I've taken test ride at their Bangalore experience center. So here are my observations.
1) The scooter is a beauty. Clean, functional, and minimalistic design. It seems Ather wants to be Apple of automobile.
2) The spec sheetsays 118KG but it actually feels feather light thanks to even weight distribution on front and rear, left and right.
3) The underseat storage is huge.
4) The digital touchpad console is great. The navigation feature is the best I've seen. It's google maps on big screen.
5) There are no vibrations what so ever at any speed/idle. Absolutely zero. There is no unwanted noise either. Not even chain noise as it uses belt drive.
6) The electric motor makes a whizzling sound while picking up speed from standstill. It's enough to make itself audible for others
on the road. The sound actually reduces once you reach some 20kmph.
7) Suspension is something to experience. It's unbelievable. They've somehow achieved best of both comfort and handling. It's absolute quiet. I've not heard any thud sound when it goes over pothole/speed hump.
8) The 20NM torque that is available right from the word go, makes it exciting to ride. It has to be experienced.
Over all, I've thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It's not a regular scooter with electric power. It's a completely different mechanical product and that's where it shines through. The symmetry in weight distribution, plush suspension, absence of any sort of vibrations all together makes it a new experience. 20NM electric torque adds to the thrill. I believe the premium we're paying is worth it considering the below.
1) I've taken test ride of Aprilia 150 before this. The most fun petrol scooter currently. 85K onroad. You can feel the vibrations in your palms at idle. no rear disc break. sounds harsh. Most importantly you'll feel underwhelmed by it even if you're used to a regular 150cc motor cycle like Pulsar. For Ather 450, you're paying 1.25L which gets you double the fun, one year power bill reimbursed.
Now the Cons:
1) The pricing model isn't pay per use. After initial one year you've to pay INR 10,000- per year for Ather subscription which covers power bill, data charges, road side assistance, and probably insurance. Everything is fine except the power/fuel component. I would be happy if they keep powerbills out of subscription charge. They can make grid chargeable and reduce the subscription charge.
Problem with current model is that one who rides 100km a day and one who rides 10km a day, both going to pay same amount which is unfair.
Wishlist:
1) Range is satisfactory considering the torque. But it would be a killer feature if the power vs range trade off can be customized by user through the touchpad console.
I'm not sure if it's technically possible.
2) The scooter has GPS module built in. But I'm not sure if it has an anti theft mechanism. It would be great if I can locate the scooter on ather app in real time.
3) I'm eagerly looking forward to Ather's new products in pipeline. Hopefully they'll have a product in every other two wheeler segment keeping the same high mechanical standards, and may be a four wheeler too. It's a long way ahead and we've a capable company that can become an Indian Tesla and a profitable one at that.
Based on my TCO analysis given below: the Ather 450 is about 37000 rupees more expensive than a popular scooter like Honda Activa 125 if you are owning it for a period of 3 years with petrol prices remaining at 71 rupees. The Ather 340 is about 21732 rupees more expensive for the same comparison.
That said electric vehicles last a lot longer because they have more direct transmission and durable motor compared to their fuel burning counterparts. The Ather bike looked very well engineered with an aluminum composite light weight chassis with carbon fiber composite reinforced direct belt drive transmission. This thing is built to last. They use Lithium Ion battery technology which is the current cutting edge in battery technology. The pack seems to be well integrated into the chassis, and acts as an integral member.This battery cannot be stolen (as some user commented). You have to cut open the bike to do it without proper tools.
And from the ride videos, it seems this battery pack has a computer controlled battery management and cooling system. The cooling fan noise was audible at times. That means the battery pack will have a longer life span. They claim that it will loose only about 20% of the capacity in 3-4 years (This is a worst case scenario). As far the issue of charging every day, it will not consume electricity when connected to charger. This is only for balancing the battery charge and the computer will do it automatically. So they ask you to connect to charger everyday. Just like your mobile phone. If you leave it in storage the battery life is affected.
The aluminum chassis is space age and 3d printed thus making it a class apart. The design follows a biology inspired dynamic form. There is a lot of engineering innovation going into this bike. It has telescopic front suspension (The Honda Activa uses a more conventional swing arm suspension which has tendency to dive forward during hard braking). It has disk brakes both front and back.
As a standard Aam admi buyer this will all translate into a very well mannered bike which would ride more like a motor bike than a scooter. That means zipping around in the city will be easy. The low CG due to the position of the motor and the battery pack would really provide good ground traction and turning behavior. The dual disk braking will give fast instantaneous braking and will not suffer brake fade. Better stopping is of course more safety.
Finally, you will not be a polluting vehicle to our already polluting urban traffic. Think of the cost of pollution in our cities like Delhi and Bangalore. You will have the badge of being a responsible citizen. I am not supporting Ather technologies nor in any way representing them, this was my primary motivation for this analysis and I may buy one. Though I prefer cycling :-)

