... 😂
Don’t stress too much I’m sure it will be ok is just a rule of thumb sometimes you won’t get any flowers the next season
Sometimes the customer doesn’t know best lol
Thanks for watching mate see you soon bud
Pete
I’ve had the same mate not only is my tax more so this means I need to earn more to pay the tax but then I’ll be punished with more tax because i earn more so a vicious circle
We need to be earning millions like our clients lol then we wouldn’t struggle so much it’s not easy being a gardener that works hard but earns little it takes its tole on ur health physically and mentally
The UK is a financial mess the working class get poorer and the rich get richer but we’re never going to be rich gardening
There’s been loads of times when I’ve sat down with other gardeners and questioned why we bother but I guess we just have to or else it would be worse
Personally if I could sell the business here and go and live in Australia and start again I would
Happy new year bud work hard and do your very best mate januarys gonna be a tough one
Hi Pete , always get a shock every January when it comes to HMRC … got a small rebate once in all my years trading .
Account told me not to spend it as I would need it for next years tax liability.
Great earthy content.
Cheers
Drew in bright but cold south Belfast.
Hi drew how’s it going mate
It’s horrible isn’t it you think you’ve saved enough then boom
Cheers for watching mate I’ve got a product review video going up tomorrow night
Have a great evening mate
Hi mate where did you get your ladder from
@@benspring7101 I brought from little giant ladders direct mate
Keep pushing on buddy, I have been surprised by the taxman on a couple of occasions, you will get through it and it will all come good.
Don't worry about customers not accepting your quotes, you cant please everyone, and some people are still living in the past in regards to labour costs etc.
I'm not a gardener, but I run a business and find you content interesting.
Keep it up!👍
Hi Lewis thanks for commenting it’s great to here from other tradesmen too I massively appreciate the support
I think you hit the nail on the head because they don’t run a trade like us they don’t get it or they do get it and they are just tight with money
I surpose it’s how you stay financially comfortable by being tight lol
Taxes! Ugh! Ur right shit happens, money at times is short...i pay quarterly! Ur lawn bages how many do u carry? Cost?
Those white bags cost me £6/£7 English pounds I’m not sure what that would be in US dollars mate
I normally carry a few onboard just incase the customers don’t have anywhere for waste
Good video mate!!! What ladder is that you’re using in the first video? Looks a very good ladder!! Been looking at getting a proper tri pod but that looks decent!
This is a little giant ladder they have a website I might have a link in the description of the video if I don’t I’ll find you one
Between these and henchman ladders you won’t go wrong
Tripods are great but one size these fold from small to big meaning better for storage in small or big vans
Cheers bud hope you’ve been doing well hope the rains not impacting you too much
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 will have to look into it!!!
no I've actually taken off a bit more time this year!! will be back at it next week!!!
Hi Nancy I give them all the information I possibly can they are normally very good so he did say he needs to finalise it so hoping he can work is manic even alittle
The tax system in the uk isn’t good it’s the main reason why most of the uk is in such a mess we’ve got more and more people struggling each year it’s more exciting than living
Hello Pete,
I also claim my office in my home and expenses that have to do with my office like electric, internet, etc. Don't forget all your equipment for making your videos for your channel.
Best of luck to you and have a great day!
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83
Hi mate, where did you buy that ladder?
