      @Heldermaior Рік тому +11

      @@elementxc they are extremely comparable. I have a steam deck. Wss going to buy the Ally. Then realized the deck has enough performance on the go so getting the Ally would be to have it party mode which means battery dies very fast so plugged in it is. If I am using it plugged in then why am I spending so much money on it? I could get a better performing laptop for the same price. Then if I am buying a laptop to do basically desk gaming why not just use my gaming PC? But I spend all day working on my PC and the deck basically made game again. If I want a lightweight system that supports eGPUs and I can get rid of my tower, why not one of these mini PCs? They are cheaper tham the ally, offer better performance and with something like Batocera or Chimera OS I csn basically play all my games and emulators on it. Including PS3/Xbox360.

    The Shadow of the Tomb Raider save thing is almost certainly because it automatically installed the Linux native port, and saves aren't compatible from the Windows version. You'd need to set it to run under Proton to force it to use the Windows version. I ran into this when playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on my Deck.

    Pretty nice video. I don't remember where I heard this, but I believe that a developer for ChimeraOS found SteamOS to be eerily similar to Chimera. Also, this linux distribution is compatible with some other PC handhelds like those from Aya Neo and the Steam Deck itself (there's a list on the website). Once again, great video and I hope to see more of ChimeraOS in the future.

    Honestly it's about the same performance you'd get out of a PS4, not even a Pro.. Scratch that, less than that, I've played a fair few of these on PS4, not only have they looked better, but performed better. Would like to see if there will be any performance difference later though. To be frank, you could buy a next-gen console for that price, and if you get a Series X or S, you can just throw Games Pass for a bit extra which would nearly be the same price currently. The original price however is utterly insane for the performance, you could buy a laptop that performs better for $640, hell, for $20 more a probably really nice one, so honestly if all you are getting is the form-factor, that's a hefty tax.

    too bad linux doesnt have something simple like windows power plan, thats normally how i do quick and easy iGPU 'overclocks', by changing the high performance power profile to not use turbo, or make a second one called game so i can have high performance with and without turbo.
    Alot of the time these dips are caused by the iGPU dropping in clocks to keep the total package power under a certain wattage, it would be nice if someone made a tool for linux that allows you to prioritize maintaining highest clocks on GPU, or CPU

    • @benign4823
      @benign4823 Рік тому

      It doesn't need power plans just tell GPU/CPU to degrade or not performance.
      Linux doesn't need that because it's not as aggressive with power savings and its scheduler isn't shit like Windows's.
      The only scheduler that would make a difference would be the CPU one, which uses schedutil or ondemand by default, you can easily change that with power-profiles-daemon on Gnome/KDE or starting the game with gamemode though.
      But again, that might give you a boost of 1-2 fps if any at all.

      @@benign4823 if the cpu is using 15 more watts than it need from a 45w package power budget you can bet your ass youll lose more than 1-2 FPS, unless you were only getting 10-15FPS in the first place.
      Does linux automatically limit the CPU to allow more power to the GPU, because last time i tried, it doesnt.
      Sure you can manually change it, but at that point windows is easier because you have simple 1 click performance toggles, sorry, had, it used to be in the notification area now you have to click on the battery and go to more settings.

      @benign4823 Рік тому +1

      @@denvera1g1 So you wanna argue specifically for integrated GPUs.
      Well, since both GPU and CPU get power from the same place, I guess it would be useful to be able to restrict one part as needed depending on the bottleneck in this use case, I agree.
      Changing your power profiles is not an overclock though, it's just a putting on or removing a limiter.
      You can easily change the power profile on Linux through the GUI though depending on what you use, on Gnome or KDE go to the power settings and change it to performance/balanced/power saving.
      It limits the CPU, so if the GPU needs power it's free to get it, in the case of a handheld with an integrated GPU this is enough since the GPU is always the bottleneck.

    • @denvera1g1
      @denvera1g1 Рік тому

      @@benign4823 this was my point, instead of going through the trouble of -oberclocking- overclocking, i just limit the CPU so it can shift the power, now what i like about linux is that it is easer to customize, we can easily get a keyboard shortcut that switches the CPU power profile, but until it is built into a linux distro, like SteamOS, people will prefer the windows version
      I love steam OS distro it is so slick for gaming, i just wish it would support other hardware in the same way, i'd also like more control than package power target, in addition i'd like CPU and GPU power target(allowing you to choose any of the 3 to modify)

    I feel like AMD's mobile offerings are a bit behind the curve compared to where they'd usually be at the generational refresh, and this is especially apparent the lower in the product stack you go, especially with graphics being what should otherwise be last gen. Hopefully this is just a quirk in timing, and the next generation is a massive jump that is no longer behind the curve. I'd be a really bad time to start getting lazy and hand the handheld market to Intel, given how the market is growing to a point that the mainstream PC component manufacturers are taking notice, in a generation or two we could easily see a boom, especially if Steam Deck 2 provides decent competition, and this would be a terrible time for AMD to fumble things.

      @@nielsdebakker3283 The combination of straw man, red herring, and false equivalence is one hell of a combination of fallacies.
      First let's get false equivalence out of the way, since that seems to be your main point. Intel's iGPU was never meant to be a performance chip, they literally just exist to consolidate how many chips were on a motherboard. If you have any memory of, or were even around at the time, there used to be a low-power GPU on motherboards between the eras of requiring a dGPU outright and iGPU integration. These lower-end dGPU chips still exist to some extent within the laptop market, the latest from Nvidia would be the GeForce MX chips, though I'm not sure what AMD offers for lower-end dGPU options, and I'm sure Intel will eventually have their own offerings within their newer dGPU microarches. You're arguing about an entirely different class of chipset, so yes this would be false equivalence.
      Now for your straw man, you completely misinterpreted the original statement, and I'm inclined to believe maliciously so just to show your fanboyism. The whole comparison of products and the 'behind the curve' statement is only inclusive to AMD's own offerings, both in current tech vs. product stack and historical tech vs. product stack. This generation of offerings is not only a mixed bag, Zen 4 + RDNA 3, Zen 3 + RDNA 3, and Zen 4 + RDNA 2, and IIRC there may be a Zen 3 + RDNA 2 chip at the bottom of the current stack, but the offerings along the product stack are falling behind the curve, see anything that isn't Zen 4 + RDNA 3 at any point along the stack. And since we want to argue handhelds, the chips handhelds receive are within the range of being behind the curve, this is what the statement was referring to, this is what you have maliciously missed to shit on Intel products with your toxic fanboyism.
      Then the red herring, which is pretty obvious, you took your straw man and made it entirely about your fanboyism, which is what the previous alluded to.
      So unless you can learn how to intelligently contribute to conversations without an assload of fallacies, I would suggest sitting out of conversations. And if you really feel the need to spew shit constantly, I suggest going back to your echochamber communities where you all wank each other to your fanboyism. In short, stfu, gtfo, and gfy. Everyone with any amount of intelligence is so utterly tired of people like you, people who really need restricted internet access due to the fact that a monkey with a typewriter can contribute more intelligently than you can.
