    Mr. Christian is a bloody poet... These videos are little treasures. All I can say is "Thanks, Cap!" and "I'm buying your book cuz I know it's going to be brilliant."

    Masterful storytelling. No surprise given Christian's amazing career in journalism. Love the Django analogy.

    Beautiful choice of illustrative music. Coincidently just as I received the notification of your video I was listening to John Jorgenson playing "Billet Doux" the Django classic

    Loving the book, and what a pleasant surprise to see this video pop up as well. Thanks Christian. With age, windsurfing days are long gone. Have a classic plastic as well, and enjoying sailing, tinkering, and hopes of much more. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Self-steering seems like a smart way to go when single handing a boat. Plus, it doesn't yell commands at you while underway. Having a warning alarm and maybe redundancy on the auto-pilot should make sleeping a possibility as opposed to finding your self unable to fall asleep while underway out of fear of collision as sea.

    To change the topic, you seem like you may be old school enough to know how to do celestial navigation. If so , an episode devoted to the subject could be interesting. Thanks.

    Hi, I have recently read your book. You have a great sense of humour, quite unusual for an American (apologies to all others), more like a pommie. You've added to my motivation to go single handed around the Pacific Islands at age 69.

    That's it now I too am an instant fan of Django Reinhardt. Really weird as I go through my play list I have more and more trouble finding artists that are still living! Where are the contemporary incarnations of this kind of beauty. BTW great mix of sailing water and sunset, video put me in a mello mood. Thanks.

    Looks as if you stressed the boom a bit on your jibe. I like to sail with a tight main sheet, and then I use the traveler to adjust the main. I'll let out the main sheet only when I am well off the wind, and I'll tighten the vang. Using the traveler with a tight main sheet keeps the boom in check on jibes.

    Smooth...It seems you've made significant progress on the wiring since your last video. That process would interest me much. The boat is looking more lovely with each progressive video. I don't want to put pressure on you, but I suffer greatly between your uploads in anticipation of the next. Editing each one must be a lot of work. I must remain patient. All that said it just seems logical that you head back to Hawaii this coming summer. August perhaps would be a good month. ;) This time we could all visit Maui or the Big Island. Perhaps you won't feel the need to do it yourself, but could take one of your family members who might well like the sea as much as you. A grandson perhaps...Thank you for your efforts.

    Great music, great colors and hues from the water and sky. But as a beginning sailor with still a lot to learn and practice ,I ask how is this self steering and self navigating really sailing? One of fascinating things that I see in sailing is that there is so much to do while sailing the boat - setting the course, trimming the sails properly for the wind conditions and tack you are on and to reach your destination efficiently, or leisurely as you wish, deciding when to tack or when to jibe, whether to sail down wind or up, whether to be in a close haul, close reach, broad reach or to head down wind. Doesn't electronic self steering and self navigating take a lot of fun out of the sailing?

    • @ChristianWilliamsYachting
      @ChristianWilliamsYachting  7 років тому +1

      On bigger cruising boats, steering is a chore and a bore. Attention better spent on sail trim, navigation and systems monitoring. Think of it as a locomotive on tracks, not a dirt bike. Auto steering also does a better job than humans, whose attention wanders (because it really is boring to steer). None of this true for dinghies or racing, where skill and high attention are rewarded. Take the fun out? Maybe, a little. You can always take over the helm when teh need arises.

      Was I wrong on starting to learn on small boats? I'm in my 70s and just started to learn sailing last year. My first sailing instruction was on a Sunfish then moved up to a 19' Flying Scot and have now sailed on 26 foot and 38 foot keel boats. The 38 footer had a wheel instead of a tiller and also had auto pilot but when I sailed this wasn't engaged. My comparison between the smaller boats and the larger boat experiences was like the difference between driving a sports car and a truck.

    • @ChristianWilliamsYachting
      @ChristianWilliamsYachting  7 років тому +1

      A flying Scot in 20 knots will teach more about sailing in a day than a year on a cruising boat. You're doing it right.

    • @JosephHight
      @JosephHight 7 років тому +1

      Thanks. That makes me feel better coming from one who loves sailing as obviously as you do. Love your videos and intend to buy your book about sailing solo to Hawaii and back. Just vacillating between format - the book or the kindle version.

    • @ChristianWilliamsYachting
      @ChristianWilliamsYachting  7 років тому

      "Line 7" from New Zealand, heavy duty absolutely leak-proof stuff no longer manufactured. White is a silly color for foul weather gear, since in a storm the ocean is white. Everybody else complained that the fabric didn't breathe. Now supplanted by modern tech, but I loved it .
