    Once again Jakob you swerved me into another purchase. I picked up the 101 this morning, mind you I’ve been really picky with buying outboard gear. Money and fun factor permitting and of course usability. This is my favorite thing I’ve gotten into since actually getting my iPad 2018 11”. This thing is insane! I’m having way more fun with it then the Model Samples I got a couple off months ago and more fun than anything I’ve owned in a very long time. Of course it is great all synced up with the rest of the kit but wow. Stoked. Next will be the 8bit. Ordered it and it’s gonna be here late this month. Thanks again for everything and all the work you continue to do. Sweet!!! 🖤🎶🎵⚡️⚡️⚡️🎛🎚

    Hello again J, I’m a professional pianist and teach at a youth symphony orchestra. I teach jazz piano and combos. Your presentations and explications of synth apps are “awesome” . I don’t like the word awesome but I’m probably close to 2.5 to 3 times your age. I appreciate your videos. I wish my wife would to but she is the only person I’ve ever seen walk out of a Herbie Hancock concert witch I opened for. I was scared to death. There was Herbie and Wayne Shorter within a couple of yards from me. Nevertheless, my Lady cannot sing (if necessary she will sing badly) or play an instrument but she has the best “ear” of anyone I’ve ever met. She will not watch your videos (she’s a straight jazz girl ) ... when Miles Davis recorded Bitches Brew, she broke the album. She’s a strong woman... of color, I get called the “N” word a minimum of 5 times a week. Why is this important? You know that people who are locked into their comfort zone stay there. To paraphrase Herbie Hancock, you play in your comfort zone and make explorations outside of you comfort zone, but the “hip shit” (a quote from Mr Hancock) (directing his hands outward), is out there. It’s what you don’t know that’s very important. So, I want to thank you for your clarity and quality of your walking us through synth apps and hardware. I wish my wife would share this interest but after 35 years I have learned to just say “yes”. Sorry for venting. I’ve haven’t slept for days. A former employer of mine has threatened me with physical violence. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he has brain tumor or the onset of dementia. The music biz is really weird. I, and many others, love your videos. Even senior citizens, like myself, find your walk throughs are the best.

    Ha, love the intro. So funny. Haq, I watch a lot of vids on a lot of varied subject but man, I think you are my favorite UA-camr. I bought an MC-101 a year ago. Just found it dusty under the bed. Hadn’t used it for a year! Just can’t get my head around the workflow. Too many bloody key presses and sub menus. It sounds great but so much easier to compose on iOS GR-16 or Cubasis but I’m going to put a couple of days aside and have another go at learning the workflow.

    The version 1.6 update makes it USB class compliant. Not only that - Roland added audio (4 tracks) output which can now be passed live via USB. This is an awesome change for the DAW users... as to input, well that still needs work and SD card passing. Maybe next rev??

    About the SD card formats... As you found out, anything over 32GB (SDXC) is formatted by default as exFAT. However it's possible to reformat them in a computer as FAT32. On Windows you need a third-party tool (like Rufus) because Windows won't format any partition over 32GB with FAT32. On a Mac you can just reformat them with Disk Utility. Then just create the required folder structure.
    There's a good chance the 101 will read it fine but no guarantees.

    • @ndguardian
      @ndguardian 5 років тому

      Any idea what the max SD card size is on the MC101? I just formatted a 64GB SD card as FAT32 and it doesn't show up in the MC101. :/ I also pinged Roland on this, but haven't gotten an answer back yet.
      Edit: On the Gearslutz forum, someone is saying max size is 32GB. www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-and-electronic-music-production/1277988-roland-mc-707-amp-mc-101-grooveboxes-31.html

    Jakob you are the Truth 🙌🏾.....love all your videos, but Roland could have done a little better with this machine. We are too much in the future for that little screen 😆, I love a lot of gadgets, But this have a lot of little features to learn 🤯. If this was all I had, then I can understand. IPad changed the game for me. Everything you did on that video.....lol we can do it on Launch pad or blocs was instantly🤭👊🏾👌🏽. I hope Roland update the Roland Sp 404 , they keep everything kind of limited.

