- Last year, a Dragon Quest website came about which brought the media together. Then a #DragonBall one was developed; and it got us thinking - what if the precursor to #DragonBallZ and #DragonBallSuper were to be refreshed for the modern age, to be rebooted or remade? Should it be? What would change, what would be lost? Let's discuss whether or not Dragon Ball should be redone.

if they reboot dragon ball they need to rewrite parts of the story which make no sense.

Personally, i would reboot it! While i don't want it to change TOO much, i wouldn't want it to be a cornucopia of the original. Just like you said, we could add more and more into the earthling lore, like Tenshinhan's mutations or his best buddy's adventures!

If it were an alt timeline all that you would need to change is that Fanfan survived the king piccolo’s rampage and married Roshi thus making him less of a perv when dragon ball starts.

Good. Some of early Dragon Ball "humor" bombed so hard, I gotta wonder if Toriyama was taking points from Little Boy and Fat Man. Not even that it's in bad taste, it's that there's no punchline, no subversion.

The original Dragon Ball is my favourite part of the entire series, I really don't want them to change it.
I'd rather a retouching to help clean up the aging anime but keep everything the same, especially things that aren't "PC" because removal is ignorance

I like the idea of you making a series called "what if Dragon Ball was Rebooted" we're basically you take Dragon Ball and make your own reboot of it in whatever way you want to.
Wait hold on you might be on to something. What if instead of a full reboot, it's more like a reset in the universe. Let's just say for a second that some universe-ending event happens in super that resets the universe that takes them back in time to the beginning of dragon ball. They could then interject fresh ideas for the modern era while still keeping with the spirit of dragon ball

The fanfic writer in me sees opportunities for the plot to improve. Maybe fleshing out of some characters, foreshadowing or setting up the seemingly endless power scale. Maybe some retconned stuff becomes Canon in this. Though I will be concerned how fans take it. The old saying being "if it ain't broke don't fix it"
Exactly. There's a chance to refine the story to make it more in line with what we know now...but that's a very frought game to play. You gotta be careful.
@@MasakoX Indeed. Gotta make sure the fans are happy and see what's added to be improvements its very tight rope, especially given how long the story has been and the size of the fanbase.
To be honest, for me it would be stuff beyond Dragonball that Id liked to see changed, but what Id like to see changed would create a radically different Dragonball (Z) that would at best be divisive and at worst I'd be the only one happy.
Indeed, as much of a classic series Dragon Ball is, it has aged like any other older series and it has long be surpassed in many aspects.
It definitely inferior when compared to the like of One Piece, My Hero Academia and Hunter x Hunter.
A reboot under good writers would definitely upgrade the series to a new level from plot, characters, world building and power system.

Would like to see how their peaceful societal ways collapse when confronted with galactic war lords. And that's just one idea. Imagine all the other possibilities.
Every episode would just be the saiyan protagonists blowing up a new planet and then getting bullied by Frieza-dono and his men afterwards.
A series taking place in Universe 6 could be interesting though.

To be fair, that's a cartoon and not anime. Most of the time anime reboots sail over usually well.

No, I don't remember that. Which probably supports your point about reboots.
Mr Bones' point is also valid, though. Japan has a different attitude towards media. They tolerate Gundam's scattered multiverse where some ace pilot always ends up wearing a mask and fighting against teen prodigy pilots.
And many of their reboots have gone rather well, largely because of how anime is handled that western animation isn't. Fruits Basket, for a recent example, or Fullmetal Alchemist for a more stark example where the reboot was almost immediate of a widely loved anime and yet extremely well received.
The manga (or more recently, web novel) is treated as the "real" story, and there is an acceptance that there will be differences in interpretation to animated formats...which in turn lets a reboot have an expectation of being a better interpretation. You can see something similar in the US when something has a perceived "real" story - we're a lot more forgiving for Stephen King's "It" or Frank Herbert's "Dune" being remade, or the 397th "Batman meets the Joker for the first time" movie, largely focusing on the differences in performances and portrayals rather than complaining about it being a reboot. But for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Magic School Bus, or so many other western cartoons, the original animated version is seen as the "real" story, so the reboots feel like dollar store copies.

If they ever did do a reboot, I would like to see characters like Chi-Chi have a bigger role in the series.

I wouldn't hate if they kept/remastered all the voice acting, but put a brand new skin on it. Like all the skits and scene's would play out normally, but the animation and sound effects would be modern. Unsure how likely or even possible that is though

I honestly doubt that it is going to be reboot. Remember Toriyama was already tired of his own story beforehand. Usually reboots are not made by original creators.

