I wouldn't mind hearing your list. Just please god don't put L'vventura on the list.
Wanted to hang myself in my Cinema class because I thought L'vventura was almost over but that feeling of 2 hours was actually only like an hour and I still had another hour plus thirty minutes to go with the film. That was torture.

oh god one of the best! it feels so nostalgic to me in terms of the typical Britishness that this movie is so subtly littered with? idk if that makes sense but something about it just oozes loveliness, and passion and you can tell that so much went into it to make it affect the audience in the way it does. one of my all time favourite movies, and I think it will be forever

it gets repeats on TV so much that I'm kind of sick of it now. Plus it has the whole posh, shy but intelligent young man gets woman but loses father in bittersweet tale of grief and love. Why is the guy always posh? Whenever it's a working class guy (or heaven forbid a black guy) he has to have some sort of drug abuse or financial issue problem that leads to relationship ruin OR in the case of the latter he has to be funny and crack jokes all the time. It's the type of film that worked in the 1980s but I think we should move beyond the soppy Sixteen Candles/Dirty Dancing rom-coms to something new.

My sister and I have probably watched Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist a million times. We could say any line from that movie and immediately crack each other up and it makes me so happy. I've gotta give credit to Peter Pan for shaping my psyche as a child and continuing to affect me throughout my growing up (and lack of growing up) experience, it will always be near and dear to me. I'll never get tired of The Breakfast Club, Clueless, She's the Man, John Tucker Must Die, 13 Going On 30, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Can't Buy Me Love, Footloose, Dead Poet's Society.. So many films that I could watch over and over.

Animated films are still recognised by most film makers, I'm not entirely sure but it seems a lot of the time it's the film enthusiasts who dismiss animation as being for children which is a real pity. I haven't made a list but some of the contenders for top places in the favourite films list would definitely be reserved for animated films. Studio Ghilbli and Pixar especially.

Jaws is actually one of my most favourite films, I just love everything about it. Normally, I start to loose concentration when films go on for longer than an hour and a half, but this film just captured my attention from beginning to end. It held the perfect amount of tension, keeping me on edge without over doing it. The soundtrack is just simply incredible, it really captivates the emotions of the film. I love the way it's like it's spilt into two acts, introducing the problem, and then the solution. It's so simple, just still complex enough to keep it interesting. The camera shots and editing and just general style of directing are just spot on, really makes me geek out as a media student, analysing the scenes but in a completely enjoyable way.

In my opinion, that's the most accurate definition of superfan that I've heard. It's often assumed that just because a person loves something, every aspect must be loved, whereas by knowing more, mistakes can be picked up on more readily. By making this definition, particularly from such a prominent UA-camr, hopefully someone will realise that fans don't immediately love every aspect of a franchise or product.

honestly there are so many films I love but my favourite at the minute has to be the imitation game. the soundtrack, the direction, the acting, for me it's all there. the portrayal of alan turing in that film is so heart wrenching and emotional, and the final scene, especially the very end with alan switching off the light on christopher, is the most beautiful metaphor I have seen in a film to date. it's also made better for me by the fact that it was a true story, because I feel like it's really difficult to make a good film that's based on fact. I'd definitely recommend it.

I can't say that I have seen a lot of the classics, to be honest, I might just be too mainstream- when it comes to movies. Inception was breathtaking, Gone Girl was exceptionally well made, Shutter Island was thrilling yet mind wobbling- it kept me on the edge of my seat in a different way. The Breakfast club was classic, memorable, Mulan is important(to me); for many reasons. First of all it brings out a LOT of nostalgia, second of all it is in my opinion, one of the best disney movies, Mulan is different from all the other disney princesses-- in a good way. I was never a fan of Lion King the movie, but the musical in the West End did make me cry. Silver Linings Playbook was beautiful and raw. And of course, the Harry Potter movies- well loved, indeed.

i know this is four years late but the movie that springs to mind when someone asks me “what’s your favourite movie?” HAS to be rise of the guardians. it’s just such a comfort movie for me - i knOw it’s a bit iffy in places but the characters are so fun and creative, the animation is GORGEOUS and it gave me such childlike wonder as a kid. also, jude law is in it.

I love what you said about The Social Network. Aaron Sorkin's writing has always been my favourite in terms of film and television, have you seen Studio 60? :)

+Grace Parkin Oh my god I got shivers and nearly cried just reading your comment. Seriously Lost in Translation is such a great movie. It's got the most wonderful atmosphere, Scarlett Johansson is beautiful and adorable as always. And oh my Bill Murray is just the best. For me it creates this sort of notion that Tokyo is largely undiscovered, that however many places the two main characters go, there's always something new. There's always more to see and experience. And they find their much needed peace in each other. That's my thoughts, at least. I'm going to go cry now

+Achw3l I just love that it's essentially a film about nothing. Just two people struggling and trying to find themselves in a strange new culture. It's so refreshing to have a film in which the two main characters don't get together or have a traditional "happy ending".

