@@johncooper7663 I watched it for the first time last month. I think it's a good quality film, but I did struggle with it. With my autism I sometimes struggle to tell people's faces apart, and so the 3 protagonists looking a bit similar made it quite hard for me to differentiate them. This was made worse by the fact I was reading the subtitles when they were talking, rather than looking at their faces, which meant sometimes I couldn't associate personalities or motives with specific people.

Three films from last year in the top 20! I have a feeling that will definitely change over time for you as it is pretty strange that after years and years of brilliant movies the ones from last year made it in. All three are still great films though and last year was a great year for films. Overall a great list though.

Hi Great list I'm 16 years old and I love movies since I can remember. I want to be a director and screenwriter in the future. I've seen over 1200 movies in my lifetime. And this is my list of 15 favorite movies of all time. The list is still growing, but for now it looks like this: 15 View Askewnivers (Clerks,Mallrats ,Dogma,Chasing Amy,Jay and Silent Bob stirke back,Clerks 2,Jay and Silent Bob reboot,Clerks 3) and just love this universe. Kevin Smith is one of the main favorites directors. 14 Watchmen (Snyder) 13 Kill Bill vol 1 and Kill Bill vol 2 12 Léon: The Professional(directors cut) 11 Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse 10 Pulp fiction 9 The Prince of Egypt 8 The departed (Martin Scorsese) 7 Forest Gump 6 Die Hard (quadrology) 5 Jaws 4 Terminator 2: the judgment day 3 Django unchained 2 Inglorius Basterds (Tarantino) 1 American history x However, to the list of 30 favorite movies I would add such titles as: Back to the future (trilogy), The Breakfast club, Gremlins 2 the new batch, Boyhood, White guys can't jump (with Woody Harrelson), Hunt for the wilderpeople (Waititi ),Titanic (Cameron),Spiderman 2 (Raimi),Groundhog Day, The Blob (Chuck Russell), Toy story (all four movies), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The hills have eyes (version Alexandre Aja), Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood (Burton), The Matrix (first movie), Heat,Thruman Show and Snatch.I hope I didn't make too many mistakes. Greetings from Poland BTW: I have a rather funny tidbit related to the Die Hard series. This series has been translated into Szklana Pułapka in Poland, which means Glass trap. This was because the first film was set in the Nakatomi Plaza skyscraper. The Polish translators did not know that this film would get sequels. So the third part was called Szklana pułapka 3, or Glass Trap 3 in English, even though that title didn't make much sense.Secound part was trasnlated into Szklana pułapka 2 etc. Such a funny curiosity.
It's so nice to hear how much you love movies, thank you for sharing your list! There's a lot in your top 30 that I also love, although there's still a few I need to watch
Moin Oliwier, for your future I would, if I were you, maybe for a year or two concetrate on the classics of international cinema. It was mostly the best school for every famous director we know. I owne more than 16 000 movies from all over the world on disc. And don' t be afraid of silent movies, because they work only with story, acting, light, cutting (and probably sometimes a good pianoplayer). Best luck ... Jörg

@@MaxDoesMovies I know, but in such precise, restricted and readable art as cinema is, I think we can reach a certain objectivity. For me it's perfect if you love (it's a list about your personal favorite of course), I like it as well, but in terms of quality, trying all my best to be objective, I think the film has many relatively concluding flaws.
@@r.c.c.10 Every film has flaws when looked at through an objective viewpoint. Everything Everywhere All At Once is perfect to me, even if it has flaws that I can identify
I really do love comedies but I find them hard to talk about from a critical standpoint since the only thing that matters is whether or not they are funny. I completely see what you mean about people omitting them from their lists
@@MaxDoesMoviesI agree somewhat with that people definitely don’t wanna show weakness but I feel comedy is the most subjective art form but a long shot but I think you can structure comedy also
@@Andrew94533 Yeah they're definitely incredibly subjective, but so is every movie. The point of making a list of your favourite films is to show your opinions