There will be a reboot if the tax man comes knocking on his tax evading ass again. The only reason he helped helm Super was his name appearing in the Paradise Papers.

Side stories are probably a more safe and better alternative than a reboot.
The past of characters like Master Roshi, Vegeta, Shin, Lord Beerus and Kami have potential to be great stories.

I would like to see a spin off series where Beat is the main character and his adventures in the Dragonball world.
Considering Beat is from the future, it could also double as a retelling of Online/Xenoverse/Heroes. Beat is one of Goku's descendants after all.

I'd love to see it rebooted, minor changes like as in FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood or something, do the whole thing from new DB to DBZ Kai (or even new DBZ?) to DBS and then, what else but new DBGT!

I stand by what I said last time you touched on the topic; it really depends how it gets done. If it takes all the core elements of the original and only builds on them, I am pretty on board especially if it implements newer things that can give older things deeper context. I would not complain at some side stories for characters during the time of the Original Dragon Ball even. I am sure young Vegeta and Raditz side stories would not go down too badly provided it doesn't tarnish their character.
One of the main reasons I would have in favour of it also, would be to help newer fans develop bonds with characters who are not Goku and Vegeta. Having Tien, Yamcha and co being of bigger plot relevance does after all allow the demonstration that Earthlings do have skills / traits that Saiyan’s do not.
All in all though these are all subjective things which is a good reason to not reboot, after all get it wrong and you create a lot more problems than its worth.
Too many things are being rebooted and more often than not its horrible.
Haven’t watched the video yet, but I just think that too many “problematic” things in the original would have to be changed. It would also be dumbed down to super’s level. I just can’t handle that.
If dragon ball does have a reboot/remake I think that it would need a bit of tighter continuity and storytelling especially in regards to foreshadowing of future events such as setting up the android saga during the red ribbon army saga and giving android number eight a bigger role in that part of the story since his character was criminally underutilized for the later part of the story that are predicated on his existence

I think classic DB should have a Kai style retelling, with a similar redub that’s more accurate to the original, but not a full on reboot.
i think the original dragon ball should not be rebooted buy they could flesh out the human charters with spin off s such as origin stories tien , Krillin, or even a prequel about master roshi and crane school during reign of terror of king piccolo

Thing is, the original actors are really getting on in age. If new Dragon Ball content is ever to happen, they'll need to reboot it eventually. And if done right, it could be awesome, especially if they do something of a What If, exploring storythreads that didn't get enough love *cough* Raditz *cough*

And I would take the ideas from the final arc of GT as the final arc in my reboot, and have the Dragonballs actual existence be a threat to the universe. Have the Supreme Kai tell the nature of the Dragonballs disrupt the actual mature of the universe and if used too much too soon can have disasterous results on the fabric of reality. Thus they can't be used as a deus ex machina all the time, and have actual consequences to their actions. Something I did like about GT...

The Shadow Dragons were cool in concept if not execution. One difference I would do is have everyone split up to fight the dragons, instead of just Goku and Pan.
My thing is that the original Dragon Ball series will always exist, so why not reboot it?

A reboot is definitely needed to fix plot holes and inconsistencies. It can introduce movie only villains and make it better.

Aftering watching DBZA and some of Super, I decided I wanted to see if Dragon Ball since I wanted understand certain jokes like "Goku toppled an Army, defeated several Ancient demon, and sent a Rabbit to the Moon". So far I'm 69(heh) Episodes in and I'm loving it. How Goku has relationship with these characters, the story telling, while drawn out at some points, is pretty good, and of course just making jokes about what happens in this show and comparing how they would stack to later events in the Dragonball franchise.
I feel like a Reboot would strip some of the good nature and character of Dragon Ball. I would like to see an attempt but i don't feel like its necessary

I didn’t even want them to touch Bardock in the Broly movie so I id really hate it for them to redo my favorite part of the series
Dragon Ball is definitely fine as it is but I’m open to a GT Reboot, it has good material to work with at least if executed right.
I don’t think that’ll be a good idea on the account that the main story is focused on Super. Releasing a GT remake just doesn’t make sense at the current time since it may clash against what the Super storyline is doing at the moment.
They can have it set in an alternate timeline and update it while also giving it some of the power scaling from Super albeit toned down somewhat, it is possible and can be down without interfering with Super.
@@RogueFox2185 GT is practically an alternate timeline already. What I meant is it doesn’t make sense to develop a GT remake since Shueisha is heavily focused on Super right now and could confuse newer fans unaware of GT, thus it would clash with the current direction the company and story are going towards.
I’m pretty sure newer fans would at least heard of GT, SS4 is a testament to that even if they haven’t seen it. Also they should at least wait a good couple of years after Super is well and truly over, by then they could refine the plot to avoid the mistakes of the first series.