I pretty much agree on most of the things you said and films you named. I especially agreed on the filmmaking part, like how watching a film and get disconnected from the process of making the film or the aesthetic/director's choices gets really difficult when you are a filmmaker yourself.
To the ones you mentioned (The Dark Knight, 2001: Space Odyssey, Her, The Social Network and so on) I would add Clockwork Orange, I just love the story and the way in which Kubrik decided to portray it. I actually love most of Kubrik's stuff (Eyes Wide Shut for example), together with Cronemberg's and a lot of Aronofsky's. In fact, I cannot not name Requiem for a Dream, for example. I did a whole essay on the aesthetic of this film and I swear it never fails to amaze me. The editing and the acting is just... perfect.
Another one is Black Swan. Then Shutter Island and Memento, as well. The time-inverse editing is a very thrilling way of making the story even more intriguing. I generally love the films that leave you with a lot of questions and challenge you (as long as they actually make sense).
Mr. Nobody is very unknown but I absolutely loved it and I very much suggest you to watch it as well, if you liked Donnie Darko (film I was about to mention between my favourites anyway), you have to watch it. I loved Ex-Machina, a quite recent one I was invited to a screening of. V for Vendetta is another one I will definitely never get tired of re-watch.
From my childhood I will always remember Mulan and Emperor's New Groove, my favourite Disney films. Then Ratatouille, Tangled and Dragon Trainer more recently.
Obviously when I have to name them I always forget a half, good job me, but I felt so close to the cause I just wanted to comment. Also, I haven't seen a couple you named yet, just heard of them, so I guess I'll have to watch them sooner or later!

It's been a favorite of mine since it came out (I'm sure I could recite the whole movie to you) and then at 20 years old, I finally saw the Broadway performance, and I cried, more like tears of joy at the time since I'd waited years to see that play. The Boat That Rocked (Pirate Radio) has been my favourite film for about 4 years now. I saw it because my dad brought it home one night and briefly described it to me. I was immediately hooked with the classic rock, the stellar cast, and the plot. Although I'm usually not into films that don't have a strong plot this one just rocks it. Although the movie doesn't necessarily have a perfect plot driven middle the little bits just getting to know the characters and feeling like you're hanging out with them in 1963 is just the coolest feeling and I never tired of it. Jack if you haven't seen it I truly think and hope you'd enjoy it.

Blue Valentine is my all time favourite. has been for years. it's perfect in every way. the story laments so organically, the acting is painfully believable. it's so.. realistic that you almost feel invasive watching it. like you're a fly on the wall but you're not a fly and you're not on the wall, you're right next to the characters feeling and experiencing everything they do. Also the subtle use of colours and shots to signify mood and time is just so nicely done. The whole film has reaccuring red and blues, each scene builds up to the very last few minutes of the film, which is set on the 4th of July and it's just.. ugh, it's just so good.

It's funny and philosophical and I think Logan Lerman was the perfect Charlie and Ezra Miller was the perfect Patrick! I feel there wasn't all the info on his family like there was in the book which would have explained it a lot more and would have bonded Charlie to his family more then they were. The music is incredible but they missed out a lot of music from the book like when Sam introduces Charlie to Smells Like Teen Spirit and the tunnel song wast originally Heroes.

Yes! American Beauty is AMAZING! I also really love the Virgin Suicides and American Psycho...and Clueless...probably a little too much. Also almost all of David Lynch films, even though I still don't know what happened in Mulholland Drive to be completely honest. I love talking about films and none of my friends really like talking about them *cries*.

And let's make a video about "From Hamlet to The Lion King" lol.

Up on poppy hill is so beautifully made and the sound track is absolutely amazing, and I just love how there's a dramatic side to the story and a little more toned down side, but non of the characters over act about the dramatic part. It's just so great and beautiful and makes my skin tingle.

I think one of my favourite films is Gravity. Admittedly I don't think the dialogue was the best but everything else about it I find perfect. When you look at the behind the scenes of how they filmed it and the subliminal messages to do with the character progression involving the music, filming and imagery it's just brilliant.

Pride is my favourite movie, hands down.
Also love actually is one of my sentimental feels where I can just watch it or have it on in the background and I still love it even though I've so overplayed it. Also some brilliant movies that were recently released are Her, Wild etc.
When my dad first watched memento, directed by Christopher Nolan, he watched it, immediately hit play again when it finished, fell asleep on the lounge, woke up and watched it again. You talking about your favourite films makes me feel like that's something you would do.

While I love a lot of films, 'Shaun of the Dead' is probably *objectively* the best film I've ever watched which is odd considering most people place dramas at the top of the list. If you watch the DVD commentary with Wright and Pegg, is so clear seeing all the effort and subtitles put into the script/direction that shows just how great they are as film-makers. It's also one of the only films I can see 100 times over and still find something new to appreciate - for example, during the pub scene after Liz breaks up with Shaun, Ed predicts the rest of the film through his dialogue. It's just so amazing and beautiful and I love it 5ever (because it's more than 4ever).

WHIPLASH IS FUCKING LEGENDARY. I'm a metal drummer but I got such a big appreciation for the talent of jazz drumming and it's intensity through that film. Literally nobody I know has seen it and it's such an underdog in the film industry but it's amazing especially the ending solo. Best ending to any film ever.

I find it so difficult to pick my favourite films but Pretty Woman is definitely my number 1. Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet is up there, The History Boys (yes I know it was a play originally), loooove The Breakfast Club and American Beauty as well. My favourite Disney film will always be Sleeping Beauty because it is fairytale perfection.

A perfect film for me is Crimes and Misdemeanours. Crime and Punishment without the punishment. The balance of comedy and drama in that film is just perfect and it says so much about massive themes. Plus Martin Landau. He brought gravitas to the most insignificant roles. It was great to see him in a worthy part.
