I went to Bob Jones back in 82-83 and knew nothing about the school as far as the oppressive environment. I knew it was strict but not to the degree that I experienced once there. My brother went there and graduated with no issues, but I couldn't stand it and begged my parents to let me come home after 1 1/2 years. I eventually returned home and then a few years later went to Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia and loved it there (even though I'm not Mennonite). Eventually, my parents asked me to forgive them as I told them years later that I felt I had no choice but to go to BJU and wasn't prepared for its toxic, legalistic and emotionally damaging environment. Although my home life wasn't toxic but we did go through a period of legalism and then finally found a better church to attend. I'm amazed that this school is still in existence but unfortunately BJU graduates keep reproducing after "their own kind" and those kids probably go to BJU to fulfill their parents' dreams/demands. Oh well, so glad to be beyond that toxic thinking!