Hi Neil I brought these from little giant ladders on Google bud great ladders
Trees hedges landscaping perfect time for trees as no leaves prefect time for fencing as floods and storms so buisness atm is through the roof for January
Hi bud that’s cool always stuff to do
I’m still busy ish I just lack the daylight hours I’m doing everything bar mowing at the mo
Rain isn’t nice tho or this wind roll on spring for the longer days and warmer weather
Have a good day tomorrow mate💪🏼
A bigger tax bill means you’ve earned more as a rule ours has gone up but I don’t see it an an issue I see it as progress and more profit…regards the hydrangeas by the book yeah prune after the last frost but times have changed ….. a lot of the old theory is based on colder winters….I always ask the customer what they want me to do as they look messy through winter and often customers say prune in my garden I’d prune them but then I only have to answer to myself in my garden haha always ask the customer same with fuscias
I guess that’s a positive spin on it
I’ve worked hard the last few years and made some progress I just didn’t quite expect the figure he gave me but never mind
Yeah your right regarding the hydrangeas and frosts we had a few late frosts last year which caught us by surprise so I try to play on the side of caution just incase
But as you say sometimes customers might ask if you can cut them earlier and I don’t mind but would rather wait and try to explain the benefits of waiting 😊
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 I’ve never noticed the hydrangeas struggle but you I get if it’s happened to you then best to explain 😀 ours had a decent jump 2 years ago and increases yr on year unless we’ve bought a van so there’s say a 6k offset but that only happens every 4/5 years… more tax more earnings but just gotta to account for it ☺️
I dont get my tax bill till the end of the financial year after i had my books in on April 🤔👍🌲
I’ve always had mine to pay by January 31st then get a second one in July but that’s not too bad then as works mega busy
I’ve noticed this trend recent years
I hope I make it that long I’m 6 years into my journey so far
Not easy in this rain we got drowned again today hardest bit is getting out the van when it’s tipping down but once out we just get on with it
Thanks for watching Martin 🙌🏼
Hey mate you can pay your tax monthly im paying all my tax in 7 payments from January to July even tho i can pay it all my accountant set it up its so much easier on your finances 👍🏼
Think I’ll possibly have to have a chat with my account about this if I’m short come end of January
I’m just shocked it was as much as it was as I have loads of outgoing expenses and wages on sub contractors and loads more etc
Thanks for the tip mate
Have a great rest of the week ☺️
you do need a passive income like sipps or index funds etf
I think now a days you do mate 100%
A passive incomes is the dream especially as we get older
Ps not saying your old but I’m feeling it lol
i think you need to get started but seek financcial advice @@THETATTOOGARDENER83

but pay off debts first @@THETATTOOGARDENER83
Tax bill higher than you thought, so you work hard to pay it, meaning you earn even more, meaning you may more tax. Seems a bit rigged! Before I start sounding like a conspiracy theorist I’ll leave it there 😂 Great vid man
It’s almost like punishing you isn’t it
I know people around where I live that could work but don’t because the system pays them to stay home they bring home £3k a month and get all their rent paid
Yet we work hard to pay tax then as you say earn more to pay it then get taxed higher the current system is a scam tax isn’t good not at the higher rates we brits have to pay 😫
When is your tax bill due?
January 31st and another bit by July
Prices gotta go up.. £ it's a fine line ain't it? Because I'd rather get the job.. it's tricky. Know your worth and all that.. but you can run the risk of boasting you've a great day rate this and that but never actually see the money because noone wants you you're too expensive 🤣 I think as a rule I'm not really entertaining anything now for less than three digits.. gardening and having a vehicle and tools and all the rest of it.. perhaps it's time for a minimum charge of £100 no matter the job.. unless we're talking small lawns in and out
I was chatting with Damien mr tidy and he said the same minimum £100 charge a visit or else it’s not worth it
But you do run the risk of loosing work so it’s a fine line as you say with the smaller jobs
Hi Pete, recently subscribed and liked ur channel loving it.
As u said u were only there for 2 hours tidying etc how do price this?
@@christopherlane4583 hi mate it all depends on if you agree an hourly rate with a customer or set price per job mate
Another thing to factor in when pricing is a price for just you or if you’ve got a helper in charging for them too and covering your running costs and fuel
Are you a gardener too buddy
If you look in the description of the video there’s a link for my Instagram I’ll dm you on there regarding money and pricing ☺️
I want to say pace yourself but i dont think you know how to 😂..
This is very true Graham I do try but always have things to do lol 😂
