    samplers have a limit and that limit is polyphony… but not in the strict, technical sense... let me explain.
    when I say polyphony, I actually mean the ability to play CHORDS! see, in order to play back chords on samplers, you have to, well, sample a chord. and you can then transpose it chromatically and play it that way. but the intervals between notes stay the same. you’re stuck with it. It’s like playing a song on guitar using only bar chords.
    the Roland MC-101, on the other hand, has none of these problems... it has up to 128 voices of polyphony, and a special feature that makes chord building an absolute breeze. also, technically, it IS a sampler...?!
    today, we're talking about my personal favourite feature of the Roland MC101: CHORD DESIGNER. with chord designer you can create and store 50+ 4-note chords, choosing a Key, Scale and Interval. you can transpose one chord shape up and down the keyboard as well as create completely different chords and store them as you please. once you record them in the sequencer, you can also edit these chords, create inversions and add extensions.
    I don't get why more people aren't talking about chord designer - I find it extremely useful in my dawless setup!

    Thank you. I didn't know this function on the MC-101. Another string on the MC-101's amazing bow!!!
    EDIT: I have just spent a few hours exploring the Chord Designer and it is so powerful. If anyone thinks they need the Aira J-6, S-1, T-8..... think again - the MC-101 has it all ( and more ) under the hood and the more you explore the MC-101 the better it gets.

    Great video, as always. Thanks! It's so funny that you talk about this synth as "low price" when in my country costs three full months of salary (and credit cards are no option because of interest). But your videos are inspiring enough to make music whit the things you have and having a good time, right? Have a nice day!

      dude, what a powerful and humbling comment this is. you're right. I should have said "comparatively low price", meaning relatively to machines by other brands. I'm super glad you still found the video inspiring though, thank you, I'll try to do better!

      You know, it’s quite pricey for a groovebox. However you can get two cheaper and easier to use boxes for like 200-250$ total. Making grooves is gear independent skill. Hopefully you’ll find your dream machine without breaking the bank

      @@HotStrange it’s very well stuffed indeed, however, it’s not only features that matter, it’s also important how easy and quickly they are accessible, how fast you get the result. Menu diving and tight UI probably is the biggest con. I even think i’d sacrificed part of features for more fluent workflow. But i really like the size, mobility, clips, configurable performance fx mode aka stutter

    Nice video! I agree the ability to freely play chords makes the 101 a surprisingly unique option in the tabletop groovebox space. I’ve always felt super limited by stuff like the electron and polyend boxes and even the circuits because they struggle with it. It also benefits a lot from an external keyboard, where you can intuitively record the velocity and microtiming of each note. Nice jam at the end, looking forward to more mc-101 videos.

    Problem is samples are other peoples work! I'd never use them as I feel its cheating but one shots aren't to bad. I know that's not the case I just think if your going to make original music make it all from scratch and with today's VSTs there's no reason you cant. For DAWless jams I have a Roland JD-08 Roland TR-08 and a Roland Bassline for some squelch...

    • @BIGUMAMI
      @BIGUMAMI  7 місяців тому +1

      I have to disagree. people don't sample because it's easier, or because they don't have enough plugins. they do it because it's fun, and it opens up creative pathways that would've never occurred to either the original composer or the current one.
      of course any commercial release must also clear the sample, which obviously entails giving the original author a percentage. it's a very different proposition than straight up plagiarising someone.

    • @NathanChisholm041

      @@BIGUMAMI I guess so. I must admit i do have a Splice account but mostly use the VST plugins but have been tempted to uses some off their samples. 🙂

    • @JACKSTAY
      @JACKSTAY 3 місяці тому

      Samples are not stealing, unless you’re pulling a jack harlow and just putting a drum loop over a looped part of another song (and even then he’s still helping the original artist get paid again for a song that came out nearly 30 years ago). If you’re rearranging the parts, resampling, modifying the sound in a meaningful way, then you’re iterating. Most artists that work with samples are really open about who/what they are sampling, and I’ve discovered tons of music I would have never come across.
      Only corporations and snobby elitists push those “rules”, us musician folk don’t need those vibes around. Don’t be afraid to try literally anything. Rules don’t exist, just learn every technique you can, sampling included.
      Sampling gang 4eva, much love! ❤
