      Step one: Drop the "authenticity" lingo

    • @alberich3099
      @alberich3099 4 роки тому +9

      I think that is a very hard thing to do, because you want to create something entertaining.
      The few firefights I was in were "boring" - don't get me wrong it was scary, adreanalin rushed and quite a piece wor work for everybody involved BUT if you were to film it people would not realy understand what is going on and it would look fairly stale.
      Yea shots go out shots come in, the occasional grade went off and we recieved some mortar fire, but the question (as far as I can judge it) is less how can we make it authentic but more how can we frame it so it is entertaining wihtout loosing reality.
      For me at least, is it less about is the setting beeing "authentic" or real, but do the protagonists behave appropriatly and act appart.
      It is not always needed to portrey a soldier as either deeply troubbled or philosophical as some movies do in order to create some sort of commentary on the situation, sometimes it is ok to just show them bored, makeing inappropriate jokes and talk about mondane stuff.
      That is what I personally find missing in many combat story movies.

I meet a lot of veterans in the homeless shelters where I work, disproportionally so. Most of them have mental issues due to the horrible stuff they've been through. When they returned from combat they got no support, nothing, from the people who sent them there in the first place. The reasons are probably politics and whatnot. Anyway, it's sad really.

      @Hernando Malinche Vet here chiming in... respect how? I mean, I get "thank you for your service" quite often, and people OUTSIDE the military sure love giving me 1/2 off on a stack of pancakes on Veteran's Day, but the military itself doesn't give a shit. I signed up, gave every inch of what I had, and felt like as I exited the service I was in some legal battle with an enemy. Every benefit I got I had to FIGHT for, as every wound I received and deserved compensation for, contractually, got analyzed until it could be determined that it 'may' have been from a source other than the military. I was always the guy to "take one for the team," but the second I was no longer in uniform, they didn't give a shit about what happened to me.

    "Matt Best," is it...? "The robe is YOU!"
    I love this stuff!
    I was in the Navy... Never got to do anything but swab the deck and chip paint off the ship's surfaces for repainting... To chip it off later, for repainting... to... Well, you get it I guess?
    Now, I'm about to hit the 60 mile marker on this twisted road we call life. And I love the idea that you guys, who really did see action, some of it horrific at times, are moving past that time in your own lives, and not just offering coffee to the masses, but offering hope and help to those who may have walked in your shoes, and then, somewhere, they got lost in the fire and smoke...
    I keep looking forward to 'new adventures,' in your videos. I hope you guys never get tired of making them... They do make an old 'salty dog,' happy!
    And by the way, When I was onboard ship, I worked my time in the galley, "mess hall,' to you lowbrows, 'restaurant,' to you Air Force country club members! Anyway, we used to get our coffee, in square, mil-spec 5 gallon cans. We used a hammer and screwdriver to hack the top off the can. You know, coffee was almost always in the pot, 24-7, and this coffee, which had to be a standard, government issue to the Navy, was truly great coffee! Not harsh or bitter, it was a smooth cup. And 2 cups before watch meant you could fly all night long! Too much of it and you get those, "over caffeinated, nauseous feelings," like you would rather puke than go another minute!
    But in the end, you didn't puke and everything would mellow out after a few hours. This was like, 1980-82, when I left that ship... It was in dry dock for nearly 2 years, so they didn't need a big crew...
    Salute!

    It's an interesting question, just from a general filmic perspective. I would say having combat experience clearly can't hurt- if a filmmaker has firsthand combat experience and sets out to make a war film.
    But it's kind of complicated.
    The first filmmaker with combat experience who comes to mind is Sam Fuller. Sam Fuller is important for several reasons. First, he inspired countless great filmmakers, like Quentin Tarantino and Tim Robbins. And he was also one of the first successful writers who directed his own scripts.
    Fuller's combat experience was extensive, including the D-Day Normandy invasion. He made a film about these experiences, *The Big Red One* which was gutted by the studio upon release in 1980, but subsequently got a well-received "Apocalypse Now"-style director's cut re-release several years ago on dvd. It's a good film, some people consider it one of the greatest war films of all time. I like it, but I've never loved it.
    And, maybe paradoxically, for all of Fuller's firsthand experience, I would still say his depiction of the Normandy invasion pales in comparison to Spielberg's depiction 2 decades later in *Saving Private Ryan* despite the fact that Spielberg does not have a second's worth of military experience whatsoever.
    There is actually an endless parade of great war films that have been made by filmmakers who never picked up a weapon in their lives, films like Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" or Paul Verhoeven's "Soldier of Orange".
    So, I would say combat experience CAN clearly lend a filmmaker valuable intuition and insight when making a war film. Oliver Stone's *Platoon* and Jean-Pierre Melville's *Army of Shadows* are two GREAT examples of films made by men about wars they fought in themselves (Stone as an American infantryman during the Vietnam War, Melville as a resistance fighter in occupied France during WW2). But that personal experience is not always necessarily required to produce war films that matter.

    • @thesaltedlamp3444
      @thesaltedlamp3444 3 роки тому +1

      Interesting point. I think that may be because war films are made for civilians, and therefore must at least partially coincide with the civilian idea of what war is like to be considered successful. So, you need to be a good filmmaker to do this, and not necessarily a veteran. Although, I'm sure being a veteran who can film/direct/write or at least having a veteran reference on set greatly helps increase the caliber of the film.

    • @andyhaochizhang

      Cinema and reality is definitely very different. There are many historic footage from WW2 and none of the ones I’ve seen look anything like the famous epic war scenes. It makes sense since real life military operations that lasts for days and can take place over hundreds of kilometres of front lines while a movie lasts several hours in limited space.

    That real talk at the end of the video got me all emotional. That was a great touch to end the video. It’s something I always think about with those who have gone through war and have come home to normal life with these experiences that scar them the rest of their lives. I have such respect for those who have served and I’m thankful for their sacrifices.

      The older stuff like the BTS of the primitive zombie series are good content, and so are their older antics around the studio that feels more natural and impromptu. That was almost a year ago.
