- Making this Cheap underfloor heating system happen was not too hard and in this video I finish off the plumbing connections. In the previous video I made one good kerosene burner from 3 broken burners. The boiler on this system is a 20 years Grant Multipass but only had 3 years of use. I connect the filling valves and a 2 port valve for the hot water. On this system which is housed in my shed but heating the adjacent building here is a 300 litre hot water storage tank and the boiler is rated at 26Kw boiler ( 90K btu ). Filling and running the system in the next video. Cheers Gerry

Easily one of my favourite channels on UA-cam! 2nd year plumbing apprenticeship up here in Donegal and this channel is great help! 🛠 Keep up the great work!👍
Great video Gerry. I love your channel.
Have to say Gerry, your plumbing skills are awesome. Everything looks uniform and neatly done. Great job my friend.
I love your Dog 🐕 Gerry!.. perhaps could star in some upcoming vids??
Thanks Nigel. She's a quiet dog but loves to be involved in what ever is going on. Will ask her if she will be in another video soon😜Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry
3:46 wrong direction...
Hi. Sorin well spotted Cheers Gerry 😜 👍👍
Yay, a dog cameo!
I don't enjoy plumbing, but that's partly because I'm worried I will do it wrongly - watching more experienced people do it gives me some confidence... I mainly try to use solder fittings, because I'm familiar with hot metal (I do a bunch of electronics/metalworking) and I am more confident I can make them leak-free than screw fittings :-)
Thanks Alaric for taking the time to comment. Solder fittings can take a bit of skill to get right so well done on getting proficient. Thanks for taking the time to comment Much appreciated. Cheers Gerry 👍👍
Couple of observations 1) The blue expansion tank should be located at the point of no pressure change, behind the primary boiler pump. Always 'pump away' from an expansion tank. 2) There's no hydronic separation between the mixing circuit and the boiler primary loop. The mixing circuit should be served by two closely spaced tees, off the boiler primary loop. Never pump "into" a mixing valve. That boiler return pump and the mixing circuit pump are effectively working in series, which can lead to all sorts of problems.
The foam may be asbestos. Please work with a respirator when working with this.
Nice Job Gerry, nothing like digging through what you have to make it work. Do you need to put a backflow preventer on that feed line in Ireland, I'd have to put at least a Watts 9d on there in the old days. Now a days I'm not sure but it's usually a ASSE 1013 on everything.
Hi Michael I just have a double non return valve and 2 ball valves on the system for filling and the loop gets disconnected once the system is at pressure. Had a look at the asse 1013 and they are not used here on domestic. I fired up the boiler and commissioned the underfloor heating system and it's working like new. Next year I will change this boiler for an Air source heat pump but for now I managed to get this working great for very little money. Great to hear for you Michael Cheers Gerry 👍👍
I like your new video today you did a really good jop today good jop look really good
Thanks Travis for commenting Cheers Gerry 👍👍
Good morning too you have a good day today
Bit complected to me to me Gerry but love watching your videos.
Thanks Samsoncandy for taking the time to comment and it's great you like the videos Cheers Gerry 👍👍
Is the circulating pump not on the return 🤔, if so motorised valve facing wrong way😉
Definitely thumbs up Gerry. New plumbing I liked to install. Some of the old plumbing can be a nightmare. Cheers!
Doc
Hi Martin. I will show the sysstem running with the manifold, controls and pumps soon. It's working extremely well which is a great result from an old boiler and rebuilt burner. Lots of political maneuverings on your side of the Atlantic. As always thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry 👍
@@GerrysDiy maybe you can explain, if you have time, in your next video, how to flush the system. Many here have hot water heater failure due to hard water.
Cheers!
Great Videos Gary, just a quick question to one of your other videos, just curious as to why you dont use a damper valve in your stack pipe? Just a plate u can adjust to stop more heat from going up the chimney stack?