That's a brilliant list! There's still a few I need to watch but all the films on there I've seen are fantastic. To be honest, I didn't enjoy The Last Wish as much as everyone else seems to. It's not because it's animated or anything like that (I have an entire video about the importance of animation), I just didn't really feel any connection to the story. I understand that it was trying to go for the classic fairy-tale tropes but, to me, admitting the tropes you're following doesn't make those tropes interesting
Very intriguing list. I need to get some of these! My own list is short: Shawshank Redemption...Field of Dreams...Children of Men. With a comedic nod to the funniest movie of all time: Airplane. Followed by Austin Powers. On another category from my youth in New York: The Warriors.

I'm going to see 2001 in a couple weeks. I didn't enjoy Darjeeling myself but I'm happy to see 12 Angry Men and Everything Everywhere on your list!
@@drizzle952 Why do you think so? This is my review on Letterbox and the reason why I love it: I find it sad that this movie didn’t get all it deserved because of the false idea people had about its filmmaker back in the days. How could you take back the movie’s integrity just because you wanted something of a different genre or a better twist? An artist makes what he thinks is compelling, what he thinks should be seen. Shyamalan movies aren’t just about the twist. Hell, some don’t even have twists. Also, it’s not just about having monsters vs humans. The Village is one of his movies that I think have unfair treatment alongside Glass. I guess it feels a bit tired in the end. The twist isn’t necessarily like The Sixth Sense but it serves more like a Mcguffin, without really being one. It serves the social commentary of the movie but I feel the twist is just there to serve his fans at the time. People that missed the entire point of his filmography. It could have lived without the twist. Even then, I don’t hate the twist, in fact it’s pretty great. What I hate though is that lots of people, when I read about the movie on here, IMDB or even Rotten Tomatoes seem to concentrate on the twist, forgetting everything else about the movie. As for me, I will never forget anything about it. It got me hooked from the very beginning. One of the best way we’ve put love on screen. The characters are cliché. You got a blind girl, a mentally disabled (seems like that) and a brave guy but they all are written so way, especially in their interactions that you feel like it’s real. It gives chills at how beautiful it is. Thanks to James Newton Howard and his violins, offering one of the greatest soundtracks I’ve heard in a film. It’s so strong, it’s like you see the bond between the characters and it’s all heartbreaking when you see the movie unfolds. Adrien Brody is amazing and Bryce Dallas Howard too. With that kind of character, you would fear that they over play but they do not.
@@medou2161 Fair enough. If you like the film, that's absolutely fine. For me, forgetting the ridiculousness and implausibility of the entire situation the people of the village were in, the whole thing was just an utter bore- fest. Like, almost nothing happened in the whole movie...😙

