I bought a rooted raven zz cutting and it took 18 months to start showing growth but I'm so excited to see it finally show a lime green stem. The colors are awesome. Was worth the wait.

When I was little my grandma had just come out of running her own greenhouse. The way she dealt with pests of any type was to put the plants in trash bags and spray inside with raid and leave it over night. Outside of my using hydrogen peroxide, this is basically what I do, except since I've got big plants I put them all in the center of the room (away from pets!) spray the top of the soil and then kinda fog around them and cover with an old sheet for the night. Surprisingly, I haven't even made the fiddles mad doing this yet, so for me this is the most effective way and seems to work fairly long term between treatments! I use the house and garden raid. I wish I had done it sooner when I was being tortured by thousands of fungus gnats last spring.
She also would reuse soil and would put it in the oven on baking sheets to help kill off any yuckies, then add nutrients back with fertilizer. With the number of pants she had that made sense. I haven't done it but I don't have rooms of seedlings 🩷

was looking for advice about my sad, dying zz raven and 6 min in you solved my problem!! My plant has been sitting in direct sunlight for the past week or so because i’m in the process of moving out & forgot about it. It rapidly declined in health this month because of that, and i never made the connection about over-saturating it with sunlight until this video. I’m glad i found this video, thank you!!!! 💚💚🌿🌿

I planted some epi pinnatum with my Raven zz so I can tell when the soil is dry easily (and to hasten the drying process as well. When the pinnatum leaves in the pot start drooping, I wait 1 more week then I fully bottom water the pot. It shot out 5 new stems this month after pruning 2 stems.
It got some root rot/dessication last January and the stems became super wrinkled and indented, that's when I planted the pinnatum in the pot, and started bottom watering to also prevent root dessication/uneven watering. No issues since then and stems are plump and firm again. :)

I have a Raven ZZ which, for over two years, had just been sitting there, no signs of growth. About two months ago she finally has four new shoots! They’re quite lovely.
I have a “regular” ZZ which I’ve been struggling to get to thrive; I think I’ve been underwatering her for of overwatering. I’ll have to pay more attention.

With PON I can't tell if it's moist, so I've been watering once every 25-30 days with a post-it note reminding me, stems are not showing dry) I really enjoy my Raven, Chameleon, and a Variegated leaf props (that finally started popping up) (All in PON). I started my Chameleon and Raven leaf props MONTHS ago in moss. Seeing the small rhyzomes but afraid of taking the next step.

Ravens can definitely test your patience!
I've had mine for 4 years now; it had 6 stalks when I bought it, lost 3 over the first year, did nothing over year 2 and grew one new stalk year 3....
Now, spring of year 4, it has 2 new stalks growing! I was thrilled at that until I realised that I probably would have to repot it this summer...
Ravens really don't like to be disturbed. 😮
Now I'm thinking that maybe I'll wait a year, or two, before I repot it. 😂

Winter growth for ZZ has always been my experience too. I think it's in their DNA that they are living on the other side of the world! I love ZZs and have quite a few. I have tried propagating and agree with you. Too long, lost interest! If you really want to see some growth, put it outside in the summer in a semi-shaded or filtered sun location. They love the heat of summer. Just be prepared they will turn into monsters! Unlike indoors, I water them ever singly day when they are outside. Indoors I do the same as you, water thoroughly then no water for about a month.

Put your cuttings in moist potting soil. Covering them will give them humidity. Give them warmth from the bottom and a grow light. Feed them nutrients after they develop roots or a rhizome. Your cuttings will thrive under those conditions.

I’m so jealous. My Raven ZZ has done NOTHING. I’ve had it over a year now, and I don’t think it’s grown a leaf! On the flip side, it hasn’t lost a leaf either… just sat there. I’ve increased light, decreased watering, I guess my only other attempt is to repot it and see if that’ll spur some growth.

    • @MarisaAndChew
      @MarisaAndChew Рік тому

I've heard that with ZZ you kinda need to make them think they are in danger of dying to get any activity. Once I heard this I started to just water my regular zz when the moisture meter was around 2. Then a thorough water and then ignore again. I've got two new shoots finally. Mine had a lot of die back initially and I lost all the original leaves so I'm pretty sure I was loving it to death 😬 despite the lack of growth on top it's becoming difficult to find a spot I can wiggle the moisture meter in which tells me that the rhizomes are growing under the soil. I don't have a raven yet, I have only seen them online and they're like 50 dollars plus shipping so I am waiting to see one in store. Recently I found a philodendron pink princess at the grocery store so I'm sure the ZZ Raven is on its way! 🩷

@@krisfarnsworth620 in in Canada but I live in a small town, we don't even have a Walmart Supercenter, just a basic one, and they rarely bring in houseplants. The home type stores also don't bring in house plants often, just bedding plants. So I either have to order online, or risk boutique prices 😱 or wait for the nursery to open in the spring and see what they have for inside plants, they close through winter. I could drive 3 hours one way to the city and have a lot of options and big box stores but inventory is not guaranteed and with gas prices the way they are, and then needing to eat etc it would prob be cheaper to not spend a whole day looking for a plant in the city 🤣

When I repot them, should I remove as much cocoa coir as I can, or place it all in the larger pot with newer, better soil around it? I've heard it's not good to grow them in 100% cocoa coir, is this true? My many other ZZ plants are potted in a mixture of potting soil, bark, and perlite and do great.