Hi John. The reason I don't use dampers is that I need the flue gases to travel fast for mixing and if I slow the exhausst (flue) it will have the same effect on the input (burn chamber) To recover more of the heat I could use more flue in the building or run the exhaust through a heat recovery unit. Hope this makes sense Cheers Gerry 👍
Hi Gerry, greetings from Cork, love your videos, I have just built a waste oil stove from a propane tank using similar design to yours. It works great except for the smoke from the stack, it is fairly thick. Any advice on how to get it to burn cleaner?
Hi Sean. It depends on which vrsion you are working on. Generally increasing the air will sort out the smoke. Is your flue big enough diameter and long enough. Are you using a powered fan assisted or normally aspirated version. Will try and help Cheers Gerry
@@GerrysDiy thanks for your reply. I am using 6 inch flexi flue and have about 4 metres of it with a couple of 90 bends in it. Its temporary to see how it goes. Planning to have approx 10to 12m long with 6m running close to horizontal. Not using a fan.
Do you have any ideas on how to burn bad gasoline in an outdoor environment.
Looks too complicated to me. Ditch it all and move here to Australia, you don't need under floor heating here mate.
Hi Mick. Woud love to ditch Ireland and try Oz for the entire winter here. I see it a couple of weeks ago some parts got to 42 degrees C. A llittle too toasty for me that day but I'd sooner be too hot than freezing my ass off 😜 Great comment Cheers Gerry 👍👍
@@GerrysDiy Yea I'm in Sydney and it got up to 41 c here. Instead of chasing heat in the winter you'd be chasing cold in the summer.
Don't you need in ceiling cooling though?
@ellenorbjornsdottir1166 No, you just have to build the house rite in the first place. Double brick and good insulation, shading on the northern walls.
Gerry: Were you from the USA? You seem to have an American Accent. The Video you posted indicates its from Ireland.
Hi Guy Tech. The video was made at my home here in Ireland. I am Irish but I have a talent for hiden accents 😜 Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry
@@GerrysDiy OK. No worries & thanks for sharing your videos. I know of a couple of people born & raised in the US and then moved to Ireland.
He does not sound American at all! He is Irish and sounds Irish.
Why not have waist oil to heat wate.
Hi Celtic Bear. It is very possible to run it on waste oil. I will use one of the burners that I rebuilt in the last video as the base for a conversion soon. Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry👍👍
Gerry I think you gave me a kick in the ass to do my own shed. Retired with plenty of fittings and copper. Plumbers delight, old school. Enjoyed your video.
Cheap ??? I saw nothing cheap about what u were doing..... Nice , yes ! most ppl don't have cordless compression tools nor numerous fittings and copper or good used boilers laying around so , maybe ur title could be a bit misleading.... Other than that nice job as usual !
Hi D S. Normally plumbing and wiring of a complete heating and plumbing system would cost well over 8k. The recycled boiler is old and free and collected as scrap, The burner I rebuilt in the last video for free and the 300 litre hot water cylinder / tank is 12 years old and also free. The 2 pumps on the heating system again were old / not working and replaced and I brought them home for free. As I said in the video I had all the pipe and fittings too. All I bought was a thermostat £18 and an underfloor heating manifold for £66 on amazon, Underfloor heating pipe is about 70 euro for 100 metres of 16mm and I used 2 coils on the heating system. The Press tool could be rented and with all the recycled parts this job worked out cheap for me. Appreciate that this is not available for everyone but I am just sharing how I did it. Thanks for the comment Cheers Gerry. 👍
The prices on underfloor heating are insane. I had leftover pex pipe when I was about to connect my underfloor heating but I saw that my pipe could only take 90c so I went for copper...maybe pex would have been fine?
@Markus T Hi Markus. Generally pex al pex multilayer is great for underfloor and some are now rated for domestic water as well. The slab / floor is heated to a lower termperature than radiators. Copper is great for piping up domestic hot water and boilers but can be changed over to pex for the runs. In the next video I will show the area I heated and the complete setup. I am renovating the building beside the shed and doing all the work myself. Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry 👍👍 Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry
Call a real plumber, one massive mistake that will cause all kinds of problems, never mind all the crazy small ones.