As you'll see Rocky Horror and The Truman Show make mine! Up, 12 Angry Men and Holy Grail would be in a top 50ish, love Grand Budapest. Out of your movies I want to watch... interesting fact about me. i’m still yet to start any of the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potters or Star Wars movies, also little to no superhero Marvel movies. In your top 10, on my watch list is The Batman, Spider-man into the spider verse and of course cause as mentioned earlier, the Star Wars movies😁 Which should put me very much closer to a definitive “Top 100”😝
Wow! There's loads on your list that I haven't seen yet but I can see that you know a lot about what you're talking about. I'm glad to see Everything Everywhere All At Once on your list! As per your other comment, I hope you enjoy the Star Wars movies! I'm not a massive fan of Harry Potter or the MCU, and I haven't seen Lord Of The Rings since I was about 6 so I don't remember the trilogy too well but I still wish you the best with them. For Star Wars, there's a large debate on where someone should start with the franchise if it's their first time watching. In my opinion, Episode IV (A New Hope) is the best place to start as it does the best job of explaining the way the galaxy works as well as the overarching story. My recommendation for your order is: 1. Original Trilogy (IV, V, VI) 2. Prequel Trilogy (I, II, III) 3. Sequel Trilogy (VII, VIII, IX) The Sequel Trilogy is very polarising in the Star Wars community. Personally, I really really dislike them, but that's not to say that you won't enjoy them. They are probably still worth watching for a new fan. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the films when you watch them!
@@MaxDoesMovies These movies all touched me or gave me something to chew on, something worthwhile. A lot of movies have ambitious intention, interesting plot but unfortunately fall flat or just come off underwhelming, at least to me. sometimes they have a bad energy too, which i can appreciate but Blue Velvet is not a movie with enough redeeming quality just as an example. It’s hypnotic, and placed somewhere in this world and the next, but ultimately, if all one can take from it is that evil exists, but not just exists and exists powerfully, then it borders on disturbing. it serves a purpose but that reality is what i try escape from, not see in movies. if done right, it’s amazing, but most Lynch movies have always been too abstract and other times just odd. But i appreciate the filmmaker. i am yet to see a real Lynch movie i adore, yet they all have a place, it’s just not in as high regard as other movies for me. Generally, i struggle with movies that i feel haven’t aged well, look too old or are foreign. i’ve tried many times to pursue these in attempt to broaden my film experience but as of late have sort of given up. There is still a very distinct era i am yet to tackle (1920s to 1960s) but the ones i have watched more often than not i’ve had a hard time. I don’t know if it’s the sort of culture differential. I can watch movies set in “a future” setting as long as there are relatable interactions. i struggle with period pieces. I like movies that either deal with the human condition, a trope or personality i can relate to, about society, spirituality or religion or realistic human interaction that i find holds genuine universal truth and weight. or just very intelligent plots like Groundhog Day, Adaptation, The Prestige, Inception, Memento etc. a degree of logic is usually important so i can follow easier. i also can like cheesy movies but they have to be done right and subtlety built as opposed to hitting you over the head with it. i’d like to think i’ve thought about watching most movies, or started them and not liked them. some i’ve not liked, finished after, and loved so it’s never a consistent formula. generally also i dislike action movies, i care little for being scared while i watch a movie and i am interested by thrillers and mysteries, but find once you learn of the plot twist or whatever, it’s hard to keep its rewatchability. for me, they sort of only work once, but i guess this could be argued for most movies. Not always the case but mostly. I find all movies are better if you wait years between rewatching them. though i rarely rewatch movies as finding newer ones makes more sense, it’s sad to feel like ones nearing the end of their list though. Who knows, when i look back on it maybe these will just be the films that defined my teenage years and 20s. And won’t be my favourites anymore. I also find slow movies a chore and can get quite detached depending on pacing, some people don’t seem to have that issue and would identify that in myself as a sort of drawback. but it’s important to always rely and trust your own taste, your own dislikes and likes. that’s why i love your list. it felt very personal. I am sure you would enjoy at least 50% of the movies i have listed. Your reviews on Stalker and Ikiru were amazing and very insightful to what