On the con side, Atherenergy is a new company and is bringing an unproven product into the market. As per my TCO analysis you will have to own this bike for about 3-4 years of ride around 38000 km to have a cost of ownership similar to the Honda Activa 125. The more mileage you have on the scooter the better the TCO is in comparison. That means this company should be in business and spare parts available for at least more than 5 years. The risk is the depreciation aspect of this scooter.
Also, a country wide fast charging network should happen with coverage. In a country like India fraught with logistic and policy inefficiencies this can be the Achilles heel. Ather is relatively small firm with limited experience and economic muscle.
But electric technology is future and as more and more manufacturers will move in this direction. The government is also under pressure to move towards more ecologically sustainable transportation.

What is the price of the scooter
I m using hero flash from last 15 months and it still gives milage of 50 km + and obviously cost is one of the most important factor... hero flash cost rs 24000 only.
There is a major difference in speed. 25km/hr is too slow.
MotorOctane correct Rajat...but in Okinawa praise you get better speed....and also in hero flash speed is 35...
Okinawa praise is 65000 and use very heavy(78 kg) lead acid battery needs replacement every 2 year.
That's the point you guys are missing.. Even the Li-ion batter of ATher needs to be changed in 3/4 years. If you consider battery replacement cost, it's too expensive. Also they say you have to charge it almost daily even if you are not using it much, which is very ridiculous.

In indian monsoon we get water collect till knee height and high humidity so will this have an impact on battery and other electronics also will we get the parts easily in maharashtra pune city in case of slips falls accidents etc
Good product but I’m not interested coz of 2 main reasons.
1) Cost
2) Range
What will help is something that’s around 150-200 km range because the present range is very very low

People buy motorcycle or cars if they travel such a large distance daily
Daily scooter use for majority people is just 20kms

Hi I have nightmare about e bikes .because we had outlet of e bike . And we closed it because of their disadvantage .. its not reliable its life is over when battery time over .. during new it give pickup after many months it will drop out and replacement of battery cost is same of petrol rate when totalled
@@anirudhhhh can you tell at what speed we have to drive to get that range. May be only 25kmph. I feel when ever any electric vehicle say its range they should tell speed they have to drive to get that range. We want a scooter which can give 100km range while driving at 50kmph.

1.I am middle class person and I travel app.160km daily.
2.I travel at a speed of 60 to 70 km/h range 200km.
3.I expect price range app.80 to 85 and it will be very competative
Because middle class people with husband,wife and one child seat capacity will buy this bike in large numbers in my opinion to save money(it is main reason)but one small family must fit on this bike seat it's important.we does not need sporty look we need to save money.if this company can provide these spec. then see results practically.Iam sure about it.

Not actually. Lithium is expensive. So about 20,000 more than the regular 125cc scooter + touchscreen integration + aluminium body. It will add up to it.

As a Ather 450X rider and co owner , i love Ather 450X but at the same time i regret it because it's range is low 85-95 KM in smooth riding and if you ride like petrol scooter then the range will be 60-70KM .
2Nd issue is it's Handle , Many 450X has loose handle issues in Nagpur. I have many recording proof and the technician too accepted it that it was company defect in 2nd batch .
Bohat price hai.. milage approx 150 rehna chahiye...charging time upto 1 hour rehna chahiye....

I have one basic Question, I am frequently traveling between Tumkur to Bangalore (70 KM approx) can that battery is sustainable? what if it discharges completely midway ? does this come with anything like reserve mode? or any extra battery pack?
Actually, if you go on Eco Mode, you shouldn't have any issue. There is no extra battery pack. If you are easy on the acclerator, you can get close to 80-100km range. If it discharges midway, you will have to find a charging point.

Many bikes will come within few years with a range of 150-200 & people who buy this will be guilty.
We did think of it. The ARAI claim for this scooter is 107km/charge. This is the same range for other scooters that have 150-200km/l level benchmark. What you also get is speed. If you cut on speed, your range will go higher. Also, the fast chargers will be made available in your city, and they will charge at 1km/min, and will be in a range of 3-4kms starting with Bangalore and other cities where it will be made available.
