+Tru metalhead on Maui ey John Facenda never narrated any of the GOTW episodes. Before Harry Kalas was chosen to narrate the GOTW in 1975, NFL Films used well-known sportscasters, like Ray Scott, Al Meltzer, Pat Sumerall, and Jack Whitaker to narrate those presentations. Facenda's successor as the #1 narrator at NFL Films was actually Jeff Kaye, though Brad Crandall and John Doremus filled the gap from 1984-'87 before Kaye took over in 1988. Facenda and Kalas took turns narrating the season-ending highlight film for a while before Kalas was chosen to narrate the year-end highlight film annually, beginning with "NFL '79" because Facenda narrated the early editions of "Road to the Super Bowl".
The Redskins were the top team in 1983 until the fourth quarter of the NFC title game. They led 21-0 against the 49ers and nearly lost the game to the 49ers. They clearly didn't show up against the Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII as they were blown to pieces, 38-9, in the most lopsided SB at the time. Imagine if the 49ers had won the NFC title game and faced the Raiders in SBXVIII. Would Marcus Allen had been as successful as he was against the 'Skins? Would Joe Montana have led the 49ers to their 2nd World title in 3 years? It's a nice "What-If?" scenario. I'm a huge Redskins fan but even I know that we were totally overmatched for the last 75 minutes that we played in 1983.
If Sabol isnt in the HOF,he should be! Even though all the shots were game footage, ofcourse,he was still responsible for bringing us tons of movies or docs to enjoy. Dedicated to the sport as much as anyone else in the league
@@thromonesmith1059Both men narrating team highlights only John Facende was great at narrating Super bowl highlights until he died in 1984 The great Harry kalas said john facenda was mentor to him
Billy " white shoes" Johnson should be in the HOF! He was such a clutch player! Check out the TD vs the 49ers on the last play, he slipped and gets up on a tipped ball right in his hands and the extra effort wins the game for the Falcons! He made BIG PLAYS for 10 years!
This would be the last scene for the Colts in Baltimore because a year later they moved to Indy. Baltimore didn’t have a team and waited 12 years until the Ravens came
The 49er getting leveled at 8:10 is Renaldo Nehemiah (83), a track star who added speed to Bill Walsh’s offense. Fortunately, he was OK after the vicious hit by Falcons’ CB Kenny Johnson (37). Nehemiah played the following week in the loss at Chicago.
I remember the 49ers/Falcon game in Atlanta that year. Was still a grudge match, at that point. Falcons had been posited as, "the team of the 80s," by a big sports magazine. Er...only it was San Francisco that became one of the 80s' greatest teams. White Shoes spun around and got that Hail Mary and won the game-a very physical game, at that. The 49ers got over to the play at the end zone faster than hell, I'll tell you that! They said White Shoes' knee was down at the one yd line. Falcons had a knack for those last minute plays and they'd beat the 49ers the same way again, in the same stadium in 1990, only in '90, it was Billy Joe Tolliver that threw the bomb. Bartkowski wound up with Washington, then the Rams before retiring. And the Saints weren't "the ain'ts", at this point, becoming monstrous on defense that decade.
That Billy White Shoes Johnson TD would have taken 10 minutes to confirm with all the replays, I'm guessing it actually would have been overturned and ruled down before getting in, either way great effort from him, and the 49ers to stop him.
what the hell happened at 7:15? Cliff Stoudt collapsed like a house of cards... did Franco (his own teammate no less) even touch him before he went down?!
Raiders played them earlier in the season and found a way to beat them. Very rarely do two teams meet in the early part of the season and win the second time. The way that Skins team was built is that if you jumped on them early, they couldn’t come back. They were a ground and pound offense that used the run to set up the pass. This game was more of a revenge game for the Raiders. They definitely got it.
Cowboys and Dolphins were tied for "The Team" for the first half the season. Redskins stepped it up for the 2nd half and the Raiders finished out the post seasons with Dominance over the highest scoring team in NFL History.
I, ve always liked the way the late Harry Kalas narrates all of the game films, when they chose him to succeed John Facenda, they got it right.

That music to start WAS NFL music in the 80s, you knew it was ON when you heard that tune, chills.

NFL films genius camera work. that clip of cowboys danny white and the disappointed women in the stands. brilliant
The diesel was dominating back then and Dickerson was about to rule the league

I will take the 80's NFL any any season all season long
The first round quarterback class that year made a combined 11 Super Bowl appearances, with one quarterback won (John Elway)
There were only two 4,000-yard passers in '83. They were Lynn Dickey and Bill Kenney. Danny White came close but finished with 3,980.
I challenge someone to make a video like this using classic nfl soundtracks to this year's season.
Love the opening song.Love the Bum Phillips speech at 14 min mark
i love that tune too
2:40 The TD by White Shoes would have garnered a 10-minute replay review had it been around in 1983. And it very well might have been overturned.

Walsh was hoping Nehemiah would be his Jerry Rice before 1985
Seeing Tom Flores being carried by his players was just awesome. Just win baby!
Those were the days.

My favorite season of all the ones I watched
every team had cool uniforms this year. Even the Bucs had cool uniforms.
Then the bucs introduced the perfect uniforms in 1997 and again in 2020.

80s and 90s the last of the old grid iron.

Redskins was the team all year until they all got the flu the day before the Superbowl.
Matt LaClear Raiders were an excellent team though, and almost beat the Redskins in RFK Stadium in the regular season.
***** Agreed. Both teams were awesome. Mayube top five Superbowls as far as talent goes.
+gluserty Without Mike Haynes & Marcus Allen.