you like. i can only agree. Given Ikiru was underwhelming for you, i’d recommend the recent remake (Living 2022). i haven’t watched it, but i want to given i didn’t enjoy ikiru as much as i wanted. Sometimes for me also, the protagonist can feel “too old” to be relatable to, i dunno, it’s odd, i also don’t tend to like female centric stories either. i dunno if it is down to my ASD or whether these are just organic tastes. Stalker was good but i found it better on paper than in actual delivery. i think on watching it, your expectations are always gravitating toward them going into The Room and seeing what’s that like, but the actual message is that they are extremely reluctant when push comes to shove. it’s certainly an odd movie and makes you think but feels like something you know anyway through experience. What you think you desire may not actually be the case. Pretty universal idea for me. i think may have been good for when it came out or whatever and the acting and direction is spot on i just think the story is made out to be a bit better than it actually is. hopefully you can appreciate this reply and find value in it. apologies for going on and on! a lot of it is just me thinking out loud in hopes i can make a worthwhile point 😁 Btw, i was about a decade older than you when i really realised how much i loved film. You have an old head on your shoulders. Can’t expect you to appreciate everything on my list at 15/16 but over time at least it will build your tastes and help with self exploration if you ever try any of them out. A lot of these movies may only be relevant to me, sort of about alienation, counterculture, nonconformity, loneliness, spirituality, philosophy, fitting in, how relationships/friendships can work, depressive tendencies etc. comedies based just on personal sense of humour. What people deal with, how things affect other things and so on and so forth. if you want a refined list of movie recommendations, as opposed to what just my personal favourites are, i’d be happy to oblige. Austin Powers was hilarious btw, putting it on at about 02:30 was a stupid idea though. I also realised unconsciously i must’ve either watched it or been exposed to a lot of the scenes especially with Dr Evil in, it felt oddly familiar. is there a favourite you have or is it just the first one. Comedy is one of my favourite genres, very easy to see if you like them, very forgiving movies, not difficult to interpret like some movies are, they are important to me as a sort of release. mindless entertainment. i love a comedy that transcends just being funny though. If you need help finding any of the movies just let me know. Peace out Max! ✌️
@@-_Luciano_- I too love films that explore ideas of alienation and loneliness, which is why "It's Such A Beautiful Day" is so high on my list. Another film I've seen since making this video is 'A Ghost Story' by David Lowery, which also showcases themes of loneliness and relationships in a really interesting way, I would definitely recommend it if you haven't seen it already. I understand what you mean about struggling to watch older films, it's something that I have to deal with from time to time. I think it might be to do with the way the scripts were written and how the ideas in the story were presented that can make it difficult. There are obviously exceptions to this, such as '12 Angry Men, yet an instance where I really struggled was when watching Stanley Kubrick's 'Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb'. I don't have the same problem you do when watching foreign films but that's likely because I have an interest in languages so I enjoy listening to people speaking in various dialects. I'm not a big fan of action movies either. For me, the characters involved in the story are often one of the best aspects of a film. In my opinion, action films tend to lack interesting characters with much depth or personality and so often fail to engage me. I'm also not very entertained by seeing a million explosions every time anything action-based happens. I sometimes have trouble relating to characters that are quite dissimilar to me, but I think one of the amazing properties of cinema is the ability to spend a view hours looking at life through a pair of eyes completely foreign from your own. Films allow us to see what life is like for so many different types of people that, whilst I cannot always relate to the characters, I find it awe-inspiring that I can feel their experiences and emotions with them. I'm really glad you enjoyed Austin Powers, I think the second film is my favourite but I grouped them into one for the sake of this list. Do you have a Letterboxd account? If so reply to me with your username and I'll follow you so I can see your opinions on the films you watch. Thank you for watching and commenting :)
