The Varlaam Monastery or Monastery of All Saints is a men's monastery in Meteora, at the top of a steep cliff. It is located opposite the Monastery of Megalou Meteoros and stands serenely at a height of 373 meters. It is one of the six monasteries that continue to be active in Meteora, which since 1988 have been included in the UNESCO world heritage sites.
Varlaam monastery owes its name to the ascetic Varlaam, who first inhabited the rock in the 14th century. The history of the monastery actually begins at the beginning of the 16th century, when the brothers Nektarios and Theofanis the Apsarades from Gianni, descendants of an old Byzantine family of Epirus, settled on the rock and organized their community.
In 1518, the Apsarades renovated the chapel of the Three Hierarchs, which was built on the site of the original catholicon of the monastery built by Varlaam, in 1536 they built the brizon tower and in 1541 they built the current catholicon dedicated to All Saints. In 1627 the chapel of the Three Hierarchs was rebuilt on the site of the old catholicon that the Apsarades had built and in 1637 it was painted with a painting by the artistic team of priest Ioannis and his children, who came from Kalambaka.
The iconography of the monastery's catholicon took place in three phases.
In the first phase, in 1548, the famous icon painter Fragos Catellanos painted the frescoes of the holy step and the main church.
In the second phase, in 1566, the liti was painted by the Theban hagiographers Georgios Kontaris and his brother Frangos with the sponsorship of Antonio Apsaras, bishop of Vellas Ioannina.
The last phase of the decoration (1780 and 1782) which is evidenced by the foundational inscription on the north-western pesso, above the representation of the Virgin Mary, probably refers to a small-scale intervention of which no obvious evidence can be discerned. This last phase is part of the period in which the monastery continued to flourish, a bibliographic workshop was organized and it received rich donations from the rulers of Vlachias.
Important for the historical path of the monastery was the contribution of the monk Christophoros, who during the 18th century. sorted her valuable archive and copied a number of historical texts. Thanks to its financial strength, the monastery distinguished itself both in its spiritual advancement and in its participation in national competitions until recent years.

I saw the movie 'Seven Eagles (1977 Korean release)' when I was in high school. I don't remember the plot of the movie, but the sight of flying like an eagle on a hang glider between strange rocks, monasteries, and rocky mountains was impressive. I saw it through a friend's video. I am very moved to see it again. Thank you.