  • @jonajones4021
    @jonajones4021 5 років тому +2

    Great review .. very in depth as always 👌 The workflow is time consuming I feel .. we all want to create fast in this modern era, technology has evolved magnificently and allowed it to happen .. iOS has taken leaps forward, away from the clunky flow stopping stand alone devices, I came from reel to reel and striping time code to a track to sync up my Atari 540 .. these are fabulous times for creators .. couldn’t Bilbao in Gadget for example have achieved this same result? importing quality samples in a fraction of the time .. leaving room to create and have fun
    Hardware can be great, times have evolved .. I even now take preference with BM3 and Blocswave over Maschine! for rapid ideas and song structure
    Love your content though 🤘

    • @derbinhamler2103
      @derbinhamler2103 5 років тому +1

      Wow, I was thinking the same thoughts. Having watched all of Jakob's very informative videos, I found myself thinking how klunky the workflow on the new Roland device is compared to say Korg Gadget combined with a Nanokey Studio or Beatmaker 3 or iMPC Pro 2. The only devices I have seen that come close to the fun workflow of IOS apps. is the OP-1 and OP-Z. Teenage Engineering, to their credit, have made sure both devices integrate really well with IOS. Roland is stuck in the past and keep releasing gimmicky rehashes of past products. Their lack of innovation is really puzzling.

      The setup for the iPad minis in this video is very basic as I couldn’t find my other mallet interfaces for them. So I’m this video I’m just using the internal iPad michrophones to pick up audio. The apps I’m using are “Analyser & Tuner AUv3 Plug-in” by 4pockets and I’m also using an app called “Oscilloscope” by Onyx Apps, however I don’t recomend the Oscilloscope app and I made a whole video about the “why” of it: ua-cam.com/video/MVHrp16Z4m0/v-deo.html

      @mochiboy420 5 років тому

      Not so certain you can. I’ve only had the 101 about a week, but haven’t found any option for setting samples as one shots or a way to modify a single drum sample’s envelope. Not even an easy way to edit note length in the drum sequencer. The only way I’ve found is to live record and hold the pad down long enough so that the entire sample plays. I would love to be wrong, though.

    • @mochiboy420
      @mochiboy420 5 років тому

      Yes, I’m aware how to do that. I’m talking about when you import your own samples to be used on a drum track... there is no option to sequence them as “one shots” and longer samples (like crash cymbals) get cut off when you sequence them grid style with no easy way to edit note length (that I’ve found) in a drum sequence. The only work around I’ve found is live step recording the longer imported sounds.

    Hi ! Can you sample a hole song ? Like a hole beat from a song to play along with a guitar?

    Are you able to export projects as audio and MIDI from the MC101?

      They seem to have implemented audio export with the v1.7 firmware update. ua-cam.com/video/YIuziZU2Bv8/v-deo.html (check around 09m 50s).

    You could format an sd cards as big as 8TB if they made one, as fat32.
    The only limitation of fat 32 is data over 4096MB (4GB)each file size. But I very much doubt your gonna use a sample that's 4gb in size.
    Just reformat in pc or mac.

    Just got mine yesterday. I don’t have a computer (I’m an iOS user) and the iPad/iPhone is the only way I’ll be able to upload samples...so thanks for this and any future iOS/101 tips

    A lot of drum tracks and so on, but you still only get 4 channels streamed to the computer right?

    Poor UI on the MC-101. You did a good job, but... clunky is clunky.

      Turns out that there is a way of pre-viewing the sound by triggering samples with the [SOUND] button while scrolling through them. But there’s no way of previewing samples with sequences running. You have to select and load them in order for them to be sequenced.

    This seems really expensive for what it is - any idea how much it’s big brother will be? I’m guessing it’ll probably be around 800 or so?
    Hope to hell not as if these were a bit cheaper so many more would sell. After all it’s Grooveboxs and isn’t the idea of a Groovebox supposed to be easy to use, easy to knock out beats on the fly any also accessible to most who want to get into or are into this thing?
    I dunno, don’t get me wrong - I’m hardly tight on the purse strings - must have spent around 3,000 alone on gadgets and portable bits n bobs in the last year - not including the synths, Reloop decks and a whole new monitor system.
    This just seems a little over priced for it to be mainstream.

    That no saving individual kits thing is 100% deal-breaker on this MC 101 & 707 series. That single lack of feature has killed my interest in buying one.