@@MaxDoesMovies I wrote out a full long length reply to this but my phone died. I doubt il be able to replicate it. Basically, i wanted to recommend Son of Rambow to you cause that was one of the first movies i saw as a kid that i think possibly planted a seed that movies have this enormous potential to move and captivate you. Sort of like, that realisation that this is how every movie *should* be, or at least have this effect. i didn’t even know i was looking for this in a movie when i bought the tickets kinda type thing. I was also talking about how being at my age now, that it’s only as of late where i feel like my like and dislike palate has fully developed. it’s crazy how much more you grow up after thinking you’re already grown up. But it’s possible this experience will happen again when moving from quarter centurion to half a century lol. Maybe it never goes away. Yeah era pieces do my head in, i attempted to watch Terry Gilliams favourite movie - One Eyed Jacks and found it horrible, it’s a western. Just felt all kinds of bad, the music set the feel early on and had low hopes from then. I turned it off mid way. The plot had a decent amount of potential and was actually pretty interesting really but it just wasn’t delivering. It’s things like that which cause me to generalise and disfavour Westerns in general. My personal favourite is a movie called Unforgiven but it’s mainly cause the main character has this mystical indomitable anime feel about him. Its also 20 years after a typical western would’ve come out. but its very very good. Not overt depth in plot, an engaging one, but more of a character study with probably one of the the best endings to a movie ever What i find as well is, when referring to online or best lists, that if it’s not a UK based source then sometimes some of the movies mentioned just may not work on a culture differential level. And cause of this may never work. At least not all the way. You only have to look at their depiction of high school to see how different it must be to be American, despite us speaking the same language and generally considering ourselves the same just in different countries. But it must actually run deep. Something only has to be a fraction off to be something different entirely. Obviously we aren’t aliens, and not everything American or foreign is incomprehensible, like our favourite movies are probably American. i know for a fact i’d change nothing about Dazed and Confused or The Breakfast club for example. But it is interesting to think about. It’s a dire shame the film industry isn’t bigger here or that there aren’t many well known English filmmakers or just English filmmakers in general. Most have to do it on a shoe string budget - think Mike Leigh. or the ones that are considered great border on the morbid, think the well respected Ken Loach. But it’s like i was saying, maybe his movies represent this culture more and that the reality is closer to that of a dark depressing one. Whereas Americans are sort of more deluded in a sort of unconscious self preserving type way. if that makes sense. Whereas we will kinda just say things how they are and won’t romanticise. David Lynch reminds me of a filmmaker who explores dark and depraved themes but manages to intertwine it with a sort of romanticism, which i think, is where it might lose me. But it’s very well done artistically and stylistically, i just evidently don’t like it as much as Americans do. For me, an ideal movie transcends culture and penetrates what it means to be human, something we all understand. i think that’s why Samsara and Baraka are so revered. But this theme is obviously very ambitious and *big* if you will. It’s much easier to write a story or plot than tackle things we universally don’t really fully understand. I appreciated Its such a beautiful day but i didn’t love it, i think the concept and theme is breathtaking, even the animation is really well done. I just for some reason couldn’t get past the third person narration and the voice(super petty i know). if a proper narrator was brought in, i’d like it more i hope. and i did like it, but i didn’t love it. which was a shame given it had all the hallmarks of what i’d usually love. It definitely has its importance in the world. Hope you’re doing well btw mate. i don’t know how to use Letterboxd if being honest, i usually mobile browse so i think some of the features don’t show up. where does it show someone else’s ratings or the movies ratings? and is there a database to search for users highest rated movies? i’ll have to check it out. I’m actually going to watch The Jerk now, never watched it before. but this plot device has always been my favourite on a comedy level. Someone being out of touch with the others, or things or just straight stupid/dumb, always makes me laugh. I’ve been putting Where The Wild Things Are cause based on what you’ve said and what i can gather, may be a bit too heavy for me atm. Hence why i am preferring mind numbing comedies as of late.
My top ten favorite movies in alphabetical order are: Braveheart Bringing Up Baby Dolores Claiborne Forrest Gump Innerspace Magnolia Maltese Falcon Psycho Purple Rose of Cairo Singin in the Rain