I feel like a kai thing with OG dragon ball can work. it had a lot of filler, and if they give it a "de-bloodifying" they can release uncut blu-rays with blood. they may even shorten it to under 100 episodes.
To be honest they should do another DBZ Kai with DBS Broly animation, it would still be the original shows but with better animation

I wouldn't mind a reboot with the reboot being similar but different at the same time. Full Metal Alchemist is a example of having a good reboot. But it can be risky can it can backfire on you. So it can be a hit and miss. I will welcome it as long as its done right

Yeah this (OG)DB fan would definitely be open to a reboot. It'd be awesome to watch a reimagining of something I loved growing up with and enjoying this with friends who haven't experienced the show like I did. The worst case scenario is that it sucks and I just end up rewatching the original anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I came across an actual dedicated fan who cut and reworked the old dragon ball HD anime episodes by calling it DRAGON BALL RECUT to match the manga and give it a kai feel along with matching the voices on both DUB and SUB and made it a total of 82 episodes to finish than 153!
My stance is like this. I'd be fine with a soft reboot. Keep it mostly the same without sanitizing most of it, but add some new stuff to streamline the lore. Very light "take it or leave it" retcons. Maybe new stories adding something to foreshadow events from Z and onward. Maybe use your idea to introduce Garlic Jr. into the canon and have Goku and Piccolo Jr. team-up to take him down. But it would take a lot of perfect things to happen that I don't think we could get going together. Might not be worth the effort.
IMO, as long as a reboot isn't a cash grab it can be a whole different story, for a whole different demographic, because why not? If I don't like the new stuff, I'll re-watch the old series. Certainly a lot better than having the original become something unrecognizable and bloated.

You can (not) reboot
There are a lot of pros and cons with this just like with every type of reboot. I try to give reboots a chance because they can be pretty cool and interesting. However, this is only possible if the reboot is given the right tools to work with and as seen today most reboots are not given the right tools to prosper as well as the original. With Dragon Ball though it really doesn’t need to be rebooted in my opinion, but instead expanded just from Goku and his friends.
What I mean by this is that the Dragon Ball universe is massive and can tell many stories from many different angles. Stories that can show us something new and compelling that we never seen before from Dragon Ball. I would be down to see a story about Hit and his assassin work, the U6 saiyans and their work as defenders, the story of Yamoshi and the ancient saiyans, a story of the Pride Troopers, a new story that takes place in one of the four universes that didn’t participate in the ToP, or even a story about a an angel in training not wanting to become an angel attendant and are trying to figure out what their true purpose in life is.
It’s like what Peter and Miles said in Spider-Verse movie and that all they need to do is take leap of faith.
The only way that i will allow Dragon ball to be rebooted is if they get Ufotable to do the animation Dragon ball really deserves the Unlimited budget works treatment if not then they should not reboot it at all.

I'm a generally new DBZ fan. I got in on it after FighterZ was announced and I wanted to learn more about the show before truly diving in, starting with the original anime, then Z Kai (yes, even the Final Chapters,) then the Super movies and, finally, the show. And now I'm currently working on the original manga as well as keeping up with the Super manga. All this to say, while I can't speak to whether a reboot would be good or bad for the series or good or bad right off the bat, I certainly didn't need one... *looks at Kai* Mostly.
been a while since I watched a MasakoX video.... and hearing his voice now.... makes me need to get over no more new episodes of TFS DBZA again :D
I think the smart thing would be to let the manga finish either the current arc or at least finish one more arc and then start to bring the manga to a new series. Way less of a chance the anime would catch up with the manga, which has happened more times than it should have with Dragon Ball. Let the game companies pop out a game or 2 in between.
Out of curiousity, what happened with the Final Chapters of Kai? I only watched Kai up to the end of the Cell saga. I haven't watched the Final Chapters as I rewatched it from Z when Kai went on a break after Cell so I didn't feel the need to watch Final Chapters
They got released. In the wake of Super getting dubbed Funi started releasing The Final Chapters. Often long before it would air on Toonami. I think they aired Final Chapters and Super in a kind of double feature scenario. But yeah Final Chapters did see a release to complete the Kai set of Blu-Rays/DVDs.