So surprised you and others in this thread rate The Batman so highly. I thought it a poor warm over of my favorite movie, The Dark Knight, though it has a couple of good parts that made me glad I saw it. Empire Strikes Back is likely number 2. Jaws 3. Exorcist, Godfather 2, Good Fellas, Back to the Future, Educating Rita, Something About Mary, Observe and Report, Blazing Saddles and Citizen Kane are up there. Order not chosen.
I love The Batman because it showcases the detective side to the character, which a lot of media ignores. Whilst I do think The Dark Knight is a brilliant movie, I never really enjoyed watching Bale's Batman, and Gotham just felt like Chicago. I'm not hating at all, just explaining why I prefer The Batman

Stalker, good movie, good book.

5 Jaws
4 Terminator 2: the judgment day

However, to the list of 30 favorite movies I would add such titles as: Back to the future (trilogy), The Breakfast club, Gremlins 2 the new batch, Boyhood, White guys can't jump (with Woody Harrelson), Hunt for the wilderpeople (Waititi ),Titanic (Cameron),Spiderman 2 (Raimi),Groundhog Day, The Blob (Chuck Russell), Toy story (all four movies), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The hills have eyes (version Alexandre Aja), Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood (Burton), The Matrix (first movie), Heat,Thruman Show and Snatch.I hope I didn't make too many mistakes. Greetings from Poland
BTW: I have a rather funny tidbit related to the Die Hard series.
Jörg

Well, I found a lot of flaws in EEAAO. It's a good film, but not perfect at all.
@@r.c.c.10 Perfection is subjective, nothing can ever be objectively perfect, but can be perfect for a person
I like that you added a lot of comedies. I find people don't add them to their lists because they think it makes them look more intelligent.

I'm glad we actually share some similarities! The only films on your list that I've that I would NOT give a 10/10 (or higher) to are The Grand Budapest Hotel (7/10, didn't click with me) and The Batman (9/10, a few problems but easily my favorite interpretation of Batman since the DCAU)
I'm happy we share Spider-Verse! Did you watch the latest trailer for the sequel?
@@MaxDoesMovies Yes I am. I am also extremely excited for the sequel. The Spot is the most underrated Spider-Man villain so I'm excited to see what they do with him. Hope he's silly but formidable
@@neminem233 He seems that way from the trailer, I can't wait to see it!
Please keep in mind before I reveal my list that I am a mega film fan so new films are ALWAYS added. 5 of these movies are ones I only saw in these past few months. There are also many popular classic I haven’t gotten around to yet (although I’m planning on checking out Fight Club this week)

6) Kiki’s Delivery Service
5) Padak
4) Back to the Future
3) Ratatouille
2) Shaun of the Dead
1) Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
That's a brilliant list! There's still a few I need to watch but all the films on there I've seen are fantastic. To be honest, I didn't enjoy The Last Wish as much as everyone else seems to. It's not because it's animated or anything like that (I have an entire video about the importance of animation), I just didn't really feel any connection to the story. I understand that it was trying to go for the classic fairy-tale tropes but, to me, admitting the tropes you're following doesn't make those tropes interesting
@@MaxDoesMovies that’s fair enough

Swiss Army Man. Yes. I love how fresh it is.
The village??? What an awful film...

Edit: Tonight’s movie is actually going to be Austin Powers, hopefully it can be in my top movies afterward. Haven’t watched it as an adult and can’t remember any of it :p
Out of your movies I want to watch... interesting fact about me. i’m still yet to start any of the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potters or Star Wars movies, also little to no superhero Marvel movies. In your top 10, on my watch list is The Batman, Spider-man into the spider verse and of course cause as mentioned earlier, the Star Wars movies😁
Which should put me very much closer to a definitive “Top 100”😝
My recommendation for your order is:
1. Original Trilogy (IV, V, VI)
2. Prequel Trilogy (I, II, III)
3. Sequel Trilogy (VII, VIII, IX)
The Sequel Trilogy is very polarising in the Star Wars community.
Stalker was good but i found it better on paper than in actual delivery. i think on watching it, your expectations are always gravitating toward them going into The Room and seeing what’s that like, but the actual message is that they are extremely reluctant when push comes to
shove. it’s certainly an odd movie and makes you think but feels like something you know anyway through experience.
Not overt depth in plot, an engaging one, but more of a character study with probably one of the the best endings to a movie ever
What i find as well is, when referring to online or best lists, that if it’s not a UK based source then sometimes some of the movies mentioned just may not work on a culture differential level.
My top ten favorite movies in alphabetical order are:
Braveheart
Bringing Up Baby
Dolores Claiborne
Forrest Gump
Innerspace
Magnolia
Maltese Falcon
Psycho
Purple Rose of Cairo
Singin in the Rain

EEAAO is definitely worth watching even if you're scared, trust me :)
4:08: I am the opposite 😂. I like when only visuals tell the story. Silent films even better.
I do also love visual storytelling, and I think silence can be so powerful in different films. One example I love is the train scene in Spirited Away!

Good list... Still I feel either you've left or not seen many legends
There's a lot of classic films such as The Godfather or 2001 that I haven't seen yet, I'm just waiting for good times to watch them!