There are dozens of old anime I feel should be remastered considering the upgrade in quality since the 90's (YYH, Slayers, Kenshin, and even the original DB in that), but otherwise I feel they should leave them alone.
Just give us ANOTHER recap story of early Dragon Ball. The last one was Path to Power, right? If it does good they could just make sequels to it. It's not like all the OG Dragon Ball movies weren't also retellings as well. We don't need a new series.

Every reboot these days is ruined by pandering to a market that doesn't exist rather than to the market that made it popular and profitable in the first place.
I feel like the only way a remake would work, was if it was in a format similar to Dragon Ball Heroes. A miniseries taking the more significant or classic moments/arcs from the show. On another note, as I think you've talked, as in demonic or evil ki, that could be one way to keep King Piccolo a demon or evil incarnate, while still acknowledging his alien heritage. Maybe they could touch more on the concept of the nameless Namekian perhaps?
But still, I agree with the sentiment that Dragon Ball shouldn't be rebooted

I think the overall idea of a reboot is pretty bad. But, there are smaller ideas that I think would be nice. For example, I’d love to see a sort of mini what-if series for the show where Goku and Vegeta aren’t the main focus anymore. Maybe show off the other characters more. Like Gohan or Goten and Trunks. And definitely rewrite the place of female characters. (Specifically Chi-Chi and Videl) Just give the side characters the spotlight they deserve.

A Dragon Ball reboot could work if it represented the flow and the manga as a whole, with some changes, of course, and possibly a change to Super to make it work better with the two previous series as a whole.

It has it's own humour that won't do today because people became eh, political on one wing.
If they do then we can see better artwork so there’s that. However, that being said they can change stories depending on what they want and change the nostalgia of fans that have been watching since they were younger. They could streamline a bunch of stuff too. Maybe less filler....ugh I see what you mean, it’s complicated!

Fun fact. The original "Dragon Ball" series has already been remastered and released in Blu-Ray... In Spain.
Yeah, Selecta Visión, the biggest anime publisher in the country, managed to do so last year, and apparently they've been the first country, beating even Japan itself to it (it was even a marketing point). I don't know if it's been done in other countries though. And the Spanish edition has a lot of language options... Except those are (European) Spanish, Japanese and all the regional languages that the series was dubbed to back in the early 90s: Catalan, Basque, Galician and Valencian. So no English option.
But if it has been done already, surely it can be released in English speaking countries too. The question is if it's financially viable.
You see, the reason why Spain got a Dragon Ball Blu Ray edition is that the franchise was a huge hit there from day 1. But in English speaking countries that didn't happen until DBZ, years later. So maybe Toei thinks that English speaking countries have no interest in this part of the series.
I’d like to see a new show set somewhere with no goku or végéta and completely new characters. Maybe alternate universe or years into the future
If it was rebooted it would be a disaster the only reboot that really worked was full metal alchemist brotherhood fantastic anime but for dragon ball I don't think it will work at all it'll be one giant mess worse that GT I guarantee

Hollywood reboots are a whole other animal in some regards. A lot of reboot movies and even movies allegedly made from novels are treated as "we bought you some names, now go write a generic love story".
If they reboot DB, it would be obvious that all the riske scenes with Bulma and then Master Roshi will definitely be removed since that kind of stuff would cause world alarm in these days.
All I want is a faithful remake, my favourite fights are in Dragon Ball.

I’d be worried about censorship, because times have changed and they are not going to allow a lot of things from the original series (specifically moments with Bulma or even launch in “The Turtle School Uniform”) but I think a re-dub could do the show some good.
Rebooting is a sign that creativity is down the tubes. Don’t try it with a classic.

Personally I think a new dragonball story far into the future with all the lore everything we have would be a better choice with new characters like dragonball setting in Age 10,000
Yes I agree a new series set in the distant future with the Earthlings knowing ki and the Namekians being on Earth and the Majin race being introduced would be great!

what about instead of a usual reboot they do a sorta steel ball run alternate universe kinda thing with dragonball
They're just some shows and movies that just don't need to be rebooted. However I would be interested in rebooting just enough to make the human characters more relevant. Such as krillen tien and yamaha. Make them more competitive.
They could do a spin-off on the Pride Troopers. Give us more of that lovey lore on Universe 11.

Man I just want an HD remaster. Other places have gotten bluray releases of OG DB, just not the US. Hell, do the same for GT while you're at it.